Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Hmmmm:thinking: Doesn't seem to be much in it (to my knackered eyes that is)Slightly better Bokeh with the 25mm. Think the 12-40 has the edge though

It's much closer than I thought it would be - next test will be low light and focusing speed. If there's nothing in it then the o25 might be off to the classifieds

Although I have a few lenses the 12-40 f2.8 stays on my camera the most. It to me is a lovely lens.........superb build and image quality. I'm loathe to get rid of the lenses that i've acquired though as if I sell any off, I'll bet a pound to a penny there will be a situation that I'll need the one I've just sold. So I suppose I just collect lenses:)

Lovely shots there Alf..............any filters used?

I used a 2 stop soft edge ND grad for both of these
I used a 2 stop ND filter for the first to get the shutter speed I wanted which was 0.4 sec.

Hi, Ive been pretty impressed with some of the images these cameras are producing and am considering a change. I've read a few reviews and there seems to be little to choose from between the E-M5 mk1 and the E-M10 apart from the weatherproofing. I wondered if you gents could point me in the right direction - Im looking to use it mainly for travel, a little bit of landscape and some casual people/portraits. budget is likely to be limited to a reasonable amount so if you could let me know what lenses are good bang for your buck id be really appreciative
Thanks

i had the e-m10 and it was great, very compact. Some don't like the e-m5 as the buttons are a bit rubbery but I don't have any experience of it.

For portraits, the 45mm f1.8 is great - I think they're in the the region of £120 with cashback now ? For landscapes, the 14-42 EZ is perfect good, if you want a prime then the panasonic 20mm f1.7 is small, quick and light. The P20 is about £140 used, the 14-42 doesn't come up very often

A similar question was asked on another forum I'm on, may prove useful to you?

In terms of lenses, 45mm is a no-brainer with the Olympus promotion, maybe the Panasonic 14mm lens (2nd hand for around 90-100) for a wider fov?

I'm surprised by the lack of difference even in bokeh.

I've looked at the images hard, and I can't see a noticeable difference. The 12-40 renders slightly lighter in colour on some of the green sections of the label. I'm not sure that's "better". In terms of pure sharpness and contrast, I find them identical in performance. In fact, I'd welcome some more tests frankly. That's a big eye opener for me.

i was amazed - i knew that the 12-40 was sharp but everyone says that the primes are sharper but this doesn't follow these thoughts. I'll do some more tests ( i did one of the bottle laying down so i need to sort that out, it appears to show that the 12-40 is sharper )

anyway, another from the 12-40 today

There is clearly much more background blur with the prime but the quality of it looks a little odd - a bit out of shape and maybe a touch oniony.

Still, for sharpness there isn't really anything between them and the zoom looks a little warmer but that could easily be due to variations in lighting or w/b.

edit: if I get really bored I might try a test between the zoom and the PL25.

Admittedly, I was bored :) the shots were taken seconds apart ( literally the time it took to change the lenses ).

Hadn't noticed any odd shaping or oniony stuff but I don't have an eye for that stuff

Looking forward to seeing the results of your boredom Ned (y)

The main thing that is evident out of your two sets of comparison shots is the subject (bottle) seems closer on the zoom pictures thus throwing the background out more.

I guess that's due to the size of each lens ? I did think about that and I should've taken it into account probably

Plus the primes sometimes aren't quite the FL they claim to be - I've heard some are slightly off but rounded to nearest whole number.

I noticed that. I appreciate you doing these tests. Can you do some of a brick wall with both at the same distance of the front element to the wall? I.e. move the body/tripod back a touch with the 12-40 to account for longer lens. The problem with the tests above (especially the second) is that they are too reliant on focus accuracy. Tiny variations in focus could affect the shot so much. To eliminate this it would be best to do it outdoors on a tripod.

Im not moaning about the test...i appreciate it. Id just be really interested to see the difcerence. Would you mind doing some at other focal lenghts vs primes? Particularly interested in the panasonic 20mm and oly 17mm. Cheers damian.

Will give it a go when I have a moment. I only have the o25 left as I've sold everything else but I suspect that the p20 was sharper

I lurve the resurrection of the OM era on/off switch!
Note the position of Fn1 on the thumb grip.
If you look closely you can see it's got a 20Mp sensor.

Not the prettiest camera I've ever seen...

That's presumably a photoshopped mockup from a rumour site is it? How can you tell it's got a 20Mp sensor?
The two dials on the right of the top plate look like they've both got shutter buttons in them which would be wierd!

Now a EM5 owner I need a new SD card

Will this one work

If not anyone have any suggestions?

Ta

You should have said you needed one - you could have had the one I took out of it!

Not to sure if it will have new 20MP sensor could be wrong, but with fairly new EM-5mkII with only the older 16mp sensor might pee of a few user who just brought into one of theses

Yes, but the first EM10 scuppered the EM5.

That said, I'd have expected Oly to save the 20mp for the EM1 mk2.
