Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Lovely scene, I reckon a landscape shot that caught the boat and the cloud 'slash' across the sky would have worked beautifully
 
Morning, (that's bound to be right at least 50% of the time)
I have a thread on the beginners forum about a second camera needed, I shall also possibly put this in the Fuji thread as well if I'm allowed... I don't know if the Fuji bunch are allowed to speak to the Olympus bunch.
Just a quick one as I think I can bore people with my waffle.
The short version is I'm looking for a second camera, Quality, portability and presentation are the key features.
I do not want massive lenses, just maybe 3 around the 18mm, 23mm and 35mm range or thereabouts.
The two cameras I am considering are the Fuji X-T1 and the Olympus E-M5 MkII.
The Fuji is sexy, as well as being a quality camera but the E-M5 MkII is also a good camera.

I have not laid hands on either as I have no decent stockist nearby.
I just wondered if any of you E-M5 MkII. owners have any advice that could sway me either way.

Thank you for any help or advice you are willing to offer.

Gary Nice shot,is the reason you could handhold at 1/5th of a second because of the lighter setup or something else?
 
I was amazed that I could do 0.8s on that one with the light twirling a page or so back, I'm hopeless at holding the camera still usually
 
I know the Em10 only has 3 part IS compared to EM1 but would that still be capable of better low SS's compared to.a lot of DLSR's?
 
Can any one recommend product and place re spare batteries for EM10 please and also is a hood recommended for the 45mm lens,if so any pointers.? Some of the shots you guys are getting with these cam/lens's are very inspiring

I found mine perfectly good handheld, yes

For batteries, ex-pro from Amazon at about £10 or £12 for 2 are great. You can also get a jjc hood from there

Damian,on your flikr page your closeup shots of the insects are lovely,you used the 75-300,i was considering the 60mm macro but it seems that one can get really good closeups with the longer lens also,what are your thoughts on this and anyone else,thanks

I used the 70-300vr with my d7000 and a raynox DCR-250 for those. I have the 60mm macro and I don't find it as easy to use so it might be going up for sale soon unless I can master manual focus with it.

Maybe I found the Nikon set up easier as I had had more practice...

On the info on flikr its saying EM1 75-300?
 
Ah, sorry - I thought you meant the macro stuff.

There's a lot of detail to be had with the Omd range, even from large crops
 
When changing focal length lenses one has to change the setting on the IBS to equal the FL of the lens,what if you use a zoom,what do you set it too then?
 
I don't bother - everything just works. Bought a 7.5mm fisheye and the camera recognised it ok even though it's manual
 
I have handheld my E-M5 mk1 at 1/5 sec one handed using the 14-42EZ.

Sorry Nigel but I only have the original E-M5 which is light, and of course has the IBIS which is terrific! I am very happy with it, alongside my E-M1. Hope someone can speak up for the MK II, but from what I've read it seems very good indeed!
 
Here's a few test shots (so nothing special about the subject/composition I'm afraid) with the newly acquired Panny 100-300mm on my EM5-II. Still trying to decide whether IQ is good enough for my needs or not.

It produces 'nice' images when everything is perfect, i.e. good light and pretty static subjects, but AF-C isn't great to say the least and IQ rapidly drops off when light falls. If there's enough light to keep ISO below 800 at f8 & 1/1000 then all's good, and it's 'not bad' up to 1600.

Thanks. There's nothing 'wrong' with them, but they're not stellar either IMO (discounting composition etc and purely talking IQ). Of course, it's a bit unfair me expecting stellar performance from a lens like this at this price, but these were in good light. In anything other than good light IQ rapidly drops, more so than what I'm used to.

Yes, had both and compared side by side and the Panny was noticeably sharper at the long end. This was the main factor, but also having the extra 1/2 stop light makes far more of a difference than I'd ever thought. I find with m4/3 ISO is critical and at high shutter speeds and small ish aperture ISO ramps up very quickly.
 
I'm shooting a wedding in the not too distant future so will need a flash and will buy the Nissin.

I have a Nikon flash too, and that's sat in my drawer with the rest of my FF kit. Not used it since the last wedding I shot.

All it boils down to is if your type of shooting needs a flash then get one, if it doesn't then don't. Simples.
 
The Nissin Di466 is pretty good and half the price of the i40 so good for occasional use mine gets constant use for macro.
 
It's a shame that the models with swivel and bounce are so large. A compact flash that can swivel and bounce would be a big seller I think.

The FL-LM3 that's bundled with the EM5-II swivels and tilts and is very compact, but it's not very strong. Great for something portable but don't expect it to light up a convert hall ;)

Only works on the EM5 mk2 though...
