Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Ok, the EM1 and 12-40 is £1499 and the EM52 and 12-40 is also £1499 in the UK.

I can obviously get (as I did previously) a grey EM1/12-40 for a lot less (£1089), but there doesn't seem to be much off the EM52 at the moment (DR) or it is not available on the website (HDEW).

I see a couple of you have gone for the EM1 recently, is this simply due to them being cheaper or are they still the superior camera to the new EM52?

Been away from M43 for a while so would be starting from scratch again :) currently have a RX100M3 and nowt else.

Let me be pedantic : both the LCD screen and the EVF viewfinder are Live View in this system.

If Nawty's EVF shows a 15 degree tilt the actual LCD unit inside the viewfinder is 15 degrees all to buggery : physical fault : needs repair.

I went on an Olympus streetwalk where I tried both the 5mk2 and EM1 and after that I knew the EM1 was the camera for me - it just fitted much better in the hand, had better erganomics and the autofocus is better (although the 5mk2 is super-duper quick at S-AF). It also didn't help that I found the add on grip for the 5mk2 to not be very comfy - it was just the wrong size for my hand. That made my mind up for me but YMMV.

Also, Olympus clearly see that the EM1 is still the top of their tree and are planning more firmware updates for it - they obviously think they are differentiated enough for 'serious' shooters to still go for the M1 and will only launch the EM1mk2 when they have sweated the current one for all its worth, I think there is still a bit more to offer from it.

If I had the choice I would still go for the E-M1 now.
Better all-round capability, especially after v3.0 fw.

I would go for the E-M5MkII unless I had an especially awkward right hand which suited only the E-M1.
The sensor is ... debateably lower noise at higher ISO,
and the E-M5MkII has its party trick which people are still finding new uses for.
Also doesn't the E-M5MkII have more up to date wireless capabilities?

For C-AF focus the Lumix GH4 is the best for the job at the moment despite the E-M1's on-sensor PD-AF.

But what does it do? Where do I find it? I've not seen any reference to Live View anywhere.
There is no need for Olympus or Panasonic to mention it, that's all there is.
I think the term was coined to enable DSLR users to get their head around a mirror-up LCD view from the sensor compared to the view through the OVF.

Now we have ... view ;)

So nothing like Live Bulb or Live Composite? But still doesn't make a lot of sense. This is worse than Voldamor..... He who shall not be named. A conspiracy of silence.

No, it's simply using the back screen to compose and take the shot. A cool feature is that you can just touch the screen where you want it to focus and it focuses and takes the shot with one light touch.

Darn. I thought I was going to learn something new.

Have you tried linking up the warp core with the phase transducers?

The party trick is exactly that :)
...that is until it's possible to capture all eight images in say 1/60s or faster, even then it will still be less than ideal on all but the stillest of days.
For Indoor/studio product photography it's fine though.

Have you shot the E-M1 with the latest firmware?;)

The Olympus cameras have Live Bulb.

When I first got my e-m1 I thought I'd made the wrong decision - too big and cumbersome coming from the e-m10. Then, after a little shooting it dropped into place - better weighted, better balanced, better access to the menus. Basically all the things that people said improve cameras like the d7000 over the d3100 when I upgraded.

Going drag racing on Saturday. Maybe it'll be in the bin Saturday night :D

Exactly the same for me - at first I really wasn't sure, now if I pick up the M10 it just feels wrong, I'd probably sell mine, but I got it for £400 and some so and so came along and gave theirs away for £200... grrr... still my daughter will be happy one she knows she'll probably get it :)

BTW they really should have done the firmware 3 ages ago - they may have beaten of a fair few DSLRs and pretty all the mirrorless market if they'd got it right at the start.

@Nawty I don't suppose they let slip what those new updates might be?

Would people recommend the OM-D EM10 over the original OM-D EM5? I think I just about prefer the look of the EM5 but it doesnt look like theres much in it. I am interested in focus peaking though with some older lenses, I know theres a trick to do it with the EM5 but is there a proper feature for it?

I used the e-m10 with some old lenses and the focus peaking was VERY handy. The 'art' mode trick with the mk1 5 would do my nut in. I also felt that the 10 was a step up in build quality. The dials and buttons just felt more refined. Ultimately though i found the system a little too small, even with the grip so maybe consider that if you're looking at the 5 & 10.

Nah, only that they were planning more this year - I'm not expecting wonders but there will probably be a few nice to haves.

For me they made the EM10 too good, it immediately rendered the EM5 more or less invalid unless you wanted the weather sealing. The extra features of the EM10 more than make up for it IMO and focus peaking is a fantastic feature - I'd not tried it before but it is really handy.

The 5 has 5 axis IBIS (which is amazing) and weather sealing which the 10 doesn't. I've had a wifi enabled camera and I've never used the function at all, I'm not sure if anyone else has? The focus peaking work around is a bit odd for a start but it does work.

The wifi is brilliant with an ipad.

An EM10 and ipad mini makes a perfect travelling set up - no cables or anything needed and fits in a tiny bag.

It is also great for live composite/bulb.

Does it transfer RAW as well as JPEG?

Just the JPG, which for me is perfect given the limited storage on an ipad. I shoot raw+JPG, transfer the jpgs to ipad to have a look through and put on facebook/wherever and then have the raws to play with when I get home.

Thanks for the input guys, the prices are pretty similar now for used EM5 and a new EM10 (taking into account a lens too). Kinda swaying towards the EM10 more though but shall read some more reviews :)
Weather sealing isnt a deal breaker, WiFi definitely isnt either. More about the image quality and handling. I think the EM5 menu system is horrific though haha.

Image quality is identical, as is the menu system...

My old e-m10 sold for £200 recently in the classifieds.

Which was silly cheap.

I think (still properly untested) that the "3-axis" IBIS in E-M10 & e-pL7 is of comparable effectiveness to the "5-axis" IBIS in the E-M5 & E-M1,
it is certainly of the same basic type
and superior to the older Pen (&GX7) "2-axis" IBIS.

Oh, the other thing is that the EM10 has a built in flash which is probably the best 'photographic' reason its better than the EM5.

As Ulfric says, the 5-way stabilisation isn't that much better unless you shoot macro.

Which was silly cheap.

Too cheap - but someone got a brilliant deal.

I didn't really notice much of a difference between the M1 & M10 IBIS, but then I don't shoot at low shutter speed that often.

Picked up a 40-150 f2.8 plus the t/c a the recent photo show had the chance to try it at the UK wolf sanctuary this week.
Im very impressed, to be honest while it managed shooting through the fences well the increased depth of field meant that if the wolves where close to the fence traces of the fence where visible in the shot.
Its a lovely lens to use.
