I thought the same until I tried a different raw processing software

Have tried capture one it just the same apart from being over saturated sometime.

Lightroom has very light sharpening as default. Turn it up - it isn't a crime you know ;)

I am loving lightroom at the moment think i am going to move over from Aperture if Apple dont get a new version out PRONTO

I'd expect no sharpening to be just that across any raw converter.

I've just had a play viewing raw images in Lightroom from E-P3, G5 and OM-D. I think the images look better in develop view and they seem to take a little while to 'load', Lightroom loads them but takes a while to complete it's rendering. Looking better ;-)

All the raw converters I've tried apply some default sharpening.

You have to do something to the image by default when you convert numbers into images...

arad85 have you ever used aperture by any chance?

Good god no. I'd have to own a Mac for that to happen.... ;)

Ha ha doh

Well, I finally had a chance to get outside and take some proper photographs with my new OMD. To say I'm delighted with it is an understatement, this thing rocks! And the 40-150 lens is a little cracker, easily as good as some of my big heavy (not to mention expensive) pro lenses. The OMD didn't miss a single shot and it was a joy to use.

I have a separate animal photography section to my website and today's outing to Arundel Wildflower Centre can be seen here: http://lindsaydobsonphotography.com/pets/animal-photographer-west-sussex/

I am SO pleased I bought this camera, I love it! I even took some images at 5000 ISO and they were remarkably clean.

OMG Those images are CRACKING. How much processing did they get via Lightroom also did you shoot raw or jpeg? Am so amaze with those images

Just read the website and you shoot jpeg and wow. How have you got your camera set up NR and Sharpness and other setting wise please

Thanks Andrew. JPEGs only today, I'll do RAW tests in a week or two. No much processing, just my usual standard Lightroom preset which adds a slight curve for a bit of punch and takes off any default sharpening, I prefer a smoother softer look to things.

The autofocus was so accurate I had no issues at all - unlike the Fuji XE1 which is pretty useless on anything which isn't static!

I'll need to get to know the OMD in order to get the best from it, but I'll definitely be using it on pro assignments from now on.

I have found AF a bit slow at the moment with my little one so not sure if I have setting wrong somewhere or it the camera might be a bit duff?

Are you able to send me the preset you have for lightroom as like to see how it works as I am in between whether to move to lightroom or stick with aperture..

But those images have blown me away

Hi Andrew - The preset I use is aimed at standardisation since the same shoot can involve my working between three different camera manufacturers on the same day. It also takes into account the very neutral in camera JPEG settings that I use. So it might not work with your own shots if you have different in-camera settings. But this is how it is for JPEGs (Lightroom 4.2):

Exposure -0.3
Contrast 12
Highlights -4
Shadows +6
Whites +9
Blacks -4
Clarity -8
Vibrance +40
Contrast: Medium
Saturation - reduce purple and magenta to taste
Luminance - green minus 11
Sharpening Zero
(Then adjust black point and highlights to taste if necessary)

Edit: I held some of today's OMD shots back because I had the XE1 with me and these are going to form the basis of a comparison blog post which I'll put together over the next couple of weeks. But I was quite easily able to tweak the in camera settings on the OMD to very closely match the output and colour of the Fuji, so much so that my assistant couldn't tell which image had come from which camera.

Nice shots Lindsay. Arundel WWT is a great place, used to be members, but not been this year.

This is an experimental shot, taken with the 7-14mm and not cropped.

Two different mono HDR processed images merged together, each from the same 7 exposures.

Landsay can you tell me how you got your OMD set up regarding the colour setting sharpness NR etc for Jpeg as I just cant believe how cracking those images are I keep going back and looking at them :)

For JPEGs it's set to 'Muted' with sharpening turned down a notch. NR is set to either Low or Off depending on the environment. I suspect many people will find these settings too dull, but for me this is how I like my starting point to be.

Thanks Alan, I'll get better results once I've finessed my workflow for this camera, there may still be further adjustments. It's a lovely machine and worth the price tag in my opinion.

Finally saw an OMD in Jessops today. OMG - they are teeny tiny! Loved it.

I love my OM-D too - not really liked a camera this much since the GF1

And I am starting to love mine even more after a rocky start but it such a awesome camera.

Just been trying to do some Star Trails alllll Failed how do we focus since we cant see anything in EVF or Screen since it too dark... Doesnt even pick up the starts either Ive done a shutter of 40 Sec no good not long enough how long should do it for

Lovely images Lindsay no comparison but heres some of my faviourites from a visit to Blackpool Zoo today just took the panny 45-200 and the sony rx100 in case I needed something shorter. Shot in raw and edited with PSE10.

Some were not great due to the distance of the animals, bars and glass although the tilting screen came in handy for the orangutan just held the camera up tn the air and tilted the screen down.

Some super shots here folks showing just how great the oly is and the the users too, of course ;)

Think i need to get my arse to a Zoo :) and give the AF a big test. Are you guys using CAF or SAF when shooting animals?

It was a case of using saf but using continuous shooting , did try moving monkeys but it was a no no think it was more my technique then the camera.

Thunderbird those shots are great! Wish I'd been there.

Agreed

SAF will be more accurate initially but during a high speed burst (9fps) you loose any focusing after it 1st locks on.

Last post on here may be useful with regards to moving objects I havent tested it so thats why I said may.

Added to reading list - thanks

Any idea how or what minimise AF field is

In the AF setting for the saf and caf what mode people using for sports or fast moving objects such as kids.

I've been trying to follow the above link instruction but minimise AF field not sure what that is or what settings
