Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Sound like it has bitten you the way it bit me  I had been Canon for many decades. Not one regret moving it on and the om-d give me that feeling I got when the Canon A1 was first put into my hand. :D

I think you're right - I'm fascinated by it already, I'm going round the house photographing the most mundane everday objects. And that 40-150 lens is stonkingly sharp.

That's it exactly - the OMD makes me WANT to take pictures, whereas my FF cameras make me tired and irritable!

Correct that how I feel.. When I had the 7D with it lens in the back pack I just couldnt be bothered to take it out.

OMD with 3 lovely lens in a lovely small crumpler back is a gem Ive taken it out more this week than I took the 7D out in 6 month

Ive also found it more fun to take pictures with the OMD too I am finding it much more enjoyable

Hi Lindsay,

Thanks for replying! :)

I'll admit to having a slightly nostalgic view of the OM-D having been a major OM fan at the start of my photographic journey (many years ago). Of all the mirrorless offerings, the OM-D and the X-Pro1 are the only ones to really give me any sense of excitement. I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet sooner or later but I'd really like to get my hands on one first. Unfortunately, it's an hour and a half drive to my favourite camera shop.

I think I'd probably regret selling the X10 so I may just hang on for a bit longer and have both.

Best wishes,
Si

Yes, I feel the same. I remember owning OM cameras and loving them. I don't like the XP1 though - I find it ugly and it feels horrid (like an empty box) but the OVF is a joy. I was a bit concerned when I ordered the OMD, I'm very fussy about IQ and u4/3 picture quality has disappointed me in the past. So far the OMD has exceeded my expectations, but it does need good glass of course.

Try not to sell your X10, those images of yours are just wonderful.

One thing I find fascinating is the way you can watch a long exposure develop on the LCD. Some real ingenious thought has gone into the om-d. I have the 40-150 too and yes it is very sharp.

Yes I have found the free 45mm the 40-150 and to be honest the Kit lens all to be very sharp I cant fault any of the lens I have got at the moment for Sharpness at all..

Just trying to work out what Fast lens to add to my kit as I like fast lens and always had lens 2.8 and below

Beent thinking whether to get a grip this evening but worried about adding weight and bulk to the camera. How many battery does it take?

Has anyone a good image of their OMD with the grip on please both part and just one part please.

Dont suppose anyone got a gripped 7D or similar to compare side by side?

Glad your enjoying the camera Lindsay and glad you managed to get the deal I posted on the 40-150 it is a good lens and so small and light which for me what micro 4/3 is all about. Don't think I could ever go back to a dslr now as the size and weight of the omd is great. I love the panny 25 and it does add a bit of weight to the camera but not too much.

As I'm not a professional and only do this as a hobby I ended up stop taking the Nikon gear out due to the size and weight and ended up losing the bug for photography. Feel completely different now after selling it all as the omd as its so light and I'm learning more as the prime makes you think more about creativity composition and as there's no zoom you move with your feet so it helps me develop.

I also have the Sony rx100 as my backup which I carry with me everyday as its so small but a cracking camera so there's no excuses although in my lunch hour were I work there's not much to shoot.

Andy

Unfortunately Alan I didn't see this deal until 2 days after I had traded a gf3 and 14mm in for a new one of these lenses and £20.

Was quite miffed. I use a crumpler jimmy bo 600 which fits omd with a lens plus the 40-150 and a prime it's really comfy and lite and is well made. Can't believe the price of this now as I paid £40 for mine. I even managed to fit the d3100 and 70-300 in it when I had it bit of a squeeze but fitted.

Cheers andy - just ordered one from amazon - any idea if the pen case is able to accept the OM-d with kit lens on?

I tend to use the Billingham f2.8 a lot. Even though it's small (if you stare at it from the front it's about the size of an A4 sheet of paper) it will take a pro DSLR with a big L lens on it. It easily holds mirrorless kit and lenses, with space for other bits too: http://lindsaydobsonphotography.com/blog/billingham-f2-8/

Still deciding on a grip grrrr dunno what to do bit pricey compare to canon grips

Does make the whole thing feel better I think and a defo if you are going to use old manual film lenses, I wouldn't leave home without my grip attached. It is a two part grip so you can remove the battery section and just use the finger grip. I like it but I did get it free as an early pre-order adopter of the camera.

Mine came with the grip fits very nicely, take just the one battery :)

Is it true need take grip off to take battery out?

Also there rubber at bottom of camera that needs removing for grip can rip easy when pulling off?

Yes, one needs to remove the grip to change the battery in the camera body. For that reason, most people choose to have the grip battery drain first, and use the camera battery as the backup.

I haven't heard about the rubber ripping, but unless you're regularly swapping between using the grip and not using it, this shouldn't be a problem. Just remove it carefully the first time and put it somewhere safe.

Can I also make a polite suggestion to start using pronouns (I, you) and articles (the, a, an) in your posts? Leaving them out reads like teenage text speak! :gag: :D

I leave a charged battery in the camera and change the external grip one when needed, you can set it to use either battery first. There are little rubber patches but I haven't had any trouble with them. It is worth the small effort of removing the grip to replace a battery I think anyway which takes all of 30 seconds or less, no problem for me.

Don't know as I got mine free from Olympus, you could try and get a deal I suppose but I wouldn't expect to get one free with the grip.

I have an OMD, but due to having a 9-month old I haven't had time to read the manual and play with the settings yet. The few pics I've taken so far (ironically photos of my GF2 to sell it!) - default setting JPEGs - seem to be pretty good.

I didn't get a grip included so I thought I'd wait to see if I needed one before buying. Still waiting for my 45mm to arrive.

I'm also torn as to whether to sell the 12-50 and buy a 14-150. There isn't much difference in size and I don't really need the weather-sealing or macro. I have a Panasonic 14-140 for my GF2 but will sell that as there's no need to have that brick now I have IBIS at my disposal.

To much I want but can't have everything.

The IBIS is excellent am amaze how good it is :) you should be taking images of your 9 month old :)

The one I brought came with two 3rd party battery, and their own charger, sometime the 3rd party batt can be a little tighter fitting in the body or the grip.

:)

The little rubber bungs that cover the connectors on the bottom of the body and between the 2 parts of the grip have special places in the grip to store them safely.

You just clip them in  no need to store them anywhere else they could get lost.

The grip might be expensive but I think it's well worth it. Mine is pretty much on the camera all the time now.
