Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

It's arrived, it's arrived!!

I must say I'm well impressed with Hdew - after my initial reservations at buying from an importer they've come up trumps. Everything appears to be UK stock - English manual, UK plug etc.

Right, I'm off to try and figure all those menus out .....

Another 7-14 shot

Great shot Glenn! :notworthy:

It looks like you've use a CPL there (the deep blue of the sky looks like a CPL effect and it appears to vary across the frame), but I didn't think the 7-14 took filters?

Did you hand-hold a filter or is this some clever PP?

Thanks. No filters, it was almost as it appears, just levels and contrast tweaks in Lightroom 4

Very impressive skills and camera :)

Glenn's shots are really gorgeous! Don't tell me that's another lens to add to my list ....

You lot are really inspiring me to get to know my new camera. I've just picked it up and so far it feels very different from anything I've had before, being totally used to DSLRs and basic Fuji X cameras. But initial impressions are good - the EVF is so much better than expected (I was worried about not liking it). A quick and dirty comparison between the OMD and my X100 at 3200 ISO was a revelation - the OMD is virtually as good on the noise stakes (though I would expect the X100 to pull away at higher ratings).

My Oly 40-150 lens is also a surprise - great colours, contrast, and sharpness.

Also - I was concerned about adjusting to Oly colours after Fuji - I switched the OMD to 'muted' colour and 'warm turned off' and stone the crows - almost identical colours to my Fuji. My fears are slowly evaporating.

Now I need to buy it a prime lens to get the best out of it. Decisions ....

Lovely camera weather been rubbish past few days for me to get out :(

I want a macro lens I do macro when weather poor

Thanks. A word of advice - don't start looking at legacy glass. I got rid of my Canon 50D with four lenses, to save weight. Two years later I have this:

camerakit2.jpg

The default settings are a big 'Tango' for me Andrew! I often shoot between different platforms so standardizing the output is really important to reduce post production time. Obviously when shooting RAW on my pro outings it's different, but most of my personal work is JPEG.

Yes, the weather is ***** - most annoying! I'd really like to get out and put this camera through its paces but the dampness doesn't inspire me. Mind you, at least it's weather sealed, that's a real bonus and one of the reasons I'll want to keep it.

I've got the Fuji XE1 and new Fuji f2.8-f4 zoom lens arriving tomorrow, it will be fun giving both cameras a workout.

On a lot of reviews I have read, they say about switching of the warm color :)

I've been thinking of the new Fuji xf1 I think it is the new compact camera for the mrs as the x10 and x100 to big for her liking

Lovely lens collections there :)

Here's a shot with the Panasonic 100-300:

Another cracker grrrrrr

That a lens I've though about if wanting take pictures of birds or animals at zoo etc but been told omd can be tricky at focusing?

Lindsay how's your OMD got anything out of it yet be interested to know

I've just done some quick high ISO tests and I'm amazed, I really wasn't expecting the OMD to be that good on the noise front - it's giving my X100 a run for its money and is noticeably better than the Canon 7D. I'm talking JPEGs (with the NR turned down). I'll do RAW tests next week if time allows.

I also had a quick play with the lens that arrived off Amazon today - the 40-150, it's a little cracker, super sharp with excellent colour and contrast - what a bargain!

I must get a fast prime for my OMD - I might pick one up tomorrow whilst I'm in Park Cameras.

I just need to get used to the funny whirring noise emanating from my new camera ....

I have turned warm off and wow much better if u not of mentioned it I wouldn't of known.

I prefer this omd over the 7d I had. Only think I will miss is taking images of animals at zoo etc

Why would you miss taking photos of animals at a zoo? This camera has a 2x crop so you can get closer to them.

I've not tried it yet but people keep saying AF not fast enough I mean CAF not as quick ???

Birds in flight are the only thing I have struggled with what with them being too quick. I have shot them though.

Ok using CAF??

No I use just normal af, caf I have found it to be a pain with stuff that is too fast, manual pre-focussing is another method I have used for very fast birds like these puffins flying in. I look at it to be a challenge rather than a problem. ;)

Hi Lindsay,

I'm giving this camera some serious consideration lately but I'm a fussy b****r and with that in mind, I've got an easy question for you... :D

How does it compare in terms of AF performance and RAW image quality with the Canon 5DMKIII?

If it's as good as I hope it is, I'll be tempted to drop my X10 and grab one.
Cheers,
Si

Hmmmm So tricky to keep the bird in focus then... so alot of picture taken and alot of thrash and hopefully a few good ones to keep

Congrats on the arrival Lindsay, be sure to update firmware to 1.5 - this will remove the ibis whirring until you press the shutter release.

Some more great shots in the last page or so

The worst thing about the OM-d is price, I can't afford another :D
Congrat on finally getting your new camera Lindsay, enjoy. ;)

Hello Si, lovely to talk to you again. I've not fully tested the OMD yet, and I've not shot any RAW files with it so far. I'll do all this over the next couple of weeks. Indeed, you can't really compare it to something like the MkIII, which is to my mind the finest DSLR on the planet - but so far I am very pleasantly surprised by the OMD, it really is very sophisticated and a pleasure to use. JPEG engines have improved so much that I shoot RAW less and less these days, only on my pro outings to be honest. The OMD's image quality is certainly superior to my 7D and JPEG noise control is very close to my X-100. Autofocus quality is of course dependent on a number of factors, such as aperture and focal length, and whether you're using a prime or a zoom. With the kit zoom the OMD autofocus is extremely snappy, but I don't think anything on the planet will come close to the MkIII's performance. I doubt the OMD is much use for sports or tracking targets like fast wildlife. But for a compact system the OMD rocks. By the way I'm picking up the Fuji XE1 and zoom in the morning, comparing that to the OMD will be quite interesting.

I won't be getting rid of my X10, it's just lovely to own and so handy to pop in my pocket. But in every respect the OMD is in a different league.

Thanks Alan, I'll do that. :)

I'm desperate to get out and take pictures with it but probably won't get any time until the weekend. I'm sitting here constantly playing with it, I've now got it set up nicely with buttons assigned etc and the colours tweaked to match my preferences. I must say it's wonderfully customisable and the EVF is actually very nice. I think I might buy it a prime lens in the morning, one of the ones you recommended, possibly the 45 f1.4, that does look gorgeous.

Thanks for reminding me to update, I've been so busy with work, I haven't picked up the camera for about a fortnight and had completely forgotten that the update was out.

It's certainly not cheap. I'm selling off my Canon APS-C bodies and lenses in order to fund the mirrorless systems - I'm confident the OMD and the XE1 will fill the gap nicely for the normal portraiture side of things. At the end of the day they're just work tools, but I must admit to 'liking' the OMD in a way I never liked my DSLRs!

Lovely brace of cameras there Lindsay

Enjoy the OMD, it's a fantastic camera, puts a smile on my face when I use it, my 5D2 never had that effect

Sound like it has bitten you the way it bit me  I had been Canon for many decades. Not one regret moving it on and the om-d give me that feeling I got when the Canon A1 was first put into my hand. :D

Hi Lindsay,

Thanks for replying! :)

I'll admit to having a slightly nostalgic view of the OM-D having been a major OM fan at the start of my photographic journey (many years ago). Of all the mirrorless offerings, the OM-D and the X-Pro1 are the only ones to really give me any sense of excitement. I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet sooner or later but I'd really like to get my hands on one first. Unfortunately, it's an hour and a half drive to my favourite camera shop.

I think I'd probably regret selling the X10 so I may just hang on for a bit longer and have both.

Best wishes,
Si

Must admit I felt rather the same when I got a G2, especially once I had an FD adapter so I could use the same lenses on both :)

As I mentioned on another thread, I'm currently trying to decide between the OM-D and Fuji's XE-1 as a replacement for the G2.
