I'm in the process of selling all my Nikon gear to fund the purchase of an OMD. Can't wait. i've heard nothing but good things about image quality and build.

Congratulations Daz, hopefully you'll enjoy the world of m43's as much as me. Since selling my 5D2 and L lenses I've not looked back at all ;)

Congrats Alan on the incoming E-M5, you'll love it.

I would hold back on the congrats for now Dave....:D

I've got the 5D2 from work this evening!

D800 is amazing but not for me, the 5D2 is also not for me.

Still got the OM at the top of my list - am tempted to order a silver one from amazon right this minute but I've still not held one in my grubby mitt.

Going past a big currys tomorrow so might be able to take a look then if they have one  :bang:

I am following your progress Alan :)

Best try one in your hands first before you hit the buy button;)

I have taken the plunge - OM purchased on Monday night after selling all my Nikon DSLR gear, lenses, flash etc. With 2 small children my gear was growing and it was going out less and less. I did suggest we leave the kids in the boot and not the camera gear but this didn't go down too well with the missus!! ;-)

Unfortunately the courier company used by the shop I purchased have failed to deliver next day delivery - should have been today! Stayed in all day and never arrived, tracking info says dispatched for delivery (7am) then later in the day returned to hub!!?? I am not happy!

I have gone for the 12-50mm kit to get me started. I am also looking at the grip, 1 part to make it a slightly better hold and 2 part when I am doing a longer photo session.

What do poeple think of the FL-600R flash? I do quite a bit of indoor work over winter months - mainly close up.

Also I have found 14-42mm II R lens for £130 - looks a little smaller for a walk around zoom lens than the 12-50mm. Anyone any experience of the IQ on the OM?

I am planning on the Panny 20mm, Oly 45mm to start and when I have a little more cash looking for a 100-300mm lens and maybe some expensive glass. Quike like the look of the Voigtlander 25mm - think this maybe some way off.

I am doing a City and Guilds evening photography course from Sept (going back to school after a 25 year break. Looking forward to using the new gear whilst doing the course.

Lots of questions from a newbie - sorry!

Managed to track down an OM-D to hold and fiddle with today...

Thoughts - feels well built, solid, is not much bigger than the GX1 - the hump being the main difference, nice ergonomics, squishy buttons, extensive(!) menu options, snappy AF - even in the darkest corners of the shop, kit lens has some nice features too..

But....

That damned EVF! :bonk: I really don't like the 'electronicness' of it. It still lags and tears - just like my G1 and GF1 EVFs did.

Still on the fence :cuckoo:

My OM has arrived! After some pain with the courier employed by Jessops!

I was passing a Jessops today and noticed they were offering 20% off a spare battery when purchased with a camera. I got home and checked the website and to my horror the battery has gone up on their website to £120 each! Ouch. Anyone had a similar experience?

Enough talk about gear and whether it is any good or not, go and take photos :D

I was just experimenting with various menu settings this morning and managed to lock the camera, even turning it off had no effect, so I had to remove the battery. Was using it gripped with Oly 45mm attached. I've read that this issue seems quite common, anybody else had it? I'm using firmware v1.2

Amazing shot Glenn, saw it over at MU43 earlier, need to get out with my 7-14 this weekend.

My first shot with the OMD - with kit lens

Off to purchase the Panny 14mm tomorrow - £200 with £50 cash back - seems a good buy.

I am a happy bunny!

How many of you OM-D owners also have a dslr?

Despite my appreciation of M43 I don't think I can bring myself to have it exclusively, for that reason I can't help thinking that a GX1 and 14 or 20 prime is the way to go and then run it alongside my dslr on occasions when I need something small and lightweight.

Although I did this previously (7d & g1/gf1 and d5100 & gx1) and got annoyed at having multiple camera bodies and 2 different systems?

Such a shame the x10 and x100 have too many quirks !

I'm OM-D only but I have been seriously considering a DSLR again, had a shot of a friends D7000 in the week and it was a pleasure to use and part of me thinks that quite a bit of my current use could be done better with a DSLR (motorsport/aviation) I'm a bit reluctant though as the OMD kit takes up little room in a bag, ideally I'd have both!

I sold my first OM-D and regretted it, before replacing it I bought a D7000 and returned it..........http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=418164

IMVHO there is not a Nikon to match the OM-D for quality and finish at that price, approx £1k, I wish there were, I'd have it.

I did consider a D300s but concluded it was a little long in the tooth.

Cannot speak of Canon, no experience.

You might be happier buying s/h, they go for around £100.

Just sold mine here in response to a wanted ad

Thanks - a got a little impatient. Was out today and wanted a pancake instead of the kit lens to wonder round with. Got it down to £195 - so with the £50 cash back not too bad. I also don't have enough posts to get on the classifieds.

Really pleased with my results today. Just a quick outing but nice to have something so small. Reckon I have taken my best photo's in the last 2 days! :D

This has been mentioned on here before.

Anyone any experience of screen protectors. Do I need one? What's the screen like for scratching etc?

Thanks

I can share how I came to my decision to buy the OMD.

For me it was down to money. I would have loved to hang onto my DSLR kit but could not get the OMD and keep it. Was getting a bit fed of carrying so much stuff around and was leaving it at home more and more. Especially with 2 very small children. I sold it all to get me well set up with the Olympus.

I toyed with 2 camera's - but was concerned I would not get to know each camera 100% and therefore compromise on both.

Thought about full frame but would have had to upgrade my glass = more money.

My photography is portrait, architecture and landscapes. Most of my images never make it off my laptop. When I put this and the cost into perspective I could not justify the jump to full frame. I will never be a pro! I also quite fancy a bit of street photography - having a small camera gives me more confidence to have a crack.

Although the D7000 looks impressive I was not getting a feeling from the forums there was enough of an improvment to move from my D90.

The image quality on the OMD for my type of photography versus the D90 is similar. And as I get more and more into the OMD I would guess far superior.

Lenses for micro 4/3's look reasonable in comparison to DSLR lenses (on the whole). You can go expensive - £800+. But if you want to go for the best glass for DSLR you need to double or treble this amount. Therefore my thinking in the next 4/5 years I will get more use out of this camera over a DSLR and spend less.

I could have spent less on micro 4/3's but wanted to buy one of the front runners as it should hold it's technology for longer.

Don't get me wrong - I win the lottery tonight and I would be straigth out for a D4 - but still not sure it would be out of the bag that much now I have this little gem.

I guess it's down to individual preference, budget and style of photography. :)

Thought I would post a few pics. Curbar Edge with the Oly and 45-200 which I got for a bargain £150 new inc £50 cashback from Argos
