Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

I have the 90mm macro and the 12-40 F2.8 Pro.

But I also have my lumix FF kit with the S5II. 14-28, 20-60, 24-105, 70-300 and the 50 mm and 85 mm 1.8s and a 10mm F2.8 fish eye.

So I don’t really NEED more lol

But,

I don't use the Lumix kit much so that's why I was thinking of trading it in and just using the OM system as most of my stuff is macro. I have a flash and diffuser etc. I don't post my images anywhere really, not print them.

Close up and macro lol
.... Then neither 8-25 nor 40-150 but get the 90mm Macro ~ Ooops!I just seen you posted that you already have one!

It's a great macro lens. I used to use the Lumix system and the sigma 105 but Lumix can't match OM for macro (in my opinion).

These are lovely. Have you had a camera converted to infra red?
Thanks. I didn’t have it converted. I bought an e-m5 secondhand from eBay and it was already converted with a 720nm filter. I’ve recently become obsessed with it and have barely used my other camera

It looks like fun. I imagine you need the right scenes to make it work. The detail on the cathedral is amazing.

Hi All.

I currently shoot birds with a Sony RX10iv which I love but I want to improve and try and get some better results. I also shoot macro and the odd landscape (other kit is the Sony A6700 + 10-20 and probably a Sigma 105 (not bought yet))

So... I was thinking of something like an OM-1, Olly 100-400, 60mm macro and something else to cover the wide end. The 100-400 seems sharp from the samples I've looked at and it's not too heavy, the 60mm macro reviews well and there are a few options for the wide end.

Any advice/words of wisdom would be appreciated!

Thanks, Mike

All I can say in response to you @dibbly dobbler is the OM-1 and 90 mm is in a different league when compared with my previous Lumix and Sigma 105 macro.

The 60 mm is also a great lens and will make it's way into my collection later.

I also owned both the Laowa 2x macro and the Laowa 2.5-5x macro for L Mount (I have a nisi rail I used to use) and I'm still glad I made the switch to this system.

If it were me, I wouldn't buy the Sigma and I'd just use the OM system for the macro.

Just my 2p.

Thanks Adam. I noticed the 90mm and it looks amazing but pretty pricey so I'll probably start with the 60mm and maybe upgrade in due course if I take to the system. Cheers :)

Yes it's not the cheapest but I traded a lot of stuff in at the time (like the two Laowa lenses) so it took the sting out of it a little.

I'll probably end up with an OM3/OM5 at some point at which point I'll grab the 60mm also.

Honestly it's a fabulous system for macro.

You can certainly see the world in a new light with infrared photography. I highly recommend it for days out. Particularly when the sun is shining.

..... The architectural detail of the cathedral suits the technique extremely well.

It doesn't need any extra but I am curious whether generally infra red images can be shot using the OM in-camera High Res feature to capture even more detail.
I don’t see why not? My camera is just the original Olympus e-m5 without that feature. You wouldn’t have to go all out and convert an OM camera to try it though. You could buy an R72 filter. That was my first foray into infrared. I liked the results so much that I wanted a converted camera and I don’t regret getting it. It ‘s also a bonus not having to use a tripod like you would with the R72 filter.

I still use my full spectrum converted Lumix G3 with good results with the 720nm filter.

Obviously I can't post them here as it's not Olympus / OM System.

Rather than camera specific forums, maybe we should have one dedicated to 720nm IR photography? I feel I might drive some ppl away from this forum if I keep posting my IR pics on here, which I wouldn’t want to do.

I think there is a thread for IR. I'm sure I've posted in it before.

Here it is:

Awesome. Thank you for sharing this with me.

Where do you get these cameras from that have been converted? Is it just eBay and those sites?

I think they are lovely images and didn't realise they were IR initially
I just came across this one eBay. It was cheaper to buy a secondhand camera already converted than it would’ve been to convert a camera I already owned

Well I treated myself to the OM 40-150 F2.8 today. I think this will be a great option for images of my little dog running around (and the two cats we now have also).
.... A great treat! It's such a versatile lens and takes either the MC-14 or MC-20 very well when more reach is wanted.

Be careful with the clever sliding lens hood because an accidental heavy knock can spill all its tiny ballbearings out! But there is a reversible third-party lens hood available.

Yes I've read about the hood.

I'd read somewhere online that there is another lens hood that fits, so may try and dig that link out and order a spare.
.... I've got one as a spare. It's a Fotodiox C-ET-78 (mk)II. Made for a Canon lens but fits perfectly.

Thanks I will order one at some point. Wife might kill me if I bring anything else photography related into the house this week.

Could you just confirm it is this one.

Many thanks for your help
.... Yes it is exactly that one ~ Your link to Amazon states I purchased one on 10th July 2020.

6 squid to buy and about 26 squid for delivery from across the pond in Trumpland! But still much cheaper than an OM replacement.

After my original one threw its tiny ballbearings onto a sandy beach I bought a Fotodiox replacement but also an OM replacement. My intention was to have the spare OM lens hood in case of offering my lens for sale and to continue with the 'safer' Fotodiox hood ~ But since 2020 I have had no problem with the replacement OM hood and the Fotodiox is the spare! :D

The falling apart issue was quite common and so I wonder if Olympus (as it still was then) did something about it by revising its structure.
