Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

In other news, Stagecoach sent me an email today, asking to use this

adrenaline alley by damianmkv, on Flickr

At the rear of their buses around Corby as they are looking for images of things to do there

I emailed them back asking what their protocol is and do they give the photographer some...err.. "consideration"

Part of me thinks " ooh, that's nice - it's just sitting there so they can use it" and part of me thinks "they should pay a small amount as it cost me £11:50 to get in there"

I think they should pay you something as they are using it to boost business.

I don't think they have a position that I can see - there were loads of people in there with cameras and GoPros, and I can't see anything on their website

Fair enough but worth verifying before agreeing to the bus companies proposal I would say...

:beer:As an aside, a film company used a video clip of mine for a TV programme. They took it from YouTube. I saw in the film they produced on TV. My clip was only 10 seonds worth

Next day I received an email, asking where to pay me. The following day I received £40 ish...........

There was an in-between company, they got half, so the fee was £80 ish............

Your photo is really good, congrats on being "used"...

Well sadly my new EM1 MK2 is being shipped back to Olympus today for repair. Have a very dodgy LCD screen that only works when it feels like it (and never when I want it). Olympus and myself think it's probably a ribbon cable issue or something, as even when the screen is completely folded out to the side (so automatically switching off the EVF), i get a completely black, unresponsive screen even though I can still tap it to shoot, however I can't see what it's aiming at, and can't playback any images on the screen itself (only the EVF).

Camera was purchased from SRS Microsystems just before Christmas, and I have to say Nikki at SRS has been great and kept in contact with me all though and even spoken to Olympus and their in-store reps to get advice, however with no "spare" EM1 MK2's available yet, they couldn't just replace it (although they said if a camera was available, they definitely would). To be fair, the guys at Olympus UK have been very understanding and so far, very efficient, so let's hope the repair goes without a hitch !

My only worry is a comment one of the tech guys made that if it needs new parts, they are currently rarer than hens teeth as Olympus Japan hasn't shipped any spares yet, so don't know how long I'm going to be without the camera for :(

This is my first ever Olympus issue in 6 years use, so will be interesting to see how they fair against mediocre to average service received from Nikon in the past ?

That's a shame. I think, to be honest I would be pushing for a refund and trying to source one from elsewhere, you'd be within your rights as it is faulty.

Hear what you are saying Ned, and if the repair can't be done immediately then I will, but the Olympus tech did also mention that due to the lack of spares, the repair team might replace the camera with a brand new item (if one is available), so fingers crossed.

Sorry to hear of this, fingers crossed you get it sorted quickly, preferably with a replacement.

Managed to get myself a mint 7-14mm at a decent price last week. Great lens, but flares very easily on my GX8 with strong light sources anywhere near the edge of the frame. Going to take a bit of learning this lens methinks, not least because it's the widest lens I've used in years!

Simon.

Might go Fuji - heard they're the next big thing

Since the last big thing

Yes, I find I get a lot of flare too. Reviews say it is good for flare but I often get it.

Sometimes I take 2 photos, one with a finger in shot blocking the flare and then I merge the two together in photoshop.

But then I'll put a spanner in the works with that and tell you about the painterly effect, and then that's all you'll see after that :sneaky::whistle:

So I'll need to go deaf and blind. That should help

My photos might be better too

I was doing exactly that yesterday :). Quite a lot of reviews mention the flaring issue, but I was surprised at how easily it did it with any bright light source remotely near the edge of the frame. Just need to learn its quirks, as the IQ out of it flare aside is superb.

When doing panoramics with Olympus is there any advantage of using the panoramic mode for RAW shooters? As far as I can see it's only useful if you want to so a stitched jpeg in camera, other than that I can't see any benefit of using it over taking 'normal' overlapping pics and stitching in post? I wish all camera manufacturers had sweep panorama, it's the one thing I miss about Sony ;)

I just stitch them in LR it is easier.

I think it pays to wait until a product has been in circulation for sometime before purchase.

I learnt that with my D750 :( To be fair though I bought the EM5-II on launch and didn't have any early production issues (just shutter shock which was solved when I got a replacement ;))

Not to knock their after sales service but for several days now srs have been showing the mkii as "in stock" in fact as of now they are as well as the 12 40 kit version which was awaiting stock yesterday so that would suggest at least daily updates in which case the claim of no replacement bodies available I would question, at around 1 month old I would insist on replacement or refund tbh not a repair.....

Hoping to get a replacement em1 from MPB this week - what are the common faults to look out for (if any)?

The current em1 i had from them has a faulty 1/2 lever. Also, the up on the 4 way controller works but has no 'click' when pressing (minor i know!)

Got the replacement em1 from MPB - only 230 actuations! Happy bunny again. Now got to get the camera settings sorted again!

Two questions:-
- What have people set the function buttons to?
- What settings have people assigned to mysets?

TBH the setting straight out of the box are pretty good for me. The only thing I've changed is that I've made Fn1 return the AF point to the centre. As far as mysets I've made one so that it's set for BBF and one for tripod landscape use, ie Aperture f8, ISO 100 and IBIS off. Also I have this set to BBF too.

Myset 1 Standard Settings
Myset 2 Bracketing on. + Hi Speed
Myset 3 Tripod mode. Low ISO + IBIS off + a few others.
3= "3 legs" and 2 = "+/-" as a way to remember it. Because Olympus continue to deliver poor ergonomics. Once you have set a myset, it's very difficult to find out what was set. Especially when out in the field. Please let us add a description or rename it Olympus.

I have an em-5 which shuts down after each shutter actuation and has to be turned off and on again. Happens every time. Images are fine but cannot review or take next exposure until camera has been switched off and back on again. I've tried resetting but no joy. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I didn't know you could set a BBF on the Olympus

Can you tell my how you do it?

I've had an E-M5 (now sold) but no such problems. If it's under warranty send it to Olympus service, who are very good in my experience.

It's in the AEL button setting, set it so that AEL controls S-AF. I don't know if it's a true BBF as I've not tried it with C-AF.

Thanks I'll give it a go in the morning
You also have to set the shutter release not to do AF. Release only.
Ah same as my D750
I've never really got my head around the Olympus menu I've always had Nikon.

I've not even looked at the my menu options

Cable Release?

I have a OMD 5 MkII and thinking about getting a cable release, what does anyone on here use?

(rant)The price of these things is silly when all most of them do is the same as the old cable release, press the damn shutter release(/rant)
