Hi All,

I'm wondering if anyone can help.

My friend has given me this old Olympus OM-2N camera that she bought somewhere but she's no idea if it works.

the battery cover is missing, so I'm wondering if there's anywhere i could get one? I've googled for Olympus OM-2N parts but nothing comes up.

or would the camera possibly work without the battery cover?

Any info appreciated.

Cheers,

Scott

I can't remember off hand but does the battery not only work the light meter? If I'm correct you will need the cover in order for it to work though.

Yup, and it works the shutter too :'(

I'm thinking the cover would just be metal to the positive pole of the battery, so thinking maybe i could retrofit something metallic, see if it worked.

Are you sure? I'm fairly confident it only works the meter and not the shutter.

You might want to contact Miles Whitehead of MW Camera repair, he is highly recommended on here for camera CLA's and repairs but he also does work making adapters and other 'custom' items so if he's not got a replacement battery cover then I'm sure he could machine one.

There again another way could be just to nick one off a cheap broken OM-2n.

Your possibly correct, only really started looking into this camera tonight,

Although when I press the shutter button, nothing happens, likewise if I flick the film winder next to the shutter button, nothing happens.

So saying that, If the battery doesn't control any of that, it's not a good sign?? :-(

Well my ones missing a battery cover! Haha! Maybe that's why!

Oh and thanks for the info, I might just give that guy a buzz.

It seems you're right. It was the OM1 that was fully manual. I thought they both were.

I wouldn't send anything to Miles at the moment he's snowed under. I sent him a Bessamatic for a CLA 3 months ago and he hasn't got round to it yet, apparently he's had an influx of repairs from 'professional photographers' so I've been bumped down the list. Have to admit I'm getting a little cheesed off.

The winder cover is a smaller disc then the battery cover

Fair enough, they're both identical and interchangeable on the OM2-SP

Actually hang on - if I can make Minolta XD7 one fit I have a spare!

eBay has lots of bits and pieces from dismantled bodies.

Thanks for trying anyway.

I can get get a battery cover for £5 via the link above.

Only gripe is they want £7.50 on top for postage!!

There must be someone in F&C who lives around the Croydon area who could buy it for you, then pop it in the post with a 1st class stamp?

Hi, Newton Ellis is Liverpool have them. 0151 236 1391.
The shop is a typical old style repair shop with bits and pieces everywhere.
I've just rung him, and he's recently taken in a non working OM2N which has what you want on it. Give him a ring. Sorry I didn't ask price, and if postage is too much I'll be in Liverpool on Saturday and can pick it up for you.

Arundel Photographic might also have something like this.

RE Miles Whitehead - the chances are he will have a spare rather than needing to craft one. Worth calling as well.

Spoke to the guy and he has one.

Wants £10 for it and £2 for postage, so same as the other site.

So think I'll just go for that. :-)

I'm sure you can pick up a skanky OM10 on ebay for a lot less and then sell it on minus battery cover for simialr money?

There's one for an OM2 on eBay (might fit N?) for £8 incl delivery.

on another note,

Does anyone know if the film winder mechanism on this camera is electronic?

I've noticed when i flick the film winder lever, nothing happens, nothing moves, the film spindle or the spindle that pulls the film across, none of that moves.

Are the batteries required for any of this to work?

Sounds like your camera might need the attentions of an expert. If the wiinding-on lever is moving more than 45degrees then you should see something moving - if nothing's moving then you've probably got a slipping clutch or a gear wheel that's not engaging. I've got an OM-1N in the same state.

If the mirror is in the locked up position from having no batteries, then the advance lever will not advance. The transport mechanism is independant of power, but it is interlocked with the mirror mech so it can only be advanced after the shutter has fired.

Mirror is down, nothing happens when the shutter button is pressed.

Also when the lever is flicked, it doesn't spring back into position, it also doesn't flick all the way round, it stops dead halfway with no give
