Olympus OM-2n Problem

As always I turn to the guru's of film for help. :D

I have been given (with the understanding that I make a charitable donation) a nearly mint looking Olympus OM-2n with the 50mm & 75-150mm Zuiko lenses all in a very sturdy leather case, oh and also a little box with a spare viewfinder glass and the kit to change it. Very nice.

Now the problem is that it won't wind on nor will the shutter fire....:eek: I have searched on line for a solution, reset button, B setting and renewed the batteries but to no avail. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem?

Is the mirror stuck in the up position?

Have you tried it on all shutter speeds?

No, the mirror is down but I haven't tried all shutter speeds yet. Off home now and its still in work so I'll give it a gentle tap tomorrow.

Dont want to hijack the thread, but I have a similar problem with an OM10 and the mirror IS stuck in up position.
What does this mean please?
 
The OM2 has a reset button on the lower left lens mount.

To quote -

" RESET PROCEDURE"
* If the mirror is up and the shutter locked press the RESET button at the lower left corner of the body mount, and rotate the manual shutter speed ring until the reset mark (*)
is aligned with the red triangle on the lens mount. Then the mirror comes down, and the shutter is unlocked."
 
i saw this but the OM2n doesn't have it, it has a reset lever which also sets to manual or auto and checks the battery, tried it, didn't work.

99% of the time it means the battery is flat, replace them and the mirror will return. Don't try to force it, the mirror is locked by the electromagnets which control shutter speeds.
 
My Boy was GIVEN a OM2n + that same Zuiko zoom by a widow lady -- well HE gets good results -- I think the problem is with yours that it has not been USED for a long time -- the same fault happens with Minolta X-300 cameras -- if it has not been used then the electronic circuits have not had any 'electricity from the battery' through for such a long time the resistors go rotten.

Brand new batteries installed bud.
If I press down the lever just inside the body, the mirror drops down and the shutter will fire, but it wont return! (the mirror that is)
Been working fine until a couple of weeks ago, I took off the 50mm lens because it had fungus inside and binned it.
Not got another yet though.

Have you checked that the batteries are actually getting power to the camera ok, are the viewfinder shutter speed lights working as they should?
 
Maybe the string has broken...just joking from seeing a picture posted;) anyway good luck... and at least the lenses are good.

Hmm, theres only 1 light in the viewfinder, a red one left side center next to f8.
The battery check light on the front is red and a continuous beep sounds when the dial is turned to 'check'

Stupid question, I know, but did you give it a while? If there's no film in it, it wildly over-exposes, so it could be giving you a 2 minute "exposure".

Yeh, left it switched on on my desk, but nothing happened. Also flicked bulb on/off couple of times in case it was stuck. Think it may be goosed! Just put a wanted add for a new 50mm too!

Aye sounds like something has broken. You could look into having it repaired or you could just get another working from ebay, they're pretty cheap.
 
Ok, just spent 20 mins with the bloomin' thing and I think its fritzed. I've tried all the tricks from t'interweb and given it a gentle tap (or two) and it still won't wind on or fire. Strangely the meter works fine and the self-timer runs down but does not fire the shutter..... any last thoughts or ideas before I consign to the scrap bin?
 
I'm fairly sure either a larger hammer or a few rounds of 7.62mm will sort it out Andy.

Yeh, not worth a repair to be honest given it's age. It's a bit of a treasure though, given to me by a good friend who's no longer with us.
Anyone got one spare? ;)
