Olympus E410 help please

exposure metering is set to centered weight, not focus... :) you can not focus the whole picture :)

for basic config of the oly cameras I'd have a look at http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/43/e510-sett.html and http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/43/e510-rev.html

that link says 510, but the first covers both 410 and 510 as I understand it the differences are basically size, image stabilisation and slightly different control layout (the 510 has shortcuts on the arrow keys which are very useful).

Depending on what you are taking photos of you can get a lot of it in focus (look up hyperfocal distance) - but there are limits.

You can set the 510 to use only one of the autofocus points I presume the 410 is the same?

I'm presuming (righty or wrongly) that you've come from a P&S camera and this is your first DLR.

On the P&S you would have had a large DOF (Depth of field) due to the small size of the sensor, meaning that more of the picture was in focus. On the DSLR the larger sensor means the DOF is narrower, meaning less is in focus. This can be overcome by selecting a smaller apature (Higher number), but this will, in turn, mean longer shutter speeds (Unless you increase the ISO).

Hope that made sense - if not i'm sure someone can explain it better than me :)

gav. like you ive gone to the 410 a few hiccups. ive set mine to 400asa.raw . normal balance. i focus manually as close as poss to what i want or just past, then part press release to fine focus. ive not had much problem with this if any just with card now sorted.the disc should tell you all else you need know.Have you tried manual instead of auto for depth of field or selective mode for landscape, portrait etc, might poss need tripod in low light i did for evening shots. hope this gives you a base to work from
