Hi guys,

Currently wanting a grip for my Olympus E-M5.2 and I see plenty of cheapy third-party options on eBay for around £20 - in the past I have always avoided such products and normally bought the cameras own brand (would always buy official Canon Battery grips for example)

However, the Olympus HLD-8G provides a bit of a conundrum. From what I can tell, the grip part of it blocks access to the battery, so changing the battery involves removing it every time - can anyone confirm or deny this?
Also the additional battery compartment, as I don't shoot Pro level work anymore just isn't useful for me. I mainly only shoot landscape stuff so do not struggle for battery usage. So I am not keen on paying for a component I will not use.

Does anyone have any experience with any third party grips for this camera, if so can you share which ones and your feedback on it, please?

-----

Ignore questions surrounding Arca-Swiss, figured it out. Thanks! :)

TIA!
Jake

I bought a cheap generic 3rd party grip for £20 and so far I have been very happy with it. It seems well made and attaches firmly to the camera. The only problem I have with it is if you have the portrait section of the grip attached it can restrict movement of the LCD. Regarding the grip you will need a Arca Swiss head to attach your camera, via the grip, to the tripod

I have an arca type grip for the Pen-f, as the tripod mount on the camera is really close to the front. The grip has a 1/4 UNC mount in the center. I'm going to replace my manfroto type mounts soon anyway as the arca ones seem better, less moving parts to fall off.
I removed the portrait section as I can't see the point if your tripod head can move 90 deg anyway.

The portrait section allows you to keep the camera central to the tripod rather than hanging at the side. Essential for panoramic's.

Well I never knew why the portrait section was there until now! Thank you!

And thanks for your other replies (and to you Pete!)

OK coming around to third party this seems like the best options

Basically its a copy of the Olympus ECG-2 Handgrip. Also, checking reviews on the HLD-8G, it doesn't seem to have very well thought out ergonomics!

I saw those, what I liked about the one I linked is the textured grip. Made it look like a higher quality rip off :D - at least in pics anyway!
