Olympus cameras & thumbs up grip

I thought I'd share this with people on this website. I have a thumbs up grip which I was previously using on a Fujifilm X-E2. Recently I decided to try it on the tiny Olympus e-pl6. It turns out that this was a big mistake.

I acquired the camera from a family member and was considering getting the vf-4 as I like the idea of a tilting viewfinder as on the Panasonic gx7. However, the thumbs up grip is now permanently stuck on the camera. I've tried sliding a pen knife under it and have just scratched the camera.

I strongly advise any Olympus camera owners not to use a thumbs up grip on their camera(s). I'm now unable to use any accessories for the hot shoe on this camera and it has also covered a couple of the buttons making them difficult to use.

This is deeply frustrating and hopefully posting this will dissuade others from making the same mistake.

Of course, if anyone knows of any possible solutions, then I would be keen to try them.

Thank you

Take it to an independent repair place. In this situation, I would contact Don Clark in Wootton under Edge.

You must have had to force it on? That would have set alarm bells ringing for me to begin with.

It was a little tight, but no tighter than it was on the Fuji and I didn't have the same problem. Oh well, lesson learnt.

A good pliers would probably do the job, you might mark the thumb grip but I'd be looking to save the camera first. Grab the thumb grip with the pliers tight, and grip the camera with the other hand.

I care not for the grip. I'll try some pliers at home later tonight. Thanks for the tip

Just be careful not to pull at an angle, dead straight outward. I reckon it should work if you take your time.

Thanks. after jiggling with pliers and a few gentle taps with the screwdriver, it came off. the cameras a little scratched and a bit of plastic that looks like part of the hot shoe came off, but I just tested the vf-4 and it works!

Nice one :) I know the frustration, I had a macro extension tube stuck on a 50mm lens before, had to brave it with a pliers in that case also
