Have a look at the old OM cameras and tell me why Oly would put the VF on the side. Never get all the fancination with having the viewfinder at the top left.

I think Oly may have a winner on their hands here, I'll be keeping an eye on it to see if it can produce the goods which it should.

No I meant viewfinder still center just not such a big hump. My Dad has an OM-10 which I used as a kid. Still works to this day. Theres something special about them and I just love the feel. :) The price has been rumoured to be 1100 body only and 1300 with kit lens. I think the kit lens is going to be the new weather sealed Olympus zoom that has just been released. I'm not sure if the above prices were euros or dollars. Either way it usually translates almost directly into GBP anyway sadly despite exchange rates.
 
If they were truely going for retro OM feel, the hotshoe would easily fall off and get lost, and be impossible to find replacements because they stopped making them 30 years ago, and *everyone* has lost their shoes.

The camera blocks less of your face when the VF at the top left. It's lot easier to have a conversation with someone while taking their photo, plus it's less intimidating.

Actually I think the idea is that you can see what else is going on with your left eye. e.g. what is about to come into frame.

(I guess there's also an advantage with these small cameras that having the viewfinder to the left gives more space for you to grip it on the right hand side...).
 
Can't wait to play with one at local Camera shops!

Will be more balance with my heavy 58mm 1.4 rokkor!

There's also the data port up there though, Required for stuff like the wifi sender and video mics.

It's hardly huge.
 
Just had a look at the images on my laptop - wow! Best looking camera I've seen since those back-cover Oly adverts that used to run on 1980s issues of Nat Geo.....
 
Not interested in it, not just brand, just does nothing for me

The E-M5 however looks like it would be a brilliant second camera for when the 7D is too big though! If only all brands created a nostalgic style 4/3 camera, I'd be wary of getting one as then I'd have 2 different lens formats....
 
Looks great to me, I'm sure this will sound the next phase of m4/3 cameras. I didn't appreciate how small it was, just look at the size comparison next to Canon 1100D! I will now seriously consider if it's time to think about selling my DSLR gear.
 
I really like the look of this. If it feels like some of the old OMs in the hand then I may weaken and buy one. Whenever I use one of my film cameras I wish there was a digital version. A digital OM, ME-Super or FM have always been on my wish list.
 
Very tempted to upgrade my G3 now, down side is the price, if
it's going to be £1000 then it's too much, at £700 then maybe!
 
I really can see the pen series evolving into rangefinder style cameras now that oly have got the evf business sorted out. It would give the pen range a new lease of life. Instead of bringing out so many variations of one camera. Lol how many pens has there been now!
 
I don't think the Pen's will get a built in EVF, similar to the Panasonic GF and GX series. Olympus will want a clear distinction for their products, OM-D will get everything, Pen's will have bits of the OM-D.

Having spent most of the morning looking over various websites I'm really impressed with the EM-5, will be looking at getting it with the 12-50mm, April can come fast enough!

The 2 part grip is a great idea being able to choose config depending on situation. Why is the lens so slow though despite its size?
 
I think the size of the lens defeats the purpose of this camera - hence why I probably won't buy it, despite me loving Olympus, my OM2n and my Zuiko lenses.

HOWEVER - I know nothing about Olympus's AF primes - can someone school me on the performance and affordability of Olympus's pancakes? Then I would seriously consider buying this if I can pair it with one of them and get good image quality.

Am I right in thinking that micro 4/3'ds equivalent 35mm focal lengths are x2? So a 25mm on M4/3 is the equivalent of 50mm on FF?

Have a look at the Oly 17mm 2.8 and the Panny 20mm 1.7 (aka. the legend) for pancake lenses. Also check out the Panny 25mm 1.4, Oly 12mm 2 and 45mm 1.8, not pancakes but are be very good primes and not that big.

Yes you are right about the crop factor, so take the above lenses and x2 to get the FF equivalent.
 
He just says that it's waterproof from any angle, even when the battery grip is used. Don't think theres anything we don't already know on that page.
 
No one's come up with any comparison pics against a proper OM yet hsve they?
 
Love the look of the body and the concept of a rugged high-spec retro M4/3 body, but that kitlens isn't impressing me. Looks like an excellent 24-100 effective range, but f/3.5-6.3 and it's not very compact. Still, being an olympus lens there's a good chance it'll redeem itself with superb optics.

If I could afford it I would love to have one of these with a panny 20 f/1.7, but given this type of camera will always be a secondary for me I'll never be putting that much cash towards it.

I think this would be great with the 14/2 25/1.4 and 45/1.8 primes. Lovely set of lenses with a good looking, yet practical camera. If I had the money and didn't alreay have far too much kit I would go for it!

Yes, it's not the fastest lens in the world, but 24-100mm equivalent is very handy, and the other features of the lens are pretty impressive:
  • It is switchable between either manual or motorised/electronic zoom (handy for smooth zoom with video)
  • It has the Olympus "MSC" silent auto-focussing (again, a boon for video)
  • It has a 0.72x equivalent macro mode
  • It has a programmable function button on the lens barrel
  • Oh, and it's also weatherproofed

...and if you still don't like it, you could always buy the camera body-only. :thumbs:

It does seem to be a lot of money for it is. If they had developed a method for it to focus standard 4/3 lenses at full speed then a premium price might have been more justified but even then I would have thought a much lower priced, plastic bodied, non-sealed camera would have sold a lot more.

Olympus were hopelessly inept in the way they introduced and developed the 4/3 system and I suspect m4/3 might follow the same path tbh.

Who knows what olympus have planned for the new om-d range, maybe this is the top end camera of a range that will deliver some "lite" versions with different body construction and less features at lower prices
