Olympus 35RC - Project Deco

its olympus Optical Industries Company

microscopes used at an engineering company I work for sometimes, still use them, old as the hills they are..:)
 
I really like the the 'Tokiwa' logo, the first one, it has historical meaning re the Olympus founder, but I don't think it will go with the other fonts.
I also like the 1921 'OIC' which I think will suit better?

The camera is on the way, posted it this morning, 1st class signed for.
I'll send the tracking via 'message'.

The first corporate logo was "TOKIWA", not "OLYMPUS". "TOKIWA" was derived from Tokiwa Shokai, the company which the founder, Takeshi Yamash!ta, had worked for. Tokiwa Shokai held an equity stake in Takachiho Seisakusho and was responsible for marketing Takachiho products.

The logo reads "TOKIWA TOKYO." The "G" and "M" marks above are believed to be the initials of, Goro Matsukata, the president of Tokiwa Shokai.

The Olympus brand was introduced in February 1921.

This logo was used for microscopes and other products. Brochures and newspaper ads for cameras also sported this logo. The "OLYMPUS TOKYO" logo is still in use today.

There was a period in which OIC was used instead of TOKYO in the logo. OIC stood for Optical Industrial Company, which was a translation of Olympus' Japanese corporate name at that time. This logo was used for the GT-I and GT-II endoscopes, among others.

What about just incorporating the GM script somewhere as a nod to the heritage?
 
Hi Baz. Your 35RC arrived safely today so i'll keep this thread up to date with progress, starting with removing the top plate to measure up the film counter and figure out how to remove the hotshoe. I forgot to ask, do you want to use the flash PC Sync plug or are you happy for that to be removed as well?

Hmmm, don't think it will impact on the overall look/finish will it?
Just thinking I can put on a flash bracket via the tripod screw if I ever needed a flash, so the pc might come in handy.
Not bothered about the flash shoe so that can go def!
No worries Steve, what do you think? Either way I'm happy.
 
I'll leave it in place Baz, don't want to completely strip your camera of features you might use :0). If you'd rather keep the hotshoe as well it doesn't have to go.

Now I've got a good copy of the original film counter dial I've just put together a mock up of the finished disk.

I'm not 100% sure about the window surround so may use something a bit less chunky :0)
 
Does that fit flush or proud? Hard to tell.

At the moment the surround is just sat on top of the dial to get a feel for how large the window needs to be. When finished the surround will be part of the camera top plate with a glass dome in the centre to read the film counter. I used the only cup washer I had to test but I'm finding a smaller one to better fit on the top plate.
 
I'm also re-drawing the numbers for the film counter so they are rotated by 90 degrees and can be read from the bottom through the window. I haven't decided on a final font yet so if you've got an idea, let me know. I'm not an Art Deco expert so any suggestions appreciated.

The disk will be white when it's done and the original numbers won't be visible. I'm just using them as a guide for the replacement numbers so it all lines up.

Well that was a pita!

Still got a couple of alignment issues to sort but the bulk of the layout is sorted. The numbers get slightly closer as the roll goes on so took a bit of fiddling. I can now modify the font once that's decided.
