Olympics - SAM missiles on flats...

what I don't understand is that the govt are acting like this is a completely new threat to the UK. It was almost 11years ago when 9/11 happened and hasn't aircraft security been significantly improved since then. Is it really possible for a terrorist to gain access to the flightdeck given the changes made post 9/11? All this hoo ha about protecting the olympics is being over egged in my opinion. Thousands of planes pass over Great London on a daily basis. Taking out One Canada Sq, Tower 42, Houses of Parliament is likely to cause far greater damage to the UK than a stadium. Why all the fuss now?

A little thing called the Olympics and the IOC security requirements!

It's been happening for years and certainly prior to 11th Sept 2001.

You've missed my point. Is this even a real threat any longer?

Unless London is left unprotected at all other times, with the standards only being heightened for the Olympics.

Well it wouldn't have Been a target if the idiot hadn't have gone public. It shocks me in this day and age everyone thinks they can make a quick buck from a story instead of thinking of the bigger story and keeping quiet.

ROFL! Seriously? Jeebus

I had an Apache buzz my village yesterday morning.

I would have thought that in pyongyang a Mi24 Hind would be more usual comrade;)

TBH I don't think that the actual threat is an issue. It's more about PR and precautionary actions to counter a perceived threat to the public and, more importantly, foreign eyes.

And there you have it, "more importantly foreign eyes", to hell with the locals, typical of this country today. If the actual threat is not a issue why the need for so called precautionary actions

Yes, but it's a little disconcerting when decisions on public security are made at the 'poker table'.

I'd be more worried about a gas attack or biological warfare during the olympics, which would be much harder to detect.

(you can tell I work in Risk Management!) :cuckoo:

Do you know something about the official caterer's baked beans in advance, that the rest of us should be aware of? :D

No but the refuse holding area at the end of platform 17 at liverpool st is enough to make you spew your guts.

In all seriousness, I go past the olympic site twice a day on my way to and from work and it all looks pretty grotty to me. I will happily look past it as the focus of the event should be the competition and coming together of athletes from around the world. It still makes me feel a little embarrassed though.

Yes, which is why I said Apaches are rare.... usually the the Great Leader (tm) SAM system destroys all imperialists within seconds of them approaching the border ;-)

The hilarious thing is, that despite all of the good PR.... they've monumentally screwed up ALL of the PR around placing the missiles on a residential roof, from day one - they should surely at least have gone through the motions of a quasai-consultation process- and it's got worse and worse ever since!

Here's a great photo of a photocall with some rapier missiles in a park: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mikekingphoto/7139397733/

Strangely, no such thing was organised in Bow by the military...

As for the need for missiles - I'm not at all surprised that there are missiles provisions being made. Putting them on a residential building is quite a step though...

Opinions as to whether that was a great photocall differ somewhat according to the guys who were there! ;)

Somewhat along the lines of; Here's a shiny bit of metal for you to photography, now hurry up and wait!

you're misreading, I said that it was a cool photo -of- the photocall, not that the photocall subject matter was any good :P
