Olympic opening ceremony

I'm not sure the Queen looks grumpy/sour, to me she increasingly she has been looking ill or in pain ever since the Jubilee.

I noticed that too. She did not look like she was interested at all. When she was about to declare the Olympics open i thought she was going talk a bit more but she just said that one sentence and that's it. She didn't even cheer when team GB came into the stadium. Given her age i guess it is not easy especially after doing it for so long.

Other than that (and the military carrying the flag) i was quite impressed with the whole ceremony.

I am NOT disgusted that you are all in favour of spending 9 billion was it?
on something that will last 4 weeks (2 weeks for the main event)

tbh you couldnt float andy carroll with 27m let alone the world(?) economy.
As above I was referring to the 9 billion, not the 27 million

. Why was there a thread created for the people against the Olympics in the first place?
Because obviously there were going to be so many gripes about wasted
money etc etc etc.

Rather than have them spread around the different forums,
and different threads, I tried to keep them all in one place, "by and large" it seemed to work.

I don't know why we put ouselves down as much as we do.

Well Ced`s, it is almost as if it is an automatic thing for a lot of people to do in this day and age. The way I see it is that there are a lot that dont even have confidence in themselves for whatever reason. I will probably get hung for this, but photography is a typical example, so many with the attitude that will do, that`s good enough  Nobody expects everyone to be good at everything in life, but when it comes to having a go at doing something no matter how trivial it is, you have to give it your best, even if you do not succeed, at least you have tried. I do not know what has brought it about really  but it is almost as if some have a defeatist attitude before they even start.

London 1948 made a profit, so why not london 2012 too.

Plus there is money made in strange ways that would be difficult to be attribute to the games, who knows someone in New Zealand may have watched the ceremony, thought the Arctic Monkeys were great and goes out and buy the album, it's games generated income, but how could anyone put that down on a balance sheet

According to research carried out by the International Centre for Olympic Studies at the University of Western Ontario no host city has ever come out ahead, financially..,,

Well if it happens, can I come and watch? :D

Sure but dont get knocked over in the rush :D Ringside seats are slightly more expensive you understand

first half didnt like it. Thought it was poop. Second half doing great until hey jude but pulled it back with the big brass torch so all in all not bad at all

I've no interest in the Olympics.

I think we have been misled about what we will gain from it.

I was really annoyed to find out this morning that BBC1 is showing 15 hours of the Olympics every day of the games, while BBC4, which is mainly repeats, is untouched, but

I thought last night's opening ceremony was excellent.

Agree. Bloody disgrace - It is being held in England!!!

Coverage at the start looked naff - what is all that farming stuff about??? However, got much better as it went on and showed what a great show we can do and how great this country is. Rowan Atkinson was very funny.

French is the official language of the Olympic Games. As has already been explained in the thread.

While I enjoy the games and will be watching as much as I can, I understand what your saying Dave. I feel the same when the BBC show hours and hours of boring football at the expense of everything else even if the game over runs. They should consider their scheduling so that the games are shown but alternatives are available for non enthusiasts.

It was as good as you can expect of these things. Far too much back-slapping for my liking though.

BBC1 is aimed at the mass market. It is assumed that those people will want wall to wall olympics. Those of us not interested in sport have to make do with the other channels as usual.

I do wish the BBC would bring out a dedicated sports channel so it could all be stuck in one place out of the way. With everyone going digital there is no reason not to.

havent they set up some dedicated channels too? i do agree 15 hrs is way too much you still have to consider the non-sporting fans even in this day and age of digital tv and 50 channels.

I went to bed a bit after 10 but I have to grant you that point from what I saw up till then ... who lit the cauldron?

7 young athletes that were selected by the legends of british olympics like steve redgrave , daley thompson etc.

I'm not against the creation of a negative thread to keep things in one place at all I think it's a great idea. What I dislike is when it doesn't work. You'd never get the positive people going and posting in the negative thread but you do get the vice versa.

Not saying this is the positive thread. As I said earlier I didn't realise this thread was a seperte one. I guess it this discussion really should have been had in one of the original threads rather than an orphan thread. Probably would have solved a lot of the baiting and bickering.

Did anyone else catch the commentary when Rwanda came out? It went something like..

"not all about genocide"

Seemed a bit blunt with no real reason to bring it up, seeing as they didn't really make any similar remarks about other countries that haven't got the best history when it comes to human conflict.

Yeah your right i thought that too. Not realy sure why that was bought up tbh.

Why isn't it Greek?

Because the modern Olympic Games was the idea of a French man as far as I can remember. The Greeks are always the first team out in the parade as a mark of respect.

Thought it was very good and much better than I was expecting, slightly risque perhaps with the Dambusters march and then Enola Gay

Highlight for me apart from the cauldron was Beckham in the powerboat, engines churning over red, white and blue spray. Fireworks erupting from Tower Bridge and the young lady holding the torch with her hair swept back by the wind, all very Bond like.

Lowlight was McCartney, only heard a bit then switched off and went to bed, retirement long overdue, wish it had been about 1966

they did comment on conflict with regard to other countries eg Syria

I enjoyed the opening ceremony, thought it was great.

As an aside, and without wanting to steer the thread off-track, I had a brief (:exit: ) but very strange conversation with a bloke in the pub earlier. He was totally sold on the idea that the 2012 logo spelled "Zion" ("so why is the dot there then?!"), the Illuminati-woss-it's-name and all that jazz, and it's "all planned out" and all manner of stuff. I was speechless. Has anyone else had the pleasure of meeting such a plum or should I change pubs? :D WTF is going on?

I've heard that "theory" before, I seem to remember something similar with regards to the Beijing Olympic logo and the London mascots are alleged to be a nod to the illuminati too :cuckoo:

Yea, I've come across a few similar bizarre theories on the web, as I'm sure many others have too, and I know the web is an ideal breeding ground for such groups but I've never met anyone in the flesh who is so messed up on such nonsense - he was completely hatstand, I dread to think how it affects his day-to-day life.

@H20 :lol:

All good until Macca, at which point switched off

Me too!

I thought the ceremony was amazing.

BUT, why the Arctic Monkeys? Nothing to do with the fact that they were 5h1te, just wondering why them?
Surely there are other bands who should have been there, rather than them

Why not, I didn't think they were $¥|+€ Maybe not to everyone's taste

McCartney however, Jesus he murdered Hey Jude, I know the Beatles are known worldwide but surely they checked he could still sing

A couple of weeks ago they pulled the plug on a Springsteen/McCartney gig because it over ran, after hearing that I think they did them a favour

That were excellent, the cover of come together was brilliant.

Two McCartney's involved, and two pieces of rubbish put out.

Stella cocks-up the Team GB Strip and dad can't sing anymore

So that's two Big Mac's...... maybe it had something to do with the sponsors? :(

as i said in the other thread, stella didnt design the opening ceremony outfits, they were designed and supplied by NEXT. stella designed the outfits worn during the games themselves, which i think are quite nice although fairly understated

I love them but AT was off-key (flat) for the whole of Come Together.

I loved the theatricals of the ceremony, even though I was aware that to people who know very little about the UK will probably be thinking we're all blacked-up people who live underground, wear stovepipe hats and nurses put people to bed before weird goblins are heralded in by JK Rowling

Overall, it was pretty illustrative of a nation that has proud and varied heritage, a good sense of humour and who often make tiny cock-ups that make us what we are.

Mind you, when team GB came out I though they'd be raiding the clearance rack down at TK Maxx!!!! GOLD and white!!!!!....

To keep the East london bit going it should have been Iron Maiden and yes I know Mr Dickinson isn't a local.

From a personal pont of view I was less than impressed with the rendition of "Bubbles"

I'd have liked to have seen UFO (NE London) playing Light's Out (In London) would have been a good choice purely on title alone although I don't think a song about London Riots would have been quite fitting somehow.

Or maybe "Doctor, Doctor" with all those hospital beds, coincidentally Iron Maiden do a good version of that too
