Do me a favour!
They went they saw they conquered, well mostly OK guys, good job
They got their medals for the prospective placings, that is what they were due.

They were interviewing some runner or other on the radio,
Q. are you doing this for your country or yourself?
A. Myself obviously! (although we are all part of a team)

Yeah sounds like it!

We all excel "at work" at some point, and a pat on the back from the boss, or a little extra bonus is most welcome,
But that's it!

The article is wrong about one thing.
It says that every member of the cycling squad won a medal.
They didn't.
Every member of the track cycling squad did.

Honours? Couldn't give a monkey's. :-)

I'd far rather honour the chaps & chapesses who represented the UK in Rio then the more normal crew of PM's mates who get honoured.

They've done rather well representing us and that should be celebrated. Not embarrassed us by acting like spoilled brats either.

I actually think it's a bit sad and speaks volumes that the uk press would degenerate someone doing rather well for us. It's a bit of a sad reflection

makes a mockery of what the honours system is about.
Exactly my feelings too.

fair enough, they did well, they have been all over the news, newspapers, and god knows what else media.
They have their fame and recognition,
but this?
Mo Farah, who already has a CBE, has been tipped for a knighthood and star cycling couple Jason Kenny and Laura Trott, as well as tennis star Andy Murray, are expected to see their OBEs upgraded to at least CBEs if not knighthoods and damehoods.

As @POAH said (above)

I'd far rather they had them then Samantha Cameron's wallpaper designer ( or whoever it was) or people like Phil Green.

I don't think it makes a mockery at all. It seems exactly what the honours should be for.

This is what the honours are allegedly awarded for https://www.gov.uk/honours/types-of-honours-and-awards

Smoke and mirrors, to keep the peasants from revolting. Keep the collective mind off the dark days ahead and the misdeeds of the recent past.

Andy Murray makes millions from competitions and endorsments, he plays tennis for himself for fun and to make money - explain why getting honoured for playing a sport is what the honours system is about. Same goes for acting etc. The only thing Andy Murray contributes to is tax to the goverment and profit to himself and his sponsers (plus the people that organise the comps he plays in)

So nominate some "worthy" people.
Make a good case and they may get honoured too.

I linked to the requirements for each honouring my previous post. Maybe you'd explain how winning an olympic gold doesn't fit this and what sort of activities one would do instead to gain it? Who do you think we should celebrate?

This is awarded for having a major contribution in any activity, usually at national level. Other people working in the nominee’s area will see their contribution as inspirational and significant, requiring commitment over a long period of time.

why does being good at sport deserve to be honoured by the queen? why are other sports where the brits are really good at e.g. Rachel Atherton, DH mountain biker, not get honoured? its a total crock of populas pish

IMO this is more about politicians ingratiating themselves with the great British public and wanting to appear 'cool'

Having said that I would much rather every single member who won a medal (any colour) receive recognition than almost everyone on David Cameron' resignation honours list.

But they have already been "recognised" adored had people fawning over them, and come away with a medal, in recognition for their deeds.
TBH titles don't impress me, but it seems they are being doubly / trebly rewarded for something they wanted to do in the first place.
They should be "honoured", that they were picked to represent their country, in the first place.
And greatful for the amount of money they will all make off the back of this, with "endorsements" "books" "shampoo ads" and God knows what else.

There is that of course ;)

Most of them genuinely are. And work for it.

The majority will never make money on the back of it either

I bet those that get knighted do ;)
What better than to have a knight or a knightess ( :D ) endorsing your shampoo?

Nominate her then. Instead of growing chips out of your shoulders try doing something :)

They weren't picked, they had to qualify.

Well I am all for them being honoured. They've done a fantastic job, exceeded expectations, most of them don't make anywhere near the kind of money those winching footballers make and are 100x the sports people. And despite all the nasty Tory cuts they performed better then ever before. Damn right they are honoured.

It's down to the change of season, I reckon.

The starlings are gathering, the pike are stirring, the bees are bumbling.

It's all a bit here and there.

bloody brilliant, lets remember pretty much all the athletes are amatuers and working hard for years for these results, medals and a trip to the palace.
sounds fantastic :-)

bravo chaps and chapesses

Loving the plane dressed up as well. Nice touch.

She's having them over for a reception, the rest is media speculation.
'Pop over luv, lets have a discussion about your success (or not) over a cuppa and cake'

I'd like the Queen to do that.

You can see it now, can't you?..Lizzie pouring tea from a corgi shaped teapot, and passing round the custard creams. :-)

I was more thinking: Party and Orgy - you know all those fit young bodies in one place. Got to be a hell of a party as reported from RIO ;)

Sounds more like a "do" for Phil, the Greek!

They weren't picked, they had to qualify.
But they were picked for the "qualifiers" or from the qualifiers.
As Eric bristow once said, there are people out there, playing pub league, that are equal, if not better than me,
put them in front of a camera and they go to pieces.

And despite all the nasty Tory cuts
I didn't realise that so much money from the national lottery was injected into this, I've stopped buying tickets until they find a worthy cause to spend it on :p

lets remember pretty much all the athletes are amateurs
That was the idea behind it, yes, but not so much these days, there are plenty of professionals competing.

They still have to qualify though, and some qualified right from club level, and over years of training, ALL have risen from that level, even those in sport seen as elitist.
If a person goes to pieces in front of a TV camera, or under the pressure of competition, then that is no one's fault but their own and the people who can compete to a high level under pressure go through.

and the people who can compete to a high level under pressure go through.
That was a side point that I was getting at, they aren't necessarily the best of the best.

Oh please - one has staff don't you know...

One would expect sandwiches, cakes and scones. She did mentioned she liked rich tea biscuits last time I was there when we discussed biscuits. Sandwiches were ham and english mustard, cucumber and smoked salmon, egg mayonnaise.

folk on here just get miserable as no toggers get on the list

I'd not thought about it, TBH, but seeing you mentioned it, are there any that deserve it then? I'm not sure that there are.
Maybe a couple of the ones that put their life on the line to bring us the "war atrocities" images, but then again maybe not.

But to be honoured several times for something they wanted to do, that when all is said and done, is a massive PR job, well ...
