Friend had a Hilux Surf, one of the biggest piles of junk ever.
From electrical to the sills holding water to head gaskets regularly blowing and it was a ridiculously low miler.
The mitsubishi recommendation is a pretty good one but be aware 1998 to about,,, 2005 ish tended to have problems with the rear Diff overheating at mild motorway speeds (circa 65) and it jumps into limp home mode! not fun when you have a wagon chasing up your backside with your foot flat down.

Check that the wiring loom for the injectors has been changed, oil seeps down it and fills the ecu, which will start with a missfire then gradually get worse untill it stops. You can buy them on e-bay for under £30 and they arnt that hard to fit if you no your way around an engine bay.
Wheel brearings, abs faults and the auto,s do suffer from problems with the x-y switch, expensive to put right, i would recomend you have the egr system blanked off and think about a remap, it will give you more power, torque AND improve your mpg, and it will make it much nicer to drive,

I would agree with the suggestion of the Nissan Pathfinder. Mine is 05, 86000 miles and been very reliable ( yes, I know what will happen as soon as I post this ) so far. I hope to keep it to 200,000. Prior to that I had the Nissan Xtrail which was just as good. My Freelander was a pile of poo, from new ! But to be fair, both my Discos were problem free.

It's away getting a couple of a couple of small things seen to and the guy is giving me a 6 month warranty. I'll admit I'm going into it with fingers crossed but hey - you only live once.:nuts:

Get winter tyres, it'll save you money and you'll embarrass all the foolish folk who go out buying 4x4s because of a bit of snow.

Certainly getting them on the people carrier.
Local mechanic can store and swap as required which is handy.
The wife and I (without explaining) 'both' need a vehicle that will take:
1) All 4 kids plus a parent
or
2) Some of the kids plus up to 3 dogs
I'm happy with 7 seat C4 Grand Picasso (winter tyre option) plus 7 seat Disco.
