Old Tamron Lenses on a new DSLR

I have 2 old Tamron lenses from an old Canon SLR. Having been told that an adaptor to make them fit my current Sony body isn't an option, I'm looking at buying a Canon 40D or 50D for them.

Does anyone know if they will work on the new Canon body?

The lenses are:
1x Tamron 1860, 100-300mm, 1:5-6.3, 55mm diameter
1x Tamron 1770, 28-80mm, 1:3.5-5.6, 58mm diameter

I believe that the sensors might be different sizes, so the zoom lengths will be a bit different, but other than that will these lenses work on either the 40D or 50D? I am going to try and borrow my friends Canon body (20D I think) to check, but was hoping someone on here might be able to help out?

I would just get rid of them, but since I need to upgrade my current body anyway, and these seem like a good pair of starting lenses for me, I thought I'd see if switching to Canon might be viable.

Cheers,
Rob

If the old canon slr was an EOS then they will fit, but when fitted to a newer DSLR body they may cause errors (I think indicated by an ERR99 message on the LCD display.) This is something to do with the old chip inside the lens not being compatible with the newer bodies. You can either have them re chipped (it doesn't cost a lot but still may not be economically viable) or just shoot in full manual and make sure you don't try to use an aperture they don't offer, the camera will let you set the aperture to a wider setting than the lens offers. At least that's what I have with two old Sigma EOS lenses.

If they are the previous (to EOS) Canon mount then no they will not fit, without an adaptor.

Excellent, thank you very much! The SLR is an EOS model, so sounds like it might work then, just need to see if they produce the error messages and then maybe get them re-chipped. Now I just have to decide whether to stay with my Sony kit, or move to Canon...
