Spotted the discussion on the insurance thread about classic cars being quite resonable to insure. Thought about my dream car as a teen and decided I want one of these now... (I had the 4 door one years ago but always fancied the 3 door). Early mid-life crisis? :lol: :love:

mk1 sierra is exactly what the OH is looking at next when our escort comes off the road for a refurb! some gorgeous ones at ford fair the weekend.
 
I have always loved my classic "fast" fords, had a bright yellow mkII escort with the "forrest arch kit" a couple of rs turbos (one for the track too) and a couple of cosworths but never got my hands on a 3 door. I remember about 10 years ago getting offered my mates rs500 and almost buying it. I really wish I did now, they fetch a fortune second hand these days!
 
Our current car, only 1.1 base model as we need the economy but pretty rare (only 1 of 9 base models left on the road) will be off the road hopefully next year (if we can get a garage) for a full back to bare metal restore, and will then only come out for shows etc.

Nice Rover. We had one of those in the eighties, but I wasn't so keen then, as my dad had sold his Corvette to buy it :'(
 
I'm obviously old :(. Ford Sierra and a front wheel drive Escort are old school? :eek:

Those Rovers are like battleships - they're huge! My Dad had one of the first ones, and I ended up with one as well in the early 90s. They're okay to drive, they have plenty of room, the dashboard goes on for miles... but don't expect too much by way of reliability...

How many people can say they buy a classic car expecting reliability.
To me that's the whole point of classic car ownership, when things go wrong it's an excuse to get your hands dirty and fix it! :lol:

But these ones abused the privilege! They came from BL's bad ole days! :lol:

They were brilliant inside though, when everything worked! But I'm with you - I still have a soft spot for them...

If I was going to go for a classic Rover nowadays, it'd be a 3.5l P6...

Mmmm P6, another nice car!
Would have that or the SD1 but view would have to be in V8 format.
 
My first motor was a 2.0l P6 from 1973... I dread to think how much the 3.5 would cost to run these days though...
 
A small fortune, worth it for the grin factor when you squeeze the loud peddle - can't beat the sound of a Burbbling V8 on carbs or twin plenums
 
The DB5 or a DB6 were always my dream cars, and still are. Unfortunately I was living abroad when they were remotely affordable, so that's another dream that probably isn't going to come true.

I had a 1974 one, auto gearbox, white with a tobacco vinyl roof. A great car to look at and it sounded beeeeyootiful, but I only got 12mpg round town...ouch.
 
I quite like my old morgans i have 3 two are being rebuilt this is the old Girl im using at the moment for Sunday afternoon driving

This is my old Italian Lady, had her for a while now and loved every minute of driving her, never has she let me down, to dispel that myth. Up for sale and pretty much sold..........:'(

\Ground clearance is too little mate, but I can usually catch stuff in it..........:D
 
If only Triumph could have got the 3.5 rover in that lovely car..........:(

Had one a while back, great too drive, bloody awful engine.

There are a lot out there with that conversion now inc. the 3.9L
No pictures but my 1st "classic" was a "long door" TR2
Well actually 50 quids worth of "run around" at the time (early 70's) I hate to think what that is worth now.

And now I want one. You could set up home in it's very spacious back end!
 
I don't know what triumph were thinking when they decided to stick 2 x 1500cc dolomite engines together to get their 3L V8.
They could have easily sourced their engines from Rover.

Still thankfully crap engine or not there is a huge appeal for the stags still.

I think that a lot of internal politics prevented that from happening,IIRC.

Stags without the original engine used to be worth a lot less than one with, but they were a heck of a lot better with that Rover 3.5 in. You either had to drop the subframe or bulge the bonnet so that the SU carbs did not foul.

Remember those. Reminds me of the Mk2 escort estate my dad had in red. Massive in the back!

they're sierra pepperpot alloys. Got the xr3 cloverleaf alloys to go on it once they're refurbished. Already got the other xr3 cosmetic bits on it, wheels is all thats left. It'll be a xr3 replica for a while, then once we've got a garage its coming off the road and being stripped back to a bare shell for a full restore, and maybe something a bit out of the ordinary engine wise, will be a show only car then, we'll have a sierra as everyday car, suitable to tow a trailer for the escort :D thats the plan anyway....

I had a 190 2.5 diesel, can`t argue with your comments. Superb bits of kit.
