Yes
have looked at Ken Rockwell (c) Compatibility Chart...."here"

I have used my Nikkor 50mm f2 Ai on my D5000 - looks SHARP!

MF with confirmation green viewfinder light = OK
set aperture using Weston meter - then adjust if necessary

just fancied buying/trying a 24mm or 28mm.....

can I use the non-Ai [or pre-Ai] versions exactly the same ?... think so.. just need confirmation

thanks..............

With the D40/X/60 you can, not so sure about D3000/5000, however, there are plenty of cheap 24mm and 28mm ai/s lenses around, I recently got a 24mm Ais for about £100, worth it in my eyes, plus then theres definately not issue when upgrading the body as non ai lenses will damage D90 and above.

D5000 is same F mount as D40
sorry - on a pension - if I had £100 I would go for a 35mm AF-S @ £140 here
no plans ever to upgrade from D5000 [ i know i will regret that statement...:D

off to eBay then -

all nikons from 1959 are f mount ,,but they cant all take pre ai lenses ,
