Old Lenses For Sony E Mount

Hi Folks,

Since quitting photography I'm coming back to it but with a majorly scaled down kit in terms of tech specs and physical items.

I've just bought an A6000 with 16-50mm lens and was wondering some good lenses to put on it? Quite fancying old adapted lenses based on cost in comparison to Sony lenses. I've got a Canon 50mm 1.8 FD lens as I've just got a Canon AE1P as well which will be adapted.

Ideally I'm looking for a wide angle at about 21mm or thereabouts when taking into consideration the crop factor.

Also looking for something a tad longer at about 70-100mm when crops taken into account as well (the 50mm will work out on the lower end of that range nicely).

Kris, you will struggle to get something decent at the wide end, as most vintage stuff was full frame there aren't really any 14-15mm vintage lenses around and most that are (Leica Fit Mainly) aren't great on the Sony bodies - would a Samyang 12mm or 14mm suit? Not vintage but manual focus and both are very good.
 
Yeah didnt find much on the wide end except for some canon ones which were 14mm and 17mm which would fit around that range. Unsure of the quality.

Happy for modern lenses too but was hoping to use them in the AE1 too. If I cant get anything wider then probably go for the Samyang. Cheer Chris

No worries Kris - widest FD I used was the 20mm which was pretty good - the Phillip Reeve blog is the best source of info on manual glass on the Sony Cameras (https://phillipreeve.net/blog/)

I think the Tokina 17mm AT-X is meant to be good. Unfortunately they also seem to sell for good prices, and aren't available in FD mount that I can tell.
 
I have a Tokina 17mm in Minolta mount, also a 19mm Vivitar.

I think on APS-C I'd stick to a kit lens for the wider shots as older FF wide lenses tend to be rare and expensive and also maybe on the large side too. For cheaper old manual lens fun I think that 28mm f2.8 and 50mm lenses make the most sense and thankfully these are plentiful and cheaper. 135mm f3.5's are relatively plentiful and cheap too.

An A7 makes much more sense for older manual lenses IMO.

There is a samyang 21mm f1.4 APS-C lens which is manual focus and excellent.
I used oly om 21mm f3.5 on my A7 and that was quite good too.
You could also buy native Sony 20mm/2.8 pancake or FE28 with wide angle adapter which gives 21mm/2.8.

There are plenty option unlike what people have said above. Though it would make more sense to get an A7 for adapted lenses which sells rather cheaply these days especially with cash back.

Well seeing that you are trying to cutdown on bulk it doesn't make much sense to buy a small body and then stick a massive FF DSLR UWA lens on it like the samyang 14mm/2.8. UWA is one place where it really makes sense to buy a mirrorless lens since these can be small and compact. The samyang 12mm f2, laowa 9mm f2.8 and samyang 8mm f2.8 fisheye are rather compact. The sony 10-18mm f4 is compact too and weighs only 225g!!
So there is a lot of bulk saving to be made by buying a mirrorless lens in these focal lengths.

TBH I never really thought about adapting any lenses until I got the A6000 and started looking at other lenses. I mean I'll buy the Sony lenses etc but the possibility of using FD lenses on both cameras as well as the fact they'll be much cheaper is enough to lure anyone I'd imagine. I didn't go for the A7 as it was more expensive as well as the fact I'd have to pay more for another lens when I already get one with the A6000 granted it's a kit lens. I'm not a pixel peeper etc, just wanted something digital to accompany the film camera. Thanks for the ideas folks :)
