Hi bees and welcome to TP.

The Canon lens will definitely work. Every lens Canon have made since about 1987 will work with a 40D. (1999 isn't that old! I have a 200mm f/1.8 that was made in about 1989 and it stll works fine.)

The Sigma lens should work. It's conceivable that Canon might have made some minor changes to their system in the last few years which Sigma couldn't have known about - you occasionally hear of Sigma and other lenses having to be "re-chipped" to work with some of the newest cameras. But in this case I think that's pretty unlikely. Anyway it will definitely fit on the camera, and you certainly can't do any harm by trying.

Come back and let us know how it turns out!

I know when my Dad bought his first DSLR, a 300D, a few years back he had to return his Sigma 70-300 to Sigma to be changed for one that had the appropriate firmware to make the AF work on the digital series so you may fall foul of that but easiest way to find out is to give it a whizz.
