As always apologies if this has already been asked :bonk:

I have a mate who will have a an Iphone that is out of contract and he is giving it to me.

Does anyone know if I can get from 02, Orange or Vodaphone a SIM only deal that I can use in that phone?

Or any other way I can use it as cheaply as possible - and ideally port across my current mobile number ( I am coming to the end of a "3" contract on pay monthly)

Cheers

John

Get it unlocked from o2 firstly.

Then you can either go Orange or O2.

I'm on simplicity O2. £20 300 mins 300 txt unlimited internet.

I'm pretty sure you can. Take a look at the options available on the O2 web site. Whatever you end up with will no doubt be better value than '3'.

You do know that it costs more to call a '3' mobile number than any other mobile. Even after you port the number to another carrier. Your number will always be considered a '3' number as far as other carriers are concerned.

Switching to a new number isn't that much of a hardship is it

Wrong... A number is not intrinsically linked to a provider. Once you port your number over to another provider, it takes on the tariff assocaited with the contract you sign on with that provider. It will have no link to "3" at all once ported.

That's complete rubbish, calls to mobile numbers are charged at one rate, irrespective of the network the reciever is on.

if you go with o2 then you will need to change the settings for texts etc

there is a section on this at the o2 website under help

I recently got an unlocked one, put my Virgin pay as you go it, pay £18 for 200 mins, unlimited text (well 3,000) and 1.gb data/web.

Of course it takes on the tariff of the new provider. I never said that it didn't.

No, it's you that is talking garbage. Not ALL providers charge a single rate for calling ALL mobiles. My business line provider specifically EXCLUDES '3' from their tariff booklet section on calling mobiles from a landline. I have their booklet in front of me. Calls to '3' mobiles are at a higher rate.

It doesn't need to be an iPhone tariff, once it's factory unlocked (which 02 will do) you can use any 3G sim, on any contract.

Of course they are most of the time ... The screen is only 480x320 pixels.

Good enough for nearly all that I need to see.

oh right

nah it's not the screen mate. i've used the iphone on orange and the pics are clear. for sites like flickr, facebook etc.
even my mobile broadband is with o2 and it's the same issue. other networks no problems.

I'm saying that's wrong... If you shift your number to Vodafone from 3 for example, it will be a Vodafone number as far as any other provider (landline or mobile) is concerned. It will not hold some sort of 3 flag forevermore.

Then I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
