Off on a bit of a tangent to the recent thread relating to a student's planned dissertation. How many of you have old family photos with people you can't identify in them because someone in the past never got around to writing names on the back? I've got a large collection stretching back to the early 1900s and I get awful frustrated looking at many of them because they've got faces in them and I feel I should know who they are but I don't. I do wish grandparents, aunts & uncles, and my parents had taken the time to write on the back when they took them.

I certainly have. I've been intending for years to scan fronts (and backs where appropriate) and circulate among the family. The problem is that my mother was the second last of a large family, and I was born when she was 37; as a result my youngest cousin is probably about 10 years older than I am (and to save anyone looking it up, I'll be 66 in a couple of weeks time). So, there won't be many people to supply names. Sue's albums are even more problematic.

I've got loads, that despite asking everyone I can in my family, can not be identified. This is even more likely to happen in the future too, as it's no easier to rename a file, or append metadata than it is to pick up a pen. In fact, for appending metadata.. it's much harder for most people.

Yes, I have a few, although luckily the majority are named thanks to my father & mother.
I think the problem will get worse though, as many today are taken with phones/i-pads etc and not printed to put in albums & probably not named/titled.

I have several hundred scans of old pics of family members going back to about 1900ish.
My late father collected them and gathered names on his travels to collate our family tree. So, pretty much every one in the pics has a name to them, and a family history.
My eldest sister is the custodian and has digitised all the info and pics.

It's the kind of thing that is looked at every generation, and then forgotten, but at least it is there.
