K, i took delivery of my new 7d today, i was very excited, however, after an evening out, my 50d and my 70-200 2.8 sigma mk2 seems to work better than the 50d....... Am i missing a trick here?

Personally I don't really expect mega improvements in image quality when I buy new stuff, it just doesn't seem to work like that these days.

Isn't one of the big selling points of the 7D its fancy focus system? Maybe you will see an improvement in this area rather than IQ as such????

Yeah i ment 7d *cuckoo*

focus system is nice and smooth but the focus and sharpness seems to be better on the 50d than on the 7d and to be honest im a little disapointed.....

Gregg - putting the auto focus to one side what did you expect in terms of IQ from the 7D compared to the 50D ?

You say sharpness seems better on the 50D - Is this just down to the fact that you get better shots with the body you're used to - or have you done some tests between the two ?

Im doing tests tommorow, the focus system seems to be pinsharp on the 50d but not quite so on the 7d, the spot on ten7d viewfiders is bigger than that of the 50d i doubt that has anythink to do with it though but it might......

Gregg - I'll keep an eye on your thread then. I'm just interested as I was looking to replace my 40D for a higher res body as I'd like to crop a little more for birds. the 50D would tick that box however the better AF capabilities of the 7D 'should' allow me to flog to 1D2 too.

Both camera's have micro focus adjustment, its my bet that your 50D is spot on for the sigma but the 7D needs tweaking.

My biggest regret was selling my 50d. I upgraded to the 7d expecting incredible improvements but was fairly disappointed. That said, give it a chance; it takes a while to get used to the focusing system. I now use a 1d mark iii and still miss my 50d. I think a lot of the time it is down to user error (not that I'm suggesting this in your case). Get used to the camera and know it inside out. If all else fails do what I did and drop it and see if that makes it better! One thing I would say, the 7d is great for wildlife(birds) the ability to crop and maintain sharpness is pretty darn good.

Im going to look into this one........ Seems logical but also seems not very staright forward......?

I went from a 40D to a 7D a couple of years ago, and found initially that my keeper rate went way down..... However the ones I kept were far better in terms of detail (to my mind IQ) than I could have obtained with the 40D. It certainly took me a while to get to terms with the 7D but when I did I was more than happy with the switch.

If you shoot in raw, then this is easy to fix.
For the rest, just keep at it and experiment with it.
For example, I found I have to bump the exposure +1 or +2 as a matter of course over my 40D, just play, play, play until you get the settings that work for you.
Also bear in mind that the 7D will show any shortcomings in your lens collection....

Happy snapping!

I'm currently playing with my 7d and lenses and quite liking the nifty 250 as is the 7d
was quite shocked that this cheapo lens worked so well on the 7d
I await to be shot down in flames

Thing is the 55-250 IS is actually pretty good optically , its 'cheap' through being built down to a price in the general build quality and materials, but canon havent compromised on the glass (just like the 50 f1.8)

So it will take great pictures but not last as long as its more expensive brethren

I even took some night time shots with it and didn't expect it to do any good I was pleasantly surprised
will post a couple up later
what a lens for 120 ish quid

Yep, the 55-250 is a great little lens, I loved mine and if I didn't need an f/2.8 tele I would still be using it! Very sharp at all apertures and focal ranges, and it pretty light to boot. It's a gem.
