I went looking in the tutorial section for a tutorial that i'm sure we used to have on the site to do with sharpening parts of an image. I think the example was a squirrel pic that was taken at Formby and it showed how you could sharpen the eye and other features of the animal by using masks.

But try as i have i can;t find it? I keep coming back to a tutorial on changing the colour of an owls eye, and wondering if its that which I have seen.

Anyone else remember it being on the site - might be 6 months ago or so... ?

Thanks - Allan

If it's the one I'm thinking of it was one of Bod's (Marcel's) and I seem to think it was a grey squirrel in his local park. I could be wrong. I'm not sure it was ever in Tutorials, but I think it was before the *ahem*incept of talkphotography so it could be down to hiccups around that time if it's gone. I'm sure Bod will have it backed up in a cubby hole somewhere though. :D

Ah... that one! :D
To sharpen an eye or any part of an image is pretty simple.

Draw a freehand mask reasonably accurately around the eye, then feather it by a few pixels so you don't get an obvious edge where your new sharpening ends. Apply USM to the eye in increments till happy with the result. Remove the mask and save the image.

While you're at it just have a play and see how many filters and settings you can use just within that mask...pretty well all of them you'll find. You can't reduce just within the mask to Greyscale, but you can desaturate which has the same effect.;)
