Ive just noticed that in a lot of the ads in the classifieds, if there are males involved trading, they refer to each other as 'mate'. This doesn't seem to occur quite so often in other sections so it must be something to do with the buying/selling routine!

Anyone else noticed? Mildy amusing I thought. ;)

I try not to get too friendly on here as I am usualy naked when I post so it doesn't seem right..

It doesn't offend me at all. Unlike the puke inducing "nifty-fifty" and "tog" and "lens".
 
Oh God, that's one of my pet hates, this "mate" thing. I get private messages by complete strangers on a certain social internet web site which ends off with the "m" word every time.
I've never met him, don't know him and nor am I likely to ever meet him - I just don't get this "mate" thing. If anything, it does come across as being "pushy".

The other thing that sets my teeth on edge is "hun". Aaaaaaargh.

My guessing is by being friendly / matey, hoping to drive the price down a bit?
 
I think its just the way the male mind works. Next time you're in a position to be haggling for something see if you find yourself using "mate" when you never normally use it at all!
 
Well me old treacle, I don't have an issue with it ’mate’ in general,the only tone it does wind me up odds on the aggressive situations and when you are making a collar and they call you mate.
 
Haha just been working on a building sites, mate is every other words.
Bud is a big one too.
 
Which reminds me. I cringed when I saw in an email received a month ago, from someone I thought I knew quite well, the use of the word 'chap' :puke:
