Quick question. I'm using ilford ilfotec lc29 and I have a roll of adox silvermax 100 but on the massive dev chart there isn't a match for those two, any thoughts chaps?

Don't forget the LC29 isn't a one shot developer .....bottle up your mixed solution and use it again

Sorry can't offer help for the adox silvermax though Nick has come up trumps by the look of it
 
Just to add, over time, the LC29 concentrate turns like a strong tea colour once opened....still works ok though.

I keep air in the concentrate bottle to a mnimum by displacing the liquid using marbles ( the ones kids play with so search your childrens/ grandchilds toybox:D)
 
The link seems to indicate 3 min 30 sec devving time, does that seem a little short?
 
Ilfords data sheet recommends 3.30 for tmax 100 @ 1+9 so it's probably correct. However, having such a short development time means that the accuracy of your timing is crucial and some would recommend that you use a greater dilution to extend the development time. The tmax100 time at 1+19 is 7.30 and at 1+29 is 11mins (all at 20c) I'd use one of those dilutions myself.

That's with a 1:9 solution is it not??

I'd go for the 1:29 solution and take 10 mins over it ......as David says the timing has to more crutial with the shorter times so chill out and go slow
 
Thanks guys but I've decided not to do it as I haven't got the first idea what I'm doing.....I shall leave it until I have someone with me that knows what to do.
Annoyingly I have had a couple of goes at this in the darkroom at Manchester university with Rob Hooley and if I'd done it sooner it would still be fresh in the mind but I find it almost impossible to do it from reading I need to be shown.
Also I'm a bit stressy at the moment and if I b#lls it up I shall just get angry and even more stressed.
 
What a shame ..if I was near, I'd drop and and sort it with you.

You do best to back off and wait until the time is right for you.

I'm sure it won't be long before someone gets around to helping and besides, you are obviously itching to "have a go"

I recall my first time at deving ...it was a little nerve wracking building upto it yet once done it was like " well that was a piece of cake, give me another film to do" attitude! lol

Like most things, first time is the most difficult to overcome ....though I don't seem to recall that I had the same issue with the ladies :wideyed::D:D
 
It's a shame you're not going to have a go Andy but agree you do need to be stress free if poss and until you know what you're doing you really don't want to be dev'ing in a hurry.

I'n the meantime while you're waiting, do some practising loading the spiral with a roll of dead film or Agfa Vista, just practice while you're watching telly, Start by actually looking at what you're doing then inside a changing bag or with you're eyes closed. At least then when you come to do it for real that bit will be easy.

Also, when you do have a go get all your chemicals mixed up in jugs ready to go, write on the jugs so it's easy to grab the right one and remember that although it's preferable to be spot on with your temperatures if the chems are the right temp at the start they don't need to sit in a water bath unless you're dev'ing outside in the garage in the middle of winter.
 
The first film I developed was a total failure due to my loading the film onto the spiral incorrectly. Have fun...

Cheers Rob, I think I've got it now (watched a couple of vids) and I'm feeling a bit less stressed as well. I'll probably have a go tomorrow. (y)
 
I remember developing my first film. Read everything several times, watched a number of videos, checked every step before during and after to make sure I hadn't missed anything and the film turned out fine.

The second film I developed was rather muddy and quite disappointing because by that point I was an expert, obviously :rolleyes:


Good luck with it, Andy, take your time and try not to swear too much when you're putting the film on the reel ;)

I devved my first one under supervision at uni. Made it easy. I'd just send it to ilford and dunk another roll with non important practice shots. Then tell everyone the ilford devved roll is your handiwork ;)

The hardest bit is loading the spiral. Rest is straightforward. It is basically following a recipe.
 
TRouble is I don't know the recipe......:eek:
 
I followed the video done by Donut.... made sure no one was around to get in the way...and... as Suz says, loading the reel in the changing bag was probably the hardest part.....

A modern chap such as yourself surely has an iPhone so I can heartily recommend the Massive Dev Chart app, not only does it give you the timings and a built in timer but it will work out the ratios for you and the resulting measurements.

I'll second what Nick says.... I didn't have the app for my first devving, but it sure does make things easier especially for timings....and it can be customised as well if you do E6, C41 etc...
 
I do have the MDC but it doesn't have the 'recipe' forSilvermax and LC29, extremely good app though.
 
I did my first fillum in 1951 -- I had used my Mum's Kodak Brownie Hawkeye Box camera and some ex-RAF WWII 'Orthochromatic' film from a wonderful 'Emporium' in Leytonstone called 'Marston & Heards' where the ancient gent took down boxes and blew off the dust -- it was 6d a roll in Old Money which left me with 2 shillings from my weekly pocket money .. I was not scared at all to process -- I 'blacked out' the bathroom with an old grey blanket and wrapped some Red paper round the 40 watt bulb as I was told 'Orthochromatic Films' were not sensitive to RED -- then I diluted some home-made developer ( done in the school Chemistry Lab) and some Hypo Crystals for Fixer and few drops of my Mum's Vinegar in water for 'Stop Bath' then I 'See-Sawed' the film through while my dad was desperately waiting at bathroom door for a pee having just come home from Liverpool Street Station -- I though the greyish images i produced were the 'Bees-Knees' !! Results improved drastically when I saved up 27/6d for an 'Austrian' made Developing tank as if course the 'RED' paper was NOT really good !
