I assume this is within the rules of the forum?:)

Anyone know of any oil industry forums?

I'm looking for a job in the oil industry but other than oilcareers.com (whos forums isn't open) I can't find any other forums like it.

Also any Geology job/exploration forums (or oil/exploration/geology recruitment sites) would be appreciated too.:)

Thanks

Not sure if it's changed much since I was in the oil industry but I got my job with Conoco through a speculative letter to their HR dept and my job with Castrol came via a recruitment agency.

Without any specialist petro-chemical avenues for companies to recruit through (mags or forums), agencies tend to be their quickest and most productive way of finding suitable candidates.

There's not many companies with upstream operations in the UK so unless you've tried it already Amp, I'd be very tempted to contact them directly and have a chat.

ROV world forum, is the only one that springs to mind, though I haven't looked on there for ages.

The majority of UK companies are based in Aberdeen, with others being in Morecamb and Great Yarmouth. Google, or use yell.com to search "offshore Aberdeen" for addresses and then contact the HR or recruitment departments with a CV and covering letter.

Be prepared to have a UKOA approved medical and OPITO approved offshore survival course.

Thanks for the replies. :) So far I've googled and then sent speculative letters/ filled in forms to as many I can find, but i'm starting to run out of companies to email. I was hoping some oil forums would possibly give me some more leads to companies and recruitment companies. :)

I had a UKOOA medical last year (although I assume you need one for each company?) and the survival course looks quite interesting.

The medical would be valid for 2 years. Most companies would recognise a valid UKOOA medical, so there should be no need for another.

Unless you have a specific skill or qualification that companies are tracking you down for, you are competing with loads of other candidates. If you don't get a reply from a company, within 2-3 weeks, send them a follow up letter just in case yours arrived with a pile of others on Monday morning and was shelved. It shows a bit of commitment and gets your name mentioned a second time.

If you get the standard 'sorry theres no vacancies' letter, send a follow up letter thanking them for the confirmation. The more you get your name on their desk, the more likely you are to get an interview

Good luck

I've just finished a BSc in Geology, so nothing too specific. :)

I was intending to reemail various companies at the beginning of october, however maybe i'll do it sooner now. A lot of the replies however were the usual "sorry no vacancies" as you suggested though. I am still thinking of maybe appplying to do a PHD, but that's a big step!

If you are wanting to get into a specific field I would suggest a taught masters rather as it will get you further.

Positions for geologists are rare at the moment due to the current climate. Geotechs being laid off and not much hiring in the oil industry.

You could try agencies like BBT, Matchtec, RGB, Anderselite, Fielders - a few that spring to mind but without a masters or experience your chances are limited.

Big names in Geotechnics are Soil Mechanics, Norwest Holst, Fugro (contractors), Jacobs, Peter Bretts, Golders, Mott Macdonald, Arup, WSP, Scott Wilson etc

For the oil industy the most luck you are likely to have is Tullow as they have had some big finds lately. The big guys are not likely to be looking for graduate staff....

Thanks for all the names, I've emailed a couple in my travels before but the others i'll look into (frugro and Tullow, which sent back about large volumes of inquiries so may be worth pestering...) :)

This is what I am finding, and what I sort of knew before I left, a masters is very useful, however at the moment I don't have the money, so i'm looking for either a job that i'll stay in for a while, or a job that I can make some money in for a year, then do a masters next year. Money was also one of my reasonings for a PHD instead of a masters too, as generally you can get funding to do one, instead of paying out. :)

I'm also looking in the service industry too (seismic etc.) which employ more straight graduates, but they're not employing either at the moment. Even the company I did an internship with isn't unfortunately.
