I am doing a routine oil and filter change on my D5 Volvo V70 MKlll and have been seeing conflicting information on the oil to use and how much, some sites say it has to be OW30 yet some say its 5W30 Volvo say its both? and as for capacity, sites online say anything between 5L and 6L my handbook says 5L yet Volvo say its 5.9L ................... confused, yes I am, so I am going for the original Castrol edge 0W30 and putting 5L in and checking the level for 10 mins, if it looks too low then I will just add as required, is this a good way or does anyone have any real info on the capacity needed.

Oil viscosity depends on ambient temperature and planned use. Quality is more important than viscosity, Edge is decent stuff. Normally you'll have two capacities - one when changing the filter and one when not. Usually it's 0.75-1l or thereabouts between min and max on a dipstick so nothing wrong with what you propose.

Fill it to just below max. Then start the engine, run for a minute or two switch off and recheck the level. You want it around midway between min and max. Either grade of oil recommended by Volvo, just make sure it is the correct spec. Being the correct grade doesn't always mean it will be the correct spec.

Its A5 which seems correct for my engine, though the conflicting information says A3 is also correct, I can see why people get confused, in the 80s it was just oil in forget haha, completely different today, you need a degree just to buy the stuff.......oh and a deep wallet

Handbook should list the correct grade and spec. As a ford derived vehicle it should take Castrol A5 just fine. For UK 5-30 is just fine. The 0 helps with starting at very cold temperatures found far in the north... 5-40 might be even better but good luck finding one in the correct spec.

The Volvo V70 isn't a Ford derived vehicle and the engine most certainly isn't.

Fully synthetic And it takes 6 Ltrs with a filter change ,fuel filter just in front of the back wheel is important to ,can be a arse to do as well

When I bought the V70 I also thought it was a Ford derived version of a Volvo so getting parts would be plentiful and cheaper, soon found out it isn't, its probably one of the last true Volvos that are not based on a Ford, the only thing it has in common with a Ford is the wheel hubs, they are swappable from what I can see

If your lifting it on ramps to do the oil change ,check the wishbones at the same time ,a common wear and tear problem on these ,mines sold last day today due to mainly the seats being to low for our advancing years ,apart from that good reliable cars

All done, it takes 6L and its solid underneath Jeff, very solid motors, glad I bought it
