Yes
I lost my lovely tripod over the weekend; hung it on a tree while I took a shot or two, then forgot to pick it up again, and some tow-rag's walked off with it.

But to add insult to injury, I checked my shots when I got home, and there it is, bold as brass, hanging on it's perch in full view!!!!

Anyway, I've ordered a replacement now, and will put this down to experience!

:bonk: :bonk: I wonder weather someone may have handed it in maybe check the local police station, I know if I came across something like that I would pick it up if no photographer in sight and hand it in, and to give you a sense of hope, last year when visiting some family that at the time lived in a really rubbish part of my local city I got out of the car and dropped my wallet with several bank/credit cards, DL & NI cards, cash, 4SD's etc, on the pavements, I reported it to the police, just in case any fraud was attempted then cancelled all my cards and cursed myself for all the expense of new DL, SD's etc only to get a phone call the following day to say that my wallet had been handed in and everything was still in there including the cash

The only annoyance was that DPA restrictions prevented getting the details of the person that handed it in so I could give them £20 as a thank you

Ouch. I almost done similar once, propped a monopod up against a wall to shoot something and started walking off. Thankfully the missus noticed before we even got 50 feet away and I strolled back and picked it up.

Imagine being the person who finds a tripod in a tree. They're probably walking around every park now hoping to find a 1Dx or D4 bush. Or trying to explain it to the missus when they walk in with a new tripod.

"Where did you get that?"
"I found it in a tree on my way home."
"Sure you did, we can't afford for you to get new equipment."
"Honestly, I found it."
"Money doesn't grow on trees your know."
"No, but tripods do!"

Sorry mate, couldn't resist :exit:

Lol, I know its a rather over used acronym but I really did laugh out loud. Thank you

Incidentally I once left my monopod in a shelter in Harewood house gardens it was still there 1 hour later

Ah well, that's a whole other story! Hampshire police now only accept lost property reports online, and say on the site that "we don't record all items that are reported to us", without saying what the criteria are for recording it!!!!!

Then, they've closed a whole load of front desks at police stations, including the main one in our area, making it very difficult for anyone to hand anything in even if they wanted to! It's bloody stupid :(

I left a note with my phone number at the entrance to the woods where I left it, and have been back a few times because people tend to put things they've found on the gate at the entrance, but no luck so far. I suspect it was kids finding it, thinking it was fun to play with, then throwing it away before their parents saw what they'd found!

I seem to remember I used something like that when I bought it in the first place!!!!!!

I worked a football match last season and somebody left a nikon 300mm f2.8 lens in it's case next to our police van. The inspector wanted to get the bomb disposal unit down to blow it up as he did not know what it was!

A very sheepish owner collected it the next day.

Gee, what are the credentials for being an inspector these days? Doesnt give one a lot of confidence ...

I left a film compact at a NT place some years ago. Id just got a digital and took both. Went back to where id left it to find it gone. The ticket booth hadnt had it handed in so i wasnt expecting to see it again. Got a call on my mobile on the way home as it got handed i and i drove all the way back again. :)

I've lost my wallet once and a guy appeared at the door with the contents all intact before I'd even realized I'd dropped it. I've also lost 2 mobile phones and got them both back, one dropped off and one picked up. Thanks to all concerned once again.
Moral of this is, there are still a great lot of very honest and good people out there who would do the decent thing. It's got to be worth a phone call to the local police station to see if anyone has handed it in. Maybe the person who found it has no interest in photography, or any use for it, and did the decent thing.

I did call the police this afternoon. You don't get to call the local station anymore, just a central switchboard. All they can say is that they have my online report, and if it gets handed in they'll be in touch. No point in me calling them apparently.

How anyone's meant to hand anything in though, when the nearest station with a counter is several miles away, is beyond me, but hey I guess that's the modern world :(

Hahaha, that made me chuckle. I remember my dad's horrified face when I told him the price tag of the camera I wanted. "For a camera!?" O.o! He did actually help me get my paws on mine in the end, he's always been supportive luckily.

Went slightly off-topic here. It's always a shame when we lose things :( I'm sorry to hear that! I hope someone honest can tell you what became of ittt.

ahh so its your lens caps i keep picking up in the hide at leighton moss - i've got a whole bunch of lens caps, none of which fit any of my lenses  :bang:

I found a Nice SLR once in Scotland, had to drive about 20 miles to find a Police station to hand it in. It did get reunited with it's grateful owner eventually.

I had a similar moment when I thought I had lost my SU-800 yesterday.

I was doing a pre-wed shoot for some freinds. I recommend that if you are going to do a shoot of your freinds you don't meet in the pub before hand, Had quite a few before we got underway.

Then went for curry and more beers, it was only when I got on the train home I realised that my SU-800 was not in my camera bag. just about to get off and get another train back to the loctaion before I found it on my pocket!

May be worth giving the local paper a shout?

Fixed that for you :naughty:

I left a HD video camera in a car I p'xed at a garage last year. I didn't notice until a couple of months later, by which point it was too late. The garage were unable to help.

It wasn't so much the value of the camera (managed to claim on insurance) but the footage of my kids on there lost.

I have done this many times also, Left SD cards in hotels and batteries, tripods... i rage at the time, mainly because id lost photo's i hadnt even uploaded!! :bonk:

...but eventually get over it... Eventually...

We got back to our tent after a days low fly shooting on the Bwlch top shelf, when I couldn't find my 1.4extender. I remember taking it off the lens before heading down the hill. By now, it was dark and no hope of going back up to find it.
Next morning whilst packing up the tent, it rolled out from under my sleeping bag. Talk about sigh of relief. I know it's not the same as actually losing something, but that second your heart stops................

Dean.

if you are on facebook or twitter report it on there, I know a few people who had stolen bikes found through facebook!

nikon 72mm and 77mm oh! and a Nikkor 80-400 VR maybe a 500 2.8,
I'm not fussed.:lol::lol:

I never lose things when out and about, only in the house.

Well, nothing from the police, nothing left at the woods, nothing via Facebook, and nothing from the wardens, so I've given it up as a lost cause and now have TWO replacements sitting in my office.

One is going back to Amazon as a lost cause though; review of both will be posted soon :)

I bought a Minolta XD11 on ebay from the states a while back and a previous owner has engraved on the bottom his name, driving license and social security number. I'm still kind of paranoid I may have a 'hot' camera!
