Well, having just bought my f2.8's I was gathering my all lenses together to take a show off photo of them when I drop my 18-135mm on the floor. :bang: :bang: :bang: The lens cap jams on and the filter shatters but no other physical damage was initally apparent until I looked through the lens - the aperture mecanism is well and truely knackered.

The annoying thing is that the lens attaches without errors and attempts to focus and even allows the shutter to fire (if you switch the camera to manual focus) - it would be fine if the photos were't blurred :shrug:

Oh well, that is what I pay insurance for - time to get in contact with Photoguard.

At least I have another general lens to use in the mean time

Indeed, that's what you pay your insurance for :thumbs:

I think if theres a case in point for getting insurance, this is it :)
 
Doh! and to think it was fine when it landed face first in the snow the other week. Hopefully Mr Photoguard nice man will sort you out with another one. From memory it was the limited edition gold plated and diamond encrusted one with a built in I-Pod but I could be mistaken? Just glad you're covered, good luck with the new lenses too.
 
Looks nasty. Hopefully you'll get a quick turn around with the insurance and have a nice new lens soon.

Ouch. I feel your pain having bust a lens myself today (is there something in the air?!)

Cheers to all; personally I'm seeing this as an opportunity rather than an upset - I'm hoping the insurance will actually replace my 18-135 with the very simliar but slightly cheaper and slightly better 18-70mm.

If not I still have the 35-70mm f2.8 and to be honest below 35mm I'll be wanting a wider aperture to get the DoF in landscape so I think a 10-20mm Sigma may be on the cards :D


as a side thought don't Nikon do a 17-35mm f2.8-3.5 lens or am I mistaken - I wonder what one of those S/H go for?
 
Ooops ... painful indeedy ... :eek: ... but peace of mind in insurance will hopefully see you sorted with a shiny new one soon ... ;)

UPDATE - I sent the claim off to photoguard by email yesterday after finally getting all the information they ask for (proof of ID, proof of address etc, copy of receipt / CC statement showing purchase etc) and they got back to me this morning asking me to send the lens to them; they will then have a response to me in 3 working days. I'm guessing they have the idea that it may be repairable?

However, I have to pay for the postage of the lens to them :thumbsdown:. So to ensure they get it, I'm covered against RM loss and I get a quick resolution I have to cover the postage costs by RMSD - fortunately the lens is quite light so should not cost too much (about £5 I think). Though I am feeling a bit ****** off by this - I shall be definately shopping about when it comes to renewal.

Keep us updated on PG's progress please, was looking closely at them as an insurer and would be interested for some more views on their service. I know I read on here the other day they weren't great :|
 
Yup, definitely keep us updated to how this turns out. I'm going to need some insurance at some point and it's always nice to know if a company actually pays out when you need to make a claim.

No if it's economically repairable they'll repair it. It's just that they are expecting me to pay to send the lens to them on their request which I feel is a bit off.

Indeed. I once dropped a Canon 24-70L. It was on the top shelf of a cupboard and I accidentally brushed it with my arm as I was reaching for something else. It fell 5 feet onto the floor and it did bounce. I tested the lens as thoroughly as I can and it's perfect. Amazing build quality. I can see why people call it the "brick"!
 
Is there an excess on the insurance policy, just wondered if it was worth claiming for a such relatively cheap lens as it'll probably tie you to their insurance come renewal as insurance companies don't like people who claim, it makes their books unbalanced, 100% in 0% out :suspect:
 
An update for you all - Photoguard has agreed to replace the lens :woot: and have authorised 1st Cameras to contact me to make the arrangements as discussed with them. I beleive that this is for an 18-70mm replacement rather than the 18-135mm which broke with the filter but I shall confirm this when 1st Cameras finally make contact. The claim was approved on Frday and 1st Cameras haven't been in contact since :shake:

Wack61 - most insurance companies have an excess of between £150 and £250 but photoguard don't have an excess, just a rule that they won't entertain claims of less than £100. I suppose when you consider this the requirement to pay for your own postage doesn't seem that harsh :shrug:

As for the canon comment :razz:, I am sure if this was a Pro quality lens (like the L) rather than a plastic mount kit lens it would have survived no problem.

Right it's worth claiming then, I thought there'd be a £50+ excess

I'm a bit hacked off with insurance at the moment as the policy for the dog needs renewing, last year it was £14 a month for the top level of cover with 0 excess in case of a claim, this year they've put it up to £19.99 but included extra benefits (such as dog psychotherapy) :thinking: which are no use to me at all and now there's a £90 excess as well

Try HealthyPets, we insured our cat for £25 a year.
 
UPDATE - Having rung up for a second time to complain about lack of contact from 1st Cameras :bat:, the insurance people put me through directly and having spoken to them I suspect that they were waiting for stock of the 18-135 before making contact (not great customer service). I asked if they had the 18-70mm instock as I would accept that instead (actually prefer it TBH) and they did so I have a 18-70mm plus UV filter on it's way to me and should be arriving tomorrow at work :woot: (unfortunately I won't be there until Friday as I'm away on business again).
