Oh Dear: The Marathon!!!

you have my respect! hve fun and enjoy!

'Nuff Respect Dark Star. If I had to add a tip it would be to find a couple of half marathons in the months before April (I presume it's in April again). This is what one of the chaps did for the company I work for.

You still have to do all the other training and getting out in winter to run can be quite depressing. I used to do it until I fudged up my knee big time (it's been under the surgeons knife 3 times now so no chance of me running on concrete or tarmac again).

When you need a pick me up in the dark months - you know we'll all be here

Thanks Lee and Carol and thanks for the tips Carol!

...and getting out in winter to run can be quite depressing.

Oh dear! Again!

good luck - i have done London 4 times (and around 20 marathons)- it's a GREAT DAY you will remember it

get on with the training now - 3 or 4 times a week will be ok - one long slow run with 2-3 shorter faster runs during the week - build up SLOWLY and have an easy week once in a while.

tell lots of people that you are doing it and keep them updated - it will help you through the hard bits - sign up with a charity and get sponsors - get your boss to put down a nice sum £5?? at the top of the list - people will follow what's above - never start with 50p !!!!

My wife ran it this year, she loved it but can't remember seeing much of London, the whole route was lined with cheering crowds. Write your name on your top and people will shout it out, can make a big difference when you hit a low point.

Also check out any local running clubs, they often have training groups for various distances.

great advice - the name on the shirt - front and back really works

pm me if you have any problems with training..

Thanks Martin - my main problem will be motivation and self-discipline - I need the 3 to 4 runs a week and I need to get out there and not summon up lame excuses (its wet, I'm tired, I'm washing my hair! :)) and I mustn't expect a rapid build in strength but look for slow and steady progress!

I'll get there :)

Day 3: 2nd training run around the country lanes somewhere near Atherstone :)

Bloody hard going :( 15 mins straight run then sporadic running and walking (more of the latter) as the course turned uphilll :bang:

Out for 40 mins at least and now feel tired but satisfied!

Weight this morning 13st 12lbs

Interestingly I find the music I listen to helps me!

For the last half mile Led Zeppelin's "How Many More Times" gave me a real boost :) And mid way Lou Reed's "Vicious" was a good kick. I'm gonna have to compile a good set of running songs :)

(PS I was thinking of keeping a log of training progress in here but if the mods would rather I didn't just let me know :))
