Not really a rant........well from me anyway.

Reading the various discussions on here about the service, or lack of, from Jessops just thought I'd stick another boot in.

In Norwich on Saturday with some friends I called in to Jessops as they are offering 0% finance and I'm considering buying myself a Crissy Prezzy of a Fuji X100 as I'm fed-up taking a load of heavy gear out when I just fancy a walk.

Anyhoo, they didn't have one on show so asked an assistant if they had one that I could look at and hold.....'Yes, we have one in stock but I'm not allowed to break the seal'

I just said thanks and walked out - my friend, who is a retail manager, was dumbfounded:cuckoo:

But then again, if they do break the seal, people on here would not buy them by all accounts. So the retailers cannot win can they?

I am sorry but I agree with the staff in jessops, if they break the seal and then get you coming in and buying one and get offered that box and you say
"why is the seal broken"
"well we had to open it to let a customer play with it"

I am sure you would not want it.

Like Fracster said they just cannot win at times.

Ok they should of had one on display but maybe they had to get permission from the manager to do that who might not have been in that day.

Hard one this, can see why they wouldn't want to break the seal, but Jessops are well known for selling ex display models at full price

Guess that's the price potential customers pay for so many people just having a play then buying online

Both, of course, valid points.

My 5DMkII came in a box which had been opened - perhaps I'm not an average on here as it didn't particularly bother me.

Also correct is the suggestion of asking the manager - not offered, but then I shouldn't have needed to remind the assistant.

As the manager of this Jessops store with one of the UK's best known internet retailers, with a retail outlet, as 'the opposition', I would sure as hell not want one of my staff letting a possible £1000 walk out of the door.

I'll admit that there are the 'window shoppers' out there.......but I aint one of them:wave:

How often have you seen a Forum thread where someone advises a prospective buyer to "go into Jessops and see how it feels then buy it off the internet" ? I think I'm also with them on this one, although it does feel a bit strange to be agreeing with Jessops! :suspect:

Bit of a difficult one this, but having been on the end of ropey ex-demo stuff from jessops trying to be sold as new - how about they have one just for demo that they sell as ex-demo when they are finished with it?

Plenty of others manage to do this with goods - curry's, comet etc

if you'd come to WEX just outside the city, we have a demo one, and do 6 months interest free

My point exactly:thinking:

This could be immensely costly for a multi-outlet company, however, there must be enough margin - there were racks of lower value demos available. Selling as 'ex-demo' would still retain a margin and may even encourage people to look for this type of bargain - thereby increasing unit turnover and potentially moving higher value cameras.

My local retailer in Preston is quite happy to let you touch stock and I know if I am spending a grand I would want to know the in's and out's of a ducks ***e before parting with it.

Incidentally I do use a local retailer in preference to a faceless interweb site for precisely this reason:thumbs:

Hmm. I remember when the D200 was coming out. I was living in South Africa, and there were a lot of rumours that there wouldn't be much stock available. I asked our usual dealer, who said they were expecting ten cameras and offered to put one aside for me. Come the day, we went to have a look at it, but no. He wouldn't open the box. There was a waiting list for them, and it was buy unseen or not at all. Simple enough, I didn't buy it.

Six months later, he still had most of the cameras on the shelf and so did the other dealers who were selling it. The price - roughly double the UK price then - was just too high and people, like me, who were prepared to consider it wanted to actually handle the camera first. Nikon shot themselves in the foot. They should have made some sort of arrangements to visit the dealers on particular dates with demo models, if they couldn't give the main dealers one to keep in store.

My local Jessops do as well. I picked up their last GF2 as ex-display and so got a better deal than if I'd ordered from the website. Haggled for a bag too... :)
