B&H package arrived this afternoon with 12mm extension tube and ring flash, put on 5D and had a play........hmmm, going to take some getting used to , main thing is though, and the reason for the title, I'm going to need an expensive tripod arnt I, any suggestions:bonk:

What's your budget and also what type of photography do you need it for? Just macro?

Cheers, Mark

Why will you need an expensive tripod?

You have a good flash so shutter speed shouldn't be a problem.

I didn't use a tripod for this:

not too sure on budget, £2-300, maybe more, macro and some long stuff( hell thats a technical term)will need to be quite chunky, 5d with a 100mm macro, flash, or a 300mm f4L

not read the little book yet, was a quick play(at work)I have a manfrotto but it cant handle the weight of my camera, and i dont think i can buy a new head for it

If you're gonna get seriously into wildlife, I'd definately suggest going the whole mile and getting a Gitzo.

Will cost a small fortune but this tripod is a keeper. Will outlast you for sure and will probably end up being handed down. They're that good!

The only thing against them IMHO is that they don't go down that low for very low level macro shots..

thanks Markta , (wanders off to for sale section):)

Probably worth getting carbon fibre legs then. Velbon is quite a bit cheaper than Gitzo and pretty decent. However if you're going to end up buying longer lenses in the future you may be better off buying a top of the line gitzo now.

No worries

Not sure whether anyone will be parting with theirs, for the very reason stated above. Ya never know though :suspect:

Good luck with finding one! You could try posting a request on the wanted section. I wouldn't hold your breath though. Did I mention they're very highly rated?

Agree with Jamougha, learn from me and if you do plan on going better than a 300mm f4, then you may as well get a 3 series Gitzo right now, if you have the funds..

Hope this helps.

Mark

PS. If you are going down the Gitzo route, don't forget to factor in a high quality ballhead and its cost...just my 2p worth

Just to be of extra assistance, have looked on the Bay and there's none used available on there...

Yup, whatever set of legs you get really. Plus some arca-swiss type quick release plates. It gets expensive really fast.

Redsnapper ones are good VFM.

thanks all, had a lookie at the gitzo range, lots to choose from, dont want( be honest, cant afford or justify)anything longer than 300, so I'll weigh it on all its glory and see what i need, then look at whats on offer, thanks again for the tips

a-i-s, may be worth dropping Ian (Kerso) a line, with the model number you're interested in and he can give you an indication of availability and price, if Gitzoitis has set in

I bought mine from him and saved about £100...

Mark

PS. almost forgot:bonk:, his email address is 2kerso@gmail.com or kerso1123@msn.com

The Gitzo Explorers have all the flexibility of a Benbo, I've recently discovered, since I bought my 2531EX.

If you've got £400 available, its a beautiful piece of equipment.

As for the head, I keep plugging the Novoflex Magicball. It's a lovely piece of kit. It has much more flexibility than a normal ball head, and you don't need a quick release plate. (About £160 from Speedgraphic)

You see red X's?

Oh...should be a picture there - I can see one!

The link is malformed, it's trying to show an attachment from the forum database rather than a link to a jpg. I suspect you copied the link from the wrong place.

Code:

is what you put inside the IMG tags

Hmmm...I have changed the original link. Same picture but hope it works now!

See my original post for the pic.

Yep, and the it's over the forum size limits. You're not winning with this one
