Official TP Single Malt Whisky Thread...

Many years ago, I had the pleasure of being invited along to the Single Cask Whisky club in London (near to Fleet Street), by a work colleague.
It was a sublime experience, comparing the peaty notes of the Laphroig type malts with the other malts which exhibit almost citric notes.
Whisky is almost as complex as wine - but generally speaking a lot more expensive.
I think you mean the Scots Malt Whisky Society?
I was a member for a few years - thoroughly recommend it. Probably the cheapest private members club in London! Plus there are branches elsewhere.

Yeah theres also a couple of branches in Edinburgh, I live a couple of minutes away from the Vaults in Leith which is handy!

There are some cracking ones, best this year have been

Lakes distillery blend - very drinkable
Nikka from the barrel
Hibiki 17yr old - lovely probably my favourite japanese whisky

I have also tried two supermarket ones from Lidl and they were pleasantly nice.

I had the miss or good fortune (depending how you look at it) of being introduced to single cask malts a few years back, my current favourite is Douglas of Drumlanrig 14 year old Craigellachie.

Has anyone else noticed the increasing trend by whisky manuf's of not putting an age statement on a lot of their bottles at the moment? This is only going to get worse I reckon, as it means they can bung in young whisky's cheaply and still try and flog them at "full" price as it were. So I've started boycotting the likes of Macallan (Gold, amber etc, shame as the 12yo fine oak was absolute belter), Talisker (Skye, storm).

Some malts I like/have
Bowmore 12 yo (in the black box, not the green "select" one),
Bowmore Darkest 15 yo.
Talisker 10 yo.
Monkey Shoulder
Glenfiddich 15 yo Solera. (distillers edition nowhere near as good)
And Glenfarclas do a few good ones as well.

I think it probably was. It was a peculiar little place. You had to go up a narrow flight of stairs, then there was a medium sized room with nice chairs and tables, with a jug of water (because whisky takes on a different taste when diluted slightly) on each. The whiskys were superb, and it was a great evening - I went a few times, because one of the partners was a member.

On Bleeding Heart Lane? Yup, that's the one. I used to go quite a lot but abandoned my membership when I had children as I wasn't using it.

I was invited to it, because I started a wine society at one firm I worked for up in the area. The partner used to come along (once a month - £10 to £15 a go, we used to get fifteen to twenty people along), so kind of rewarded me and a couple of other folks with a few trips to the Malt Whisky Society - very civilised:)

Have kept up the profits of Caol Ila for many decades, although I suspect a slight fall since I gave up the drink a wee while ago:mad:

Yeah I've noticed this new no age statement trend, I've had one of the Laphroaigs and the Talisker Storm but I do prefer the 10 Year Old, also got a nice 1L bottle of Talisker Dark storm to open soon!!

The Dark Storm is very nice!

I have a bottle of Talisker Skye open at the moment

I like pretty much any of the Islay malts and have enjoyed the occasional Talisker for probably 25-years now. Currently have Glenturret, Talisker Storm, Lagavullin and Laphroag QA in the cupboard. Also an expired half bottle of Port Charlotte which I've kept to remind me to get some more.

Don't mind if I do!
