*** Official Nikon D3X Discussion Thread ***

It's official: in the next few weeks, Nikon will begin shipping a high resolution counterpart to the D3. Called the D3X, the widely-leaked new digital SLR from Nikon will incorporate a 24.39 million image pixel CMOS sensor, a standard ISO range of 100-1600 and 5 fps full resolution shooting rate into a body that is effectively the same as the D3. The D3X, Nikon's highest resolution digital SLR to date, is slated to reach retailers in December 2008 at an expected street price of US$7999.95 in the U.S.

Not exactly the price I was hoping for :(; this isn't exactly the good news I was hoping to hear and read this Monday morning.

Still, though, it's good to finally have this camera released.

So that'll be £6995 here then :bang: It'll be interesting to see if Nikon's version of the sensor (which they say is an in-house-design :suspect:) will be any better than the Sony one....

I wondered if Marcus would get one early and he has. Lucky sod.

£5499 though - jay-sus!

....£5499 which is exactly the price it was predicted to be, based on the fact that it's a 1Ds competitor not a 5D competitor.

I think I'll have two, I've got a coupe of tables with one leg shorter than the other here, need summat to prop em up with.

I think a lot of people don't understand the REAL differences enough between the D300, D700 and D3 as it stands today... the D3X further muddies the waters.

Looking at photos posted on the internet you can't possibly begin to grasp the ramp up in those models any more really than you can truly consider the subtle and sublime differences between ok glass and absolutely top notch glass.

I guess most of us will never get to see what the D3x is capable of in reality, it will be very good.... for the target audience who are making stuff for the glossy magazines or creating huge prints to hang in art galleries - because that is what its for.

Its not the right tool for me, any more than a 1DS was but that doesn't make it "pointless" or "rubbish" - its just not designed for me!

PS radiohead - fantastic work there! Hope the client was happy - you've done a lovely job!

Well I would have waited for a D700x / D800 call it what you will as I don't like big bodies - but the price appears borderline insane.

I'll certainly be keeping my Canon 5D MKII pre-order which is £3400 lower than the D3X RRP. Or I could get 2 Sony A900's and a CZ 16-35 f/2.8 and still buy a beer!

The price has just floored me!

Tooooo Much cash for me

Can even justify a D3 yet, some day my dreams will come true and i may be able to afford a D300.

i do love the crop factor, maybe when i am better more experienced might go full frame.

i am more concerned at the moment buying more Pro glass,

i currently have a 50mm F1.8 and 70-200mm F2.8 and mixture of sigma lenses

7999.95 USD = 5,321.64 GBP according to today's exchange rate, still very disappointing, so i will just have to dream on

Over the next 2 years technology is going to change more than we can comprehend.
A company called 'Red' have been working on revolutionary digital imaging technologies that will apparently change the entire digital world.
I thought it was a hoax but now I'm not so sure.

Technology has been progressing aggressively, but if 'Red' has the money in the same place as their mouth, technological progression and evolution is about to jump a few generations.

I just hope Red change the appearances of their products to look more like camera's rather than Darth Vader's helmet polisher!

The way I see it....

D3X = £5,500

Hassleblad 39MP H3D-II, Digital, and 80mm f2.8 Lens.... = £11K.

I would double my money and go medium format. It would be a proper sidekick to my D3.

The trouble is though, some of the blad glass is INSANELY priced.

Depends what you want. If you have already bought into a Nikon lens system then it will be the way to go if you want top IQ. It really is now 1D/D3 and 1Ds vs D3x at the top of the market.

As a Canon shooter, I hope it persuades Canon to drop the 1.3x crop and launch a full frame 1D in the fullness of time...

Looks like a cracking piece of kit and I think it will sell well into its target market.

Not really GB, Nikon don't have a direct comparison to the crop sensor'ed sports tog'ing 1D, although they now have something to compete with the 1DS.

Depends whether you view sensor size as a key metric. Both offer a 10-12 Mpx/9-10fps "high speed model" and 20-25 Mpx 4-5 fps "high quality" model. Both offer full weatherproofing, top "pro" features.

The 1.3 crop was brought into effect for cost reasons with the original 1D. Pro sports photographers worked fine with 1V HS and F5 full frame film cameras. If you can afford the right glass, then I don't think sports benefits from a crop. I can see (and hope) it will go the other way with Canon moving the 1D range to full frame rather than having this one anomalous camera that has a crop, but no custom lenses to take advantage of it (i.e. a 1D sensor filled out to full frame would offer almost 16 Mpx with the same size pixels)

Well I'll say it again... it makes the Canon 5D MKII and Sony A900 seem like tremendous value at the moment.

We won't have to wait long for the D700x / D800 though, although this price really has surprised me as its £2k north of my worse fears here.

D700x / D800 by July 2009 is a shoe-in.

well im glad its high ... will keep the used value of my D3 high hopefully in case i sell and jump ship ..! ;)

Pro's are gonna buy it, this 5d thing is a load of cods, a d40 looks like a bargain compared to a 5d...etc...etc...etc.
This thing will be worth every penny to the guy's who end up shooting it, the same can be said about the 5d and the d40....worth every penny to the guys who end up shooting them.

That shot of the woman in the white top is pretty damn good. Once sharpened it looks great.

Gotta say I agree with this:

Yes, I can afford it, but I simply find it not to represent good value. After testing the 24MP Sony A900 (which I purchased for less than the equivalent of US $2,500 here in Toronto last month) the thought of paying US $8,000 for a camera that that has the same resolution, the same frame rates, a similar large and bright viewfinder, etc, just seemed to me to be a bad value proposition. The Canon 5DII at well under $3,000 is another current alternative in a full-frame 20+ MP camera.

He's cancelled his pre-order!

I would think the long term (12 months from now) online price will be £4,500-£4,750 ish. I.e. about £1k more than the current price of a D3, which seems fair to me.

D3 is £2.5 k now - not £3.5k
So even after this drop you are suggesting it will be 2k more expensive. IIRC release price for the D3 was £3300.

Hmmmm can't say those test shots really sold it to me.

You'd have thought Nikon would have been a little more careful who they gave it to to review...

Doesn't say 5k's worth of camera to me...

Yes I saw those Gary, they were the ones that didn't really wow me :(

The shots are poor, I can only assume the "Delete" button wasn't working on that D3X sample, most of them are soft or completely OoF.

User error, not the camera though!
