OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

The other thing you can look at, is when the camera winds on only the inside of the take up spool rotates,if there is a foreign body stuck inside the take up spool that may course a problem.

Considering I always say I'm not a massive fan of 35mm rangefinders, I've just bought a Yashica Lynx 14 :0). I've always fancied trying one and it looks to be in good condition. Guess I'll be selling the XA on once my new seals arrive from John Goodman!
You can look forward to getting some great night shots with that. I've got an Electro 35 which has a 1.7 lens, so the 1.4 should be even better. I don't know what batteries the meter takes (probably some mercury type), so I hope there will be enough room for you to solder a Schottky diode in series with the cell, in order to lose a bit of voltage. Otherwise, as it's manual, take a hand held meter. I think you will be amazed at just what a low hand-held shutter speed you can use if you prop yourself against a wall or a tree. I don't know how low my Electro went as it's automatic but I could hear 2 clicks and there wasn't too much camera shake.

Thanks Nick. According to the Yashica Guy, the Lynx 14 takes a single PX625A so I've ordered a new one for a couple of quid. I've had a couple of Electro 35's before too and they're really nice cameras so I'm hoping the Lynx will be just as good.

New to me toy. Minolta prod 20. More style than function! by Suzy Richards, on Flickr

I have got as far as getting a film in and loaded. Weather has typically turned to poop :(

Film loads the other way around ie right to left. It is a looker of a camera. It's quite light as well. Not a spec of dust inside (it will be full of dust and cat hair in no time)

Doesn't seem to be a readout about shutter speed or aperture in the viewfinder so it's an opaque operator.

Knowing Steve, not a lot more than £00.00p. It's not his boots that squeak when he walks!!

To be honest, I don't get a lot of time to shoot much at all so if I had too many cameras I'd never decide what to use. As it is, I enjoy being able to try various different cameras for minimal outlay as well as enjoying a certain amount of customisation and repairing so analogue kit fits perfectly.

I think that's a fair price for a brand new set of John Goodman seals for an XA....that is what you wanted wasn't it? ;0)

Tell you what, attach the XA to the seals and then send them both over and you've got a deal ;-)

Aye but if you had a couple you were comfortable with when you did get out you'd not be worried if the camera worked or how to operate it.

However I've just bought two that I don't even need, one needs repairing and one just to play with the auto focus!

I'm still trying to find the couple I'm most comfortable with (I've also had 3 EOS 30's to play with the AF!). I'm pretty much fixed on my Yashica 635 as it shoots everything but am going through a 35mm phase again and strangely enjoying the Fed 1G. When the Yashica Lynx arrives that may replace it as my 35mm rangefinder though.

Also, all of my cameras work fine thanks, especially the ones that have been tinkered with ;0)

This arrived today:

Another thing of beauty. Think I'm going to need a user manual though! by Suzy Richards, on Flickr

The battery compartment is underneath and I have no idea how you set film speed when the flash unit isn't attached. Which makes me think you can't so you have to attach it, load a film then take it off which is a bit annoying.

No idea how the back opens.

It's got batteries in but they look a little on the green side. Fortunately LR44s so actually available easily :) Not sadly any of the two different types that fit other Minox type cameras but oh well!

I could do with a user manual for it. All the vito ones are the wrong sort. The minox ones I have don't seem to be quite right either as they have the battery compartment in the front not underneath. Anyone know where there is a manual for this particular model?

It's well dinky :)

Is it DX coded? So you only need to tell the flash what you've loaded?

there were 2 versions of this camera, one with an f2.8 lens and one with a f5.6, which one do you have Suz?

It's the 2.8 Colour Skopar.

Tried pulling up the windy thing which is how my old fuji opens but that doesn't open it.

Tried again and suddenly the back popped open! Got a film loaded. Even attached the wrist strap. Found an ASA read out thingy on the front of the lens at the bottom and that's set at 200 ASA which is fortunately the speed of the film I'm using.

Found the old pouch I used to keep my old panasonic compact in. It's exactly the right size :)

I can't get over how small it is.

It might be. I'll know when I put a 400 asa film in it :)

Definitely need to find a user manual for it.

Found the user manual kind of on Butkus manual site. It's like the balda 35.

Setting the ASA means holding two lugs on the lens apparently.

I also spent some time staring at the distance scale wondering where the aperture adjustment was...will be odd using something without aperture control as I live in AP mode normally.

Not strictly a film camera, but for the time being I'll be using it exclusively with my Pentax K lenses - just ordered a Fujifilm X-E1 from Wex Photographic! Can't wait, I've wanted one of the Fujifilm X cameras for a while now :)

I've just used my new (to me) Sony a6000 with a SuperTakumar 135mm. I really liked shooting manual focus with the Sony's focus peaking. All the involvement of shooting manual focus, but with realtime feedback on what the focus ring and aperture rings are doing to my shot - I feel like I'm learning as well as shooting.

(Obviously I won't embed those photos in F&C :P but here's an album if anyone's interested - https://www.flickr.com/photos/93569388@N08/albums/72157676781069465 )

Pretty certain I've cocked up the first roll in the vito. I had bother with it not staying flat so I think it slipped the lug thingies so it didn't wind on properly at the start. You can't wind it with the back open so there is no way of making certain it's ok. It looked like it had wound on but when I thought I had got to the end it never stopped and when winding it back it was only a short amount of winding before it went free.. Stuck a roll of well out of date jessops to see if I can get anything.

This is why I like motorwind. If it doesn't wind on properly it sits and flashes and complains.

Could also do with finding an interesting camera that takes the PX28 style 6v batteries as I had to guess at what might fit the Vito.

I'm not saying size matters but...

My Lynx 14 arrived today and is mint externally so I'm guessing it's lived its life in the never-ready case! Unfortunately, that meant two things;

1) Shutter blades were stuck together.
2) The battery left inside has leaked.

I've fixed 1 and the shutter is now opening perfectly after some disassembly and application of lighter fluid. Problem 2 is going to need a bit more work. I cleaned up the battery terminal with vinegar which removed the acid but the wire between the battery and meter button is knackered and came loose so I'll have to do some more disassembly to replace that. Looks like I'll need to remove the lens housing to get to it so that's for another day.

Overall I'm happy with it although it's a pretty solid chunk of metal and glass!

Just once you're going to come on with a new camera and tell us how well everything works ;)

Looks minty though, shame its been left to rot internally.

I can't get past the sexy little XA.

:)

@steveo_mcg I'm looking forward to that day too, honestly! This was listed as being fine but get the feeling nobody actually tested it properly. I wasn't too bothered about the shutter blades because I already knew it was relatively straightforward to get to them from the front (once I could get the front element to unscrew!). I'm more annoyed about the meter because I was looking forward to it having it over my Fed which doesn't. It's not the end of the world but the leatherette is mint too so it's a shame I'll have to remove it.

@simon ess The XA can pretty much fit inside the Yashica! I fitted new seals to the XA last night so just need to touch up some of the black paint on the rear door and it's all good. Now it's been stripped and CLA'd it's firing perfectly along with the meter. The only issue I have is that my right eye isn't as good as my left and there's not really enough camera for me to use my left eye and still hold it so it's not for me.

My cousin just rang and said he has found a camera bag while he was clearing his father in laws house. The olf fellow died 6 months ago and they have gotf Pentz round to getting the house sold. His wife is an only child.

Upshot.... he opened the bsg and has found a very tidy Black Pentax KX with a lens and 4 other pouched lenses and liads of bits.

His wife has said I can have them if I want them. I offerwd to buy the kit but she said no the kit was mine as long as I use it!

As good a reason to visit Matlock I think!

I do sonder just how many gems are tucked away under stairs or in wardrobes etc.

I had been tracking a KX and a KM on the bay but just never bid or bought. I had been concentrating on a 645n kit build.....
