OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

On reading the other replies, perhaps the end slipped off the spool. I was relying on the numbering advancing in the window showing the frame number but it sounds as though I should have noticed the film spool top/rewind lever rotating as I wound on. I have no recollection of this, so perhaps that's the issue, in which case I fee pretty stupid.

Welcome to the club. :D

I'm a fully paid up member of the "101 ways to stupidly screw up a film" club.

While you have the back open check that the mirror is lifting up and the shutter is working...set the speed to 1 sec and aperture of the lens to say wide open and you should see a blob of an image. If ok then waste the first few frames of Vista to check that it's windindg on.

I fee pretty stupid.

Wait 'til you progress into LF and forget to close the lens preview before removing the darkslide, thus stuffing a 5x4 sheet of film......when it can cost as much for one frame LF as it does for a complete roll of 35mm film, frustration and anger can be added to the feeling of stupid!:D

Thanks excalibur2. I had already loaded a new film before I read this! Pretty sure the mirror is lifting and the shutter is working ok and it looks as though the film is winding on.

Thanks Asha. I hadn't appreciated LF was so expensive. Frustration to look forward to maybe...

Sounds very much like the film not being taken up in the spool. Have a quick check that the camera is metering okay by dry firing it - the slow speeds on Auto (point it into a dark scene, and the shutter should stay open for at least a few seconds), and that the shutter is opening and closing correctly. If that's all fine, it's almost certainly film not being taken up.

Well I blame my camera..if it's not idiot proof then it's a bad design :D But no camera is bullet proof if it has a fault and the film wind on spool might be slipping.

If a camera has a fault then it is nothing to do with the design,it is a fault that causes the problem and the Nikon FE film loading procedure if followed as intended is bullet proof and the manual covers all aspects.

Hey @Asha

When are we going to see your M4 in all it's glory ??

Is that a Retinette 1b...I bought mine new once upon a time

Morning All

I am looking at getting the Kodak Retinette 1 B and The Kodak B Pocket cameras serviced these were my Grandad's and Great Uncle's respectively I have brought some film for the pocket camera and have film to put in the 1B but want to make sure they are working

I know they are not worth anything but for me they belonged to my family members and I would love to use them.

I'm based in Worcestershire

Dry run the camera,s to see that the aperture and speeds are working, then run the film through and get them developed at a low cost company I use Photo Express in Hull for C41 only and we get a 50p per film discount for being TP members.

You have to send two films, but, dev and scan last time was around £10.00 for both.

No point in spending on CLA if not needed.

Thanks Richard I will have a look over the weekend I think the shutter is stuck on the 1B but will double check

I have never used a 1b but many of the other cameras of that era of a similar type (Voigtlander Vito 11 etc.) need a film loaded before the shutter will fire.

Andy

Thanks @Andysnap I'll stick a pound world film in it and see what happens! Been a few years since I loaded a film into a camera could be interesting!

Well they probably weren't made to Leica standards as mine broke down after a few years, but it did me a favour as I threw it away and went into the lovely world of the SLR and bought a Pentax S3......anybody old enough will remember the adverts "just hold a Pentax" h'mm well.

No, they don't need a film in to enable the shutter. I still have my late father's Retinette 1B. He took better photographs than I do, so I quite like it. Maybe the self-timer lever is stuck halfway to jam the shutter. Try closing manually with a bit of light pressure in the direction that the spring wants to take it. If you can't wind on any more, that does mean the shutter is stuck.

How is the shutter on that Praktica B100? I had a BC1 back in the mid 80's that broke in just over a year of use & wanting to give one a try again, have just gone through another two from ebay, both of which were broken. One, no matter what you film speed/aperture/shutter combination set always claimed overexposed. The other would only fire the shutter at one speed no matter what. Have read horror stories of how unreliable the Praktica bayonet bodies were & that there were bins full of broken bodes. Shame really as the Pentacon glass is often quite good.

Decided against trying a 4th BC1 & have listed the lenses on ebay. Like your MTL50 much more :) Been thinking about getting one to keep my MTL5 company.

Well it looks like the BC1 is not the most reliable camera as sometimes mine jams on wind on..but found a dodge to overcome it and is to connect the auto winder and that frees it. I don't really want to connect the auto winder permanently as it just adds to the weight, but if the jamming occured too fequently then I suppose that's the only answer.
Some of the prakticar lenses are excellent and sought after but you have to know which ones, and erm I keep forgetting when seeing these lenses at the bootie.

You appear to have some unnecessary bits and bobs attached to your camera.

(To add, I've always resisted the draw of a Leica m, mainly because I'm a pauper, but they are very nice cameras and an M2 I borrowed from a friend was particularly nice!)

Just in case anyone fancies a new toy it might be advantageous to head over to the classified section. ;) Just sayin'

(I'm a pauper)

:ROFLMAO: yeah rite!

Me too! .....I wasn't before I bought the M4 :D

Time for tea........Lentil soup, like I had yesterday, will have same tomorrow and probably for the next 3 months.....but it's worth it to have a Leica .....Not!:p

On a more serious note, without doubt they are a thing of beauty but that can be said of many cameras .....They have a name that is seen, like Hassleblad, to be up there with the cream of cream. but does that really make them "better"?

I've said before, a "good" photo does not come from kit......Different lenses etc are sharper blah blah blah but ultimately the camera is nothing without a decent tog behind it.....The eye, and skills of a good tog will never be replicated in a camera.

My shots will be just as varied (excellent, decent, not bad and carp) with this Leica as they are with the rest of the gear that i have......Nonetheless i have enjoyed the couple of rolls already put through it and will continue to enjoy shooting with it.

I have a film in it that's almost finished so maybe I'll have some piccies to post soon.;)

Dammit Andy you teaser, I can't afford to visit the Classifieds section!!:D

Totally unnecessary Nick, but don't they make her look delightful .....Ladies always look good wearing "jewellery" :D

I've received an Old New toy today :0)

I sold this M645J last year but after shooting some different kit since then I realised that it's been my favourite all round system so bought it back of Nick!

I've also bought another 35mm 3.5 lens so I've got my perfect landscape setup again.

Now I just need some film and a bit of sunshine!
