OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

Mid -week all being well!

Postman's just been! :D

My god it's a heavy beast - but what a beauty! I've a feeling this is going to take up permanent residence on the blad. It took me 5 minutes outside in good light to find the scratch which is so tiny I'm surprised the guy mentioned it, but props to him for doing so.

I just raided the fridge to find I'm all out of 120 - b****r! :gag: Time to look around for some Portra I think.

My latest acquisition:

Grips were a bit tatty when it arrived so I splashed out on some new rubber for it from Nikon. Looking forward to using it in earnest [look out for a very nice F90x and EOS 1N in the classifieds shortly!].

Ooh! thats luvverly.

Andy

I'm completely new to medium format! However, after some recent fun with 35mm film, I put a speculative bid into ebay and won. My (new) precious arrived this morning! Looks in excellent condition - even had batteries in it and the box contained 13 rolls of assorted film! The shutter is loud though.... I've not got a lens yet, so will be on the lookout for a reasonably priced 75mm 2.8 to begin with.

Just got an MD-E motor drive for my Nikon EM... I love it!!

Here are three new toys, which I have purchased over the last week. It feels really good to have a good lens on the camera at last (whether it be film or digital)

I have yet to try out the two Takumar lenses (a portrait session this weekend may be ideal), but I have a Spotmatic 1a which may come in useful.
I have used the Carl Zeiss 135 3.5 on the Sony (sorry folks, I know), and it seems really nice and smooth.

Well this baby, complete with flash cubes, arrived today

That is rather wonderful looking

Think how much better it'd be with the 35-105mm or a nice 50mm f/1.2L on there :naughty:

so another pic of the A-1 next week....

already have a nice Canon FD 50mm 1.8 S.C. .......sharp as a sharp thing

had to repair 2 MA battery carrier spring contacts - uses 12 x AA
FYI .... Maplins do 8way AA carriers for £1.29 with identical spring contacts, so a simple DIY fix job

eBay is dangerous... impulse buy, mostly because it came with an FL 50mm f/1.4 :)

Isn't it strange how much aesthetics play a part in our choice of cameras/lenses. This isn't a Nikon/Canon rant at all but I really don't like the look of the A-1, it looks lumpy and ugly. The FT on the other hand looks really nice and stylish, now, the Nikon F3 is a thing of beauty in my eyes yet others find that one ugly. Its a strange thing is subjectivity.

It's true, very true... I have to say, I generally don't like the "panda" style cameras - even my AE-1 was a all-black version. I have to say though, that the FT above looks nice, a bit like a overgrown Canonet 1.7QL

Generally I prefer all-black bodies too.

However, black/siver does rather suit the FT, and it makes a very nice noise (not at all like a Canonet) :)

Well for some one who wants to take photos, it's no good having a camera that wins a beauty contest, but it has to feel right in your hand and handle well.

Precisely why I shoot 9/10ths of my film stuff using the EOS-3. I've yet to find a camera (fillum or dijikal) that feels as good as the '3 does. They could have used my hands as the dimensional model for that camera - everything really just does "fall neatly to the hand" for me. Couple that with a good record for reliability, a metering system and auto/semi automated modes that are equally spot on, and the wonder is why I bother fannying around with anything else - fillum or dijikal.

My T90 must be a similar size to EOS-3?.... but with my small hands the T90 doesn't feel right. :(

I totally agree but when you first come to photography, whether digi or fillum, the look is an important part of your decision making and generally speaking colours your choices from then on. I started with Nikon because it felt, looked and acted right and I still prefer those things about most Nikon cameras (apart from some of the later plastic film jobs) but I now appreciate many (too many ) styles and shapes, but at the end of the day if it doesn't take good pictures, no matter how pretty it is, its out of here.

Andy

EOS-3, 161mm x 119mm x 70.8mm and 780g
T90 , 153mm x 121mm x 69mm and 800g

so the T90's a wee bit smaller, and a smidge heavier, at least compared to the non-gripped EOS-3. With a Grip on it, the EOS-3 is a complete behemoth! Still - it balances out well with those really heavy AF lenses with the red bands on them :)

For my first decent camera the advert at the time was "just hold a Pentax".

So you'd like a T90, but the Eos-3 does everything for you so unless some one gives you one, you'll give it a miss eh.

really puzzled here...just put my Nikon F3 [ with 50mm 1.8] alongside my Canon A-1 [28mm 2.8] -- albeit equipped with Motor drive as above

the 2 are not 'really' radically different......

perhaps it's more of a familiarity/handling thing..?

It's not so much that, to be honest Brian, so much as I really try not to have kit that I don't use, and as I've a perfectly serviceable A-1 to use with the EF lens collection I've no real need for one, other than the curiosity value of owning "the missing link". Maybe someday one of my ludicrous low-ball ebay bids will win, and I'll pick one up for beer-budget money, but I'm not losing any sleep in the meantime.

I know what you mean John but there are lots of little ways in which they are different which when added together make a big difference. Also as you say, for me it feels more natural in the hand.

It's curious what people like and dislike. I always think the A1 is one of the best looking cameras Canon ever made - or anyone made for that matter. The A1 wa so advanced for it's time with LED readouts of shutter speed and aperture in the viewfinder, AP, SP, Manual and Full Programme shooting available as well as programmed flash with a suitable flashgun.

The only thing I found quirky about the A1 was the manner of selecting apertures and shutter speeds with that fiddly little wheel on the front of the camera, and can't say I was a lover of that particular feature, but the camera was a quantum leap into new territory which was quickly copied by other manufacturers. Had the basic body shape continued no doubt we'd have seen a mode dial appear of the type we're all familiar with, but all the automation signalled the start of a drastic change in body type with LED screens quickly appearing and all manufactures followed this route. The A1 was the catalyst for a lot of these changes though without a doubt.

There's no denying the build quality of an F3 or an F1N. I've replaced my A1 (now John's) with an F1N, and it suits me to have a proper shutter speed dial and apertures where they should be - on the lens, but the A1 is a far more advanced camera than the F3 or the F1N in many respects.

I picked up an EOS 3 with grip recently (I guess I should post a pic in here!), and it sure is a fair size! I picked it up quite cheap and unfortunately didn't clarify that it came with the standard grip as well, so due to its size it's not getting as much use as intended at the moment!

You're so right, and that from a Nikonite that wouldn't spit on a Canon if it was on fire.....wait.....that's you Cedric.
Over time you learn to appreciate classic gear regardless of the manufacturer, where it not for a wish to shoot some M42 I would never have bought an A1, and in truth I've never even shot it because it developed a cough, but that cannot disguise its obvious pedigree.
If I didn't have an F3 I'd probably get it repaired.:)

Miles did a super job on my A1 -- now passed over to kayjay

new light seals, mirror buffer and 'cough' lubrication + general cleanup for £38
returned by RMSD at my request for +£10

Thanks John, but I think mine may need parts, its 3 days into an auction now anyway.
They are certainly well worth the cost and effort of a CLA and seals job even if there's nothing wrong with them.

All works, lens seems in perfect condition... might need to replace the light seal but we'll see how it goes. Just some film and developer to get now.

De vere 507 with multigrade 500 head...don't think the family know yet, just how big it is.

Ooo God, I looked at those for a while, could never find one close enough to go pick up.
It won't be tooo bad if its a wall mounter, but if its the full fat floor standing thing, its a big ole hunk of hospital cream metal..

Luckily it's the bench model, the freestanding model would take about 10 of us to move.
I was after a 504 but I've found the 507 for an excellent price.
Just need a 20x24 easel and a few other bits and I'll be printing like it's 1999 :)

Can't wait as it's been around 15 years since I did a big FB print, and that was from 6x6....I'll be printing 5x4 :)

I've used one of them at college if it has the Ilford timer/grade setting box with it, then it is really easy to make prints from.

Oh and watch your finger it gets bloody hot when its been on for a while.

have just taken delivery of an M42 fit Promura 135mm f3.5 lens along with an adapted so I can fit it to my Nikon EM. Here it is followed by a quick test shot on my Digikal Nikon!! It's not the sharpest of lenses, but look at that lovely round bokeh!!!!
