OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

I was just thinking the same myself Mark. We all tend to drop stuff of in here and although I have put a few pics in the 'photos from film' thread they don't generate much interest or critique, which I need .
Whenever I post in the 'show us' thread they disappear of the page with very little comment (could be because they're carp mind. :D). I think we need to be more active in both areas if we don't use it we lose it.

Andy

Well I've just posted some pics in the film section, I will have more this week. The LF comment was very tongue in cheek. I also need to make an effort to crit images posted in the film section, have more discussion on the choice of film and the developer.
But I for one will be making the effort.

Mart

Why not close this thread and start taking photos with our gear instead of photos of our gear? Less talk, more action comrades!

True Kev, Very True - if everyone who'd posted a toy in this thread had shot a roll of film (or a box for the cut-sheet brigade) with the camera, and posted the best 10% of the shots I wouldn't need to be having this moan.

I just wish that I could get out for a days shooting, I really do, but I'm tied at best to a couple of hours, and after doing a photo-365 in 2009, I'm thoroughly sick and tired of every location within a hour's drive of home :bang: Couple that with my serious aversion to shooting people (at least with a camera :naughty:) and total lack of enthusiasm for product shots/close up work (too near to WORK for me to enjoy) I'm pretty much stuffed at the moment :shake:

I think the 'Show Us Your Film Shots' thread has run long enough. This is the Film Forum.. right? We don't need a mammoth thread specifying that it's film shots you're posting. I see no reason at all why film shots shouldn't be posted in their own thread, just as they would be elsewhere on the forum, and I'm sure they'd attract a lot more attention that way than they are doing currently.

People could comment as they wish in a thread confined to those images, rather than to have to look back and quote posters to make sure you're referring to the right images.

My take on the "Show Us..." thread is that people feel comfortable to post in there, secure in the fact that NOBODY WILL critique their shots - personally, I've always been disapointed when I posted a shot or 3 in there, and didn't even get a "what film was that on?" question. So - when there was a section for film shots opened up in the Crit. forum I was delighted. Sadly, it coincided with a change in personal circumstances that mean I can't get out shooting for any respectable duration - putting a serious crimp in my film usage (and probably wasting a load of chemicals into the bargain :'()

I understand that not everyone wants, requires or cares about critique on their shots - but I'd hate to lose a place where I could recieve some, if only I could get out and shoot again

(feel free to ignore me: I'm just having a moan and feeling sorry for myself... it'll pass :bonk:)

Personally I wouldn't post in the 'Show us your Film Shots' thread if I wanted C&C (which I need with film) because the photos would just get lost with the rest- I'd start a separate thread.

Another thought - I haven't been using film that much recently because of the light levels. I tend to photograph scenes that need enough speed to stop motion of one kind or another and ASA400 just wont cut it at the moment. When the light levels pick up more then the film body will be out again.

I don't think that we need to despair - just be a bit more realistic about seasonal conditions and accept that not everyone uses film for landscapes and still life! :D

I know what you mean about not being able to get out Mark - it'sa bummer for sure.

I don't know why people should be worried about comments or critique on their film shots. Critique doesn't kill ya anyway. :D If we assume (which I'm sure is the case) that people do like to receive comments on their film shots but not critique, then it seems that any comments are bound to be of the 'nice shot' type which causes so much discontent elsewhere on the forum?

Why don't people want comment? Are we saying that film is some sort of quaint outmoded lesser medium, and we're all just a bunch of anoraks using film for the buzz rather than being serious about it?

I think you've raised a valid point Mark. Now we have a film sharing section there isn't really a need for the show us your film shots thread except for nostalgia. I think personally, now would be a good time to draw it to a close and hopefully that will make people more active in the new film sharing forum.

F&C has been a whole lot quieter recently since Ujjwal went away, and Arthur got his own forum for camera trading on so calls in a little less often.

Nothing to do with trading BY, more about getting away from the them and us atmosphere that sometimes prevails... there is not even a sale section. And Ujjwal was more pushed than jumped - but that's all by the by, I also think there is a strong seasonal thing going on as mentioned above, not just the light but the weather too. I have kit here that the last thing I want to do with is get it wet, it's taken me quite some time to work up to the bits I actually wanted and whilst not treating it with kid gloves I am certainly not going to tempt fate. Anyway, I still post but tend not to initiate these days, safer that way.

Fair 'nuff Arthur, but I miss ya, mate... Used to love the wierd and wonderful kit you came up with, and the amazing FrankenKameras

I don't even have the weather excuse... EOS-3 and a bunch of L glass is at least as safe as the 7d. in the rain - and i've plenty of HP5+ that'll go to 1600 in perceptol. :bonk:

I used to do that if i'd something decent, or a specific problem on a shot, but always felt it was a bit iffy to do so in a "talk" area, hence being happier when the Crit and Sharing for film opened up.

Shoot HP5+ and push it a couple of stops. Where theres a will there's a solicitor way

I have new toy!!!!!

om2.jpg

OM-2 given to me by one of the guys at work, ran the rest of the film off which had been in there 10-15 years by his reckoning and it came out very green! but scanned to give some seriously retro looking images. I have a 28mm f2.5 somewhere that should fit it too :)

Lucky git - that's a lovely camera.

My 5dmkII arrived today :D Although the fedex delivery guy very nearly dropped it at the front door  (if there was a smiliey for a heart attack, it would be here!)

Talking about digital in here is tantamount to swearing in front of a Mother Superior; but congrats anyway!

Ahhhhh, don't worry about it. Most of the fillum denizens (myself included - before someone say's i'm picking on them ) have a dijical camera or two, if only for taking photographs of the film cameras that they buy and post on this thread

Oh, and again, congrats on the 5Dii, I might consider getting one of those full frame digitals when they get the AF up to the standard of the EOS-3 ;)

Fair point, I get the impression that most film users these days tend to be available light photographers too. And when the sun is out the light's so bright and the shadows are so dark!

I've got a few shots I'd like to share, I'll try to pop a couple up.

That's a fairly valid point. The quality of the AF on the 3 has seriously impressed me, and the sensor size is pretty cool too! :D

I think after owning the EOS-3 the 1D series is the only way to go digitally. I have run a few films through my 3 and been VERY impressed with the way it handles/ease of use, so much so my friends 5D mk1 doesn't really feel like as good a camera from a use POV. Its a hell of a piece of kit for the money considering second hand prices.

Nail, head. It's one of the main reasons that I down-/up-/side-graded from a 7D to a 1DMkIII.

(well, that and the fact that I still have visiting rights with the 7! :D )

I think that there's scope for canon to produce a EOS-3D - Full frame larger sensor version of the 5D with the AF from the 7D and a plastic body - just to stop upsetting the 1D owners

fwiw, I went for a 7D recently, which will see me through for now :)

Here's a lovely mistake. I was asked by my boss to get him a Voigtlander Vito because he loved the Vito B I bought last week. He did however want one with a light meter, I forgot and bought this one, its like new and I wanted to keep it from the moment I opened the package. Sooooo... I found a Vito CLR for the same price (£29) and he's having that instead.

Sweet camera Andy, and a very stylish rangefinder.

I have the older 'S' version of that lens and it is a cracking bit of kit

You got that for a good price. Much prefer that hood to the square one I've got for my 50mm.

i snapped it up immediately when i saw it on the bay for that price. the PS seem to go for £170/180 + normally.

it came this morning and it's in really good nick too, chuffed with it.

and RE the hood, how the bloody hell do I remove the cover? It's trying it's hardest to stay on the thing. seems impossible to get the thing off!

My first foray into the world of film:

Bought as untested, but batteries arrived this morning and everything seems to be functioning fine now, loaded up some film so will go shooting when I have time so probably the weekend. This is a very stupid question, but I can change lenses without ruining the film right as the shutter is closed?

That looks very nice -and yes - you can change lenses no need to worry.

That's beautiful. Haven't had a go with a 'rangefinder' myself before, simply because I don't quite know how to use one :/ I could google, but it's generally not in laymans terms. How does one focus using a rangefinder ?

Most rangefinders work the same - you get the normal viewfinder image, but superimposed over that is another version of the viewfinder image (or a portion of it) usually tinted slightly, often pink, so you can differentiate between the two images. You just turn the focusing ring on the lens until the two images coincide (align)exactly very accurate providing they're properly calibrated.

I see, so actually quite simple in theory. Will keep an eye out. I think digital is making me lazy and think less about my shots. I need to prepare more so think it might be time to go back to basics. Thanks!

Well it's true that you tend to think about your shots more with a roll of 24 or 36 exposure 35mm - even more so with medium format where you mostly get 10 or 12 shots off a roll, so it does make you more selective before pressing the shutter.

I've been given by a very kind soul on freecycle a Minolta 7000. With flash, a shedload of filters (some Cokin), a honking great bag and minolta 28mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4 and a sigma 70-300 monster.
I am a happy monster.
Oh yes.

ETA: Oh and some flashes. Unomat B24CT, Boots photoflash 18A, Boots photoflash auto2000, Pentax AF200S and a Pentax AF260Sa.
Pictures of it all when I can find time :)

I bought a JOBO tank capable of developing 5x4 for £40, not as exciting as a new camera but hopefully I will be able to get some decent results from my crown graphic...
