OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

Nah. Ugly was what the Kodak DCS series did to some great film cameras. But then again evolution has to start from somewhere!

Shush Mark. We both know that the EOS-3 is easily as good as both the F5 and the 1v! ;)

(mind you I'd love to have the functionality of the Exif buffer)

That'd be the thing that sold it to me - especially as the POTY competition 2011 is getting keener on what date things were shot for entry criteria. I'm not organised enough to take a notebook along and write everything down, so I can see more stuff this year ending up coming from the digital :(

As far as comparisons between the EOS3 and the F5, well - for me, as I've precisely Zero nikon glass, and a peli-case of canon stuff with little red-rings around the end, I'll take the EOS3 any day of the week

I returned to the local curiosity shop I mentioned earlier for an early Christmas present from my partner.

Kodak Retina 1a with the coated f/2.8 Retina Xenar and the Synchro-Compur shutter. Clean(-ish) - just a bit of usage grime in the knurling and details, light-tight bellows and a smooth winder action. Looking forward to putting some film through it over the holidays.

Pictures later, once I've given it a going over to get the exterior cleaned up a bit.

My God this is a beast of a camera. Weighs as much as the Isle of Wight and is built from weapons grade titanium-lead and granite. Needs the light seals changing but otherwise both camera and lens are in good nick, shame I can't actually lift it up to try it out.......

TBH I think I had pretty decent reasons for getting an F5.

1. I'm a technophile, so like the automation of the F5, and it handles like modern day Nikon DSLRs.
2. I'm starting to collect decent Nikon lenses, and most of them will be G lenses, and I'd like to use them as much as I can - which F5s can.
3. The F5 looks so pro.... :p

I'm not ashamed to use a MTL3 in public

Yep, nice looking F5!

On a rather more basic level, here's my new 35mm Nikon, an L35 AF complete with "collector's" set:

Cost a tenth of the price of the F5 above

Loaded it with some XP2 but haven't had the chance to play with it yet.

Absolutely brilliant camera! When they work... I have bought 2 of them, the first broke before even a single roll through it and the second broke after 4 films. Spent months looking for how to fix them but to no avail. So I took one apart and smashed the other one up to make content for a book: http://www.anti-all.com/deconstruct

Looks like your set is really well looked after though. Also, let me know if you want a set of wide-angle and tele converters for it.

I have just taken ownership of an Ensign Pocket Twenty from my Grandad. Speaking to my Mum, she said it used to belong to my Great-Nan. A bit of research reveals this particular model was built circa-1933. Shutter speeds seem to be fairly accurate, aperture is great and the bellows look fantastic too. I can't wait to be getting a roll of MF film through it as it's my first MF camera!!

Photos of the camera to follow tomorrow!

Welcome to the Ensign club :D

There's a few of us using 420s, 16-20s, etc.

I know! One pack of film cost more than what I paid for the camera. Even the cheapy plastic polaroid cameras are reaching silly prices!!

Just picked up a Pretty minty F5 off eBay for £150:

Just make sure it lasts longer than mine.
I was given a brand new one by the paper I was working for, got it out of the box, put on the 70-200, went away from my desk, came back and knocked it onto the floor. Only cost £800 to get it repaired. Was a long long long walk to tell the pic ed what I had done....

Just picked all of this up :D My First 35mm SLR's!

Im stoaked! Got it all for free aswell off Freecycle!

My son gave me his battered Ixus 870 IS with lens jammed open and after using brute force I got it working erm the flaps covering the lens when closed fell out tho'...anyway no memory card, so ordered a Kingston 4gig SD Card (SDHC) - Class 4 for £5.50 (cheapest I could find). Anyone know what "class 4" is?

The 'class' is what determines the transfer speed of the card, with higher values meaning faster read write times. For compact cameras it doesn't really matter as the files are generally not too large and as so don't take too long to open/ write.

Class 4 basically means a file transfer speed of 4 mb/s

Thank you.

Re: SimonUK

Haha! A Beirette Electronic! Don't see those every day, wish I could get mine to work. They have the hilariously blocky 2-blade aperture that creates square bokeh. Very decent selection from Freecycle, congrats.

A new folder joins the collection..

Kodak Retina 1a (type 015) by SaltGeorge, on Flickr

Still putting the first roll through it at the moment, but it's got a really nice action. A bit sticky on the slower speeds, but the film advance is smooth and the frame counter works.

Thanks Mark, it's a sweet little camera and a perfect pocket size. The processing is a LR preset I've been working on for a while now. To go with the camera I picked up an accessory rangefinder:

The Hawk, adjustable range finder by SaltGeorge, on Flickr

But this is causing me problems. A quick test suggests the rangefinder is out, and I don't have the instructions to adjust it. I've found instructions for other rangefinders online where you unlock the distance wheel and adjust the setting to suit. However the additional two screws on this one are puzzling me.. anyone got any ideas?

I can't find any info on this at all, but is it possible that one screw adjusts the calibration towards infinity and the other towards the camera? If it's out anyway I can't see yoiu doing any harm by making some careful adjustments and noting the change.

Alistair
I have the instructions for this, i will flatten it as its folded up small in the box and scan it and post it up later today:)

Hope its readable Alistair, as its only a small document and has probably been folded up in the box for quite a few years.

Wow, Groucho.. thanks, that's perfect! I wondered if there was an element of vertical alignment possible.

Got a nice little 28ti in the post yesterday (nods to Joxby; yup, a black one :D ) and a Zenit 19 to rob for parts for a new 1/2 frame SLR...
