OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

LOL In the UK I find a manual camera is a PITA..sun/cloud sun/cloud, children running from shade to sun light, and so on.....gimme the semi autos any day.

Noooo! Light meters are incredibly stupid. They wouldn't know a skin tone from a sunset. By the time you've twiddled with the override you may as well have taken a proper reading in the first place.

me too. been there done that, if it's just cloudy it's a dream. but with the strong winds it changes every two seconds :bonk:

Good question. We're going back a few years but the Fujica owner upgraded to a Canon A-1 which he never liked because it was too complicated and he drifted away from photography. The Ricoh guy I lost touch with but he had a fantastic eye for a shot. The point is neither were effected detrimentally by the budget cameras they used.

Being objective with my own stuff down the years the images taken on a Chinon CX I started out with were no worse than the OM1 I moved onto. The photos that came from a Nikon 301 were rather better than the Nikon F because I was shooting more film with it. So all in all it's difficult not to conclude that the quality of the images has damn all to do with the camera.

What I have realised - with film I will work more with the subject and shoot when I truly see a good shot, digi - snap, snap, snap, talking, seeing that there are no good shots, but I'm still snaping like crazy. As I mentioned earlier here - One british tog legend had a Vogue photoshoot in florida and all he shot was 15 frames, he didn't even get the camera model right.
that's where I'm aiming at. Film teaches you stuff. haven't shot film for years, but now I'll shoot film exclusively, well and digi compact for crap pics.

Spot meter ? It is bad sometimes, but as bad ! anyway - knowing the shutters for every h of a day is a really good thing , another thing I'm relearning as digi takes that away.

Now you're onto something (if we're both waaay OT). [rant] Spot meters are great but not quick or magic pixies. There's a place for automatic exposure but its easily fooled and breeds complacency![/rant]

Ah gotcha..set your weston for incident light reading or meter off a grey card in sun light, then you have the camera set for a shot and WTF a large cloud cover the sun...gotta reset the camera? Oh feek it I'll use the sunny 16 rule.

couldn't understand my writing when I re-read it :cuckoo: .
anyway what I wanted to say - it's not that bad.

low budget spot meter - zoom in the persons cheek read the times zoom out, hope the cloud hasn't changed - click !

Most of the information I have on this camera comes from this site. I'm a little skeptical about just how positive the reviewer seems to be but it's certainly a wonderful little piece of engineering. It has a shutter-priority auto-exposure system (although I'll be damned if I can clearly see the indicator inside the viewfinder) which adjusts the aperture on auto mode for correct exposure if you're shooting in semi-reasonable conditions.

I'm a little worried it will expose slightly incorrectly because it's a slightly different battery I'm using from the original, but only the development tank will tell. I couldn't tell you much about Hi-matic cameras in general, but I do know the 7sII was one of the last, and one of the best, that Minolta did. It has a lovely, sharp 40mm 1.7 Rokkor lens on it. Great for candids - compact and very quiet. I'll hold out on a recommendation until I've got my shots back, though!

eager to see the results ! :)
I don't know about the quietness, I don't believe it actually matters, it's not like everything's quiet in the streets and when you push the shutter everybody looks at you.

I had it, and its a lovely camera with a fantastic lens - almost leica quality.

As for the battery; 1-1.5 stop overexposure adjusts the exposure problem of 1.35v vs 1.5 volt batteries for any of the old cameras using mercury batteries

Thanks for the extra info! In terms of adjusting for overexposure how did you manage it? Manual exposure correction on the camera or push processing in the tank?

Minolta Hi-Matic AF-2 MD - I think this one was the last indian of hi-matics :)
one ended today but I told myself I need to sell before I can buy

I'm adding exclusions  - minolta xe1 , 700si and a scanner ! :cuckoo:

Simply set the ISO in the camera 1.5 stop lower (i.e for 100ASA film set the iso 50 or 25):D

Great stuff. That actually would never have occurred to me (spoilt by digital, huh?). Thanks again.

No problem John.
BTW, 7sII is the best of the lot. It is rumoured that when Leica checked the quality of the 7SII lens, they were so happy that they let used the Minolta lens design for Leica CL. It commands a good premuim, FYI when you are going to sell it ( as you certainly will :D)

OMG !!!!!

I just put some weird last bid. was winning till 0 sec and there was a last automated bid just 4p less than my max ! :D .. I think he's screaming his/hers gut out at the moment !

Well? What is it????

I just bought one... I *had* managed to forget this particular model (Minolta Prod 20's) while I concentrated on the first three Konishiroku babies - but then you dragged it kicking and screaming to the front of my list...

Like I said, it had to be done - once I had been reminded about this sexy looking wee beastie I had to re-arrange the wanted list. Hit the doormat today and no, I am not saying how much it cost!

thanks ! :)
maybe someday when I'll be ready to get one myself. don't want no salt on my wounds at the moment. mind you - it went for very nice price.

but the same seller had 700si + 50mm f1.7 af listed and that was my primary target because of the lens , well and the camera as well. because the 7000i is somewhat ugly :(

My latest, Zenit E + Helios 44-2:

Had to fix the spring that lifts the mirror as it had slipped off the arm that raises it during exposure, and I've subsequently stuck down the trim that was lifting. Not bad for £3, just hope the selenium light meter isn't too far gone, I'll try running a roll through it sometime soon.

This arrived a couple of days ago, courtesy of evilBay for a reasonable price. I finally decided I had to have one.

[that's the FD 50mm f/1.4, not the A-1 :)]

Got the VC-7 as well...

The only nice cameras in that range are the single figure Dynaxes - 3, 4, 5, 7, 9!

I like how 700si looks and it must be a bit better than my current 7000i so - good enough ! :)
7,9 are of course the next gen and 9 is the boss. but the si will suit me well :)

... but it's got no knobs on it - can't be a *proper* cameras wivout knobs, everyone knows that

Friend told me "I've found a couple of old film cameras at a car boot today and thought of you"...

I have some new presents arriving later today but no idea what yet :D :D

Excuse the quick pics, I'll try and get some later :)

All for the price of £25 :)
