OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

I very nearly bought that before I went on holiday, if it was still there when i got back I would definitely had it....:bang: Oh well maybe next time.

Hehe. Actually I've had a few problems with the first test roll I put through it, lots of pics underexposed. Hopefully just something I've done wrong - I can't see anything wrong with the way it behaves, so am testing again before concluding anything.

It's a bit quirky to be honest, not sure I'll keep it....focus ring goes the 'wrong' way, and the minimum focus distance of 0.8m is a bit of a handicap. On both counts the newer AI-P 45mm lens is a better bet, but they cost at least twice as much! However they are actually even smaller with much narrower focus and aperture rings, and some people do report that they are actually too small to handle.

Hmmm... I'd never thought about lenses focusing the opposite way. Either I've never noticed it or all of my cameras and lenses coincidentally focus in the same direction.

As for minimum focus distance, I would think .8 metres is pretty good for a medium format rangefinder. Many of the MF RF cameras I've been looking at recently seem to only focus as close a one metre.

This is for a Nikon 35mm SLR. The newer 45mm lens focuses down to .45m, as do most of the 50mm lenses.

The focus going the opposite way is only by comparison to other Nikon lenses. They had to design it this way so the focus ring can couple with the aperture ring for the clever flash exposure trick that it does. I know Canon and Leica usually go the opposite way of Nikons, not sure about others.

I've done another test roll with the lens, half with my FE2 and half with my F4, and this time they all came out exposed right. So I guess I must have messed up somehow the first time (maybe I didn't mount the lens properly...that's the only explanation I can think of). My initial thoughts with it are that it's rather soft at f2.8 and ideally needs stopping down to f8 for good IQ....which doesn't compare very favourably with the Nikkor 50mm lenses. More testing required I think before deciding if it's a keeper!

Oops, I totally got my posts crossed!

For some reason I was thinking that you were talking about the Mamiya 7.

My apologies there.

I hope everything with the lens works out to your satisfaction!

Heehee, no worries. Wish I was...would love one of those!

Not a new toy that puts an image onto film but one that takes the image off again. Here's mine and Rob Hooley's latest acquisition which we've just tested and all is working nice and smoothly - a Howtek D4000 drum scanner!

Only one word can describe this thing... Beast!

So you guys offering a discounted scanning service for the rest of us? :) (in the appropriate section off course :P)

That drum scanner is certainly a beast but a beast I've love to have a go at!

Mmm I could do with an "Oops" moment and pick one up too...been drawn towards a 124G for a while now but yet to take the plunge.

Not a new purchase but a new toy in the sense that I can now play with it having, at long last, found a couple of Quarter Plate DD slides that fit a treat and work just fine...tried em yesterday, negs drying atm

Camera appears to be in reasonable working order too....shutter speeds are pretty accurate which is incredible for its age.

Oh wow, snap! I just got one of these too, albeit a Ruby Special. Planning to convert it to Polaroid. I'm also getting the mirror recoated, I can recommend a place if you need it doing too.

Yes... not sure if beast is enough.....mega-beast maybe? :)

What they're not saying it's that's just a seven inch monitor on top of that thing.

Dimensions wise it's 52cm wide, 90cm long, 30cm high and weighs 70kg...

It resolves 4000DPI at a DMAX of 4.0, it's a bit of a beast...

My girlfriends boss gave me a Praktica ML Revue that he got from a car boot. The meter is working even with a battery that says it was made in West Germany :)

He is also selling me a Nikon F75 with 28-100 kit lens on behalf of his friend for £30 which I think is quite a good price. I plan on using my 35mm digital DX lens on it just for the giggles :)

When we are fully up and running, we plan to contact the admins regarding advertising our services on here. Until then please don't PM us about getting scans done as it contravenes the rules. If all goes to plan we will let you all know later on.

I look forward to that Rob and I wish you the best of luck getting admin to allow you to offer the service.

I asked the TP gods a few times about offering scanning services on the forum and didn't even get a response :(

Good approach Rob... At the end of the day it's down to Marcel/Matty/DF on these matters how they want to take it forward...

Nick - how did you contact them - I don't remember seeing anything come through the staff-room noticeboard - was it via the "Contact Us" ??

It was about 4 years ago and I tried 2 or 3 times, I'm pretty sure I used the 'Contact Us' method but got no response to any of my queries so just assumed that as I wasn't a 'proper' trader TP weren't interested.

Best of luck - I'd certainly be interested in a good value drum scan service, most of the commercial ones out there are incredibly expensive.

I guess that'd be before I had the keys for the staff dungeon then... explains why I didn't see it - I think it'd probably have been archived away by now (as it didn't show up in any searches...)

I was all ready to announce my latest toy, a Pentax-A 50mm f/1.7 of the evil bay. But the darn aperture ring is increadibly stiff and it's going to have to go back. I'm so cross!

I may resurrect the idea as I seem to have a bit more time on my hands at the moment.

The A50 1.7 is a really nice lens - sharp from wide open. The stiff aperture ring is most likely due to a broken part in the ring. If the lens was a bargain, then it's an easy fix - a bit of epoxy and you're good to go. There's a good pictorial of the repair here:

Although bulky, they're quite nice to use.

I was out with mine again yesterday and got a couple of decent shots.

All is in good working order, even the shutter speeds are pretty accurate.

The mirror, although slightly pitted is still more than clear enough to be able to view/compose accuratley so no recoating necessary, nonetheless I may have other work that needs doing so by all means please pass me the details of your recommendation.

Brian, I'm just back from the Post Office having sent off the return when I read this! Actually, I'm sufficiently cack-handed that I think the return was probably the sensible move. Also, I wasn't sure the diagnosis was exactly the same; this would move anywhere including A, but just unreasonably stiff!

The link is great, thanks. It's a bit worrying that this might be a common problem with this lens, as I am/was still thinking of buying one. Maybe I should just get another M version, and just reckon to get new lenses if I ever get my fabled MZ-S or a digital Pentax!

(The point of this purchase was so that when I walk out with two bodies I don't have to choose from a 28mm or 135mm for the second body!)

It's a common enough problem with the Pentax A models, but mainly because so many of them were sold! I wouldn't worry about it too much - they are well worth the money, and as it's an easy fix, then I personally don't see it as a particular issue! If you are thinking of getting a Pentax DSLR, then the a lenses are definitely an easier prospect for day-to-day use.

I got my hands on the F75 last night and I am in love :) can't wait to use it now!

My new toy:

Not very exciting but it works! Thinking of a snakeskin cover of some kind for this one.

There well Nice I have the F65 with a 28-80 lens and its realy clean and sharp the AF is lightning enjoy.

is the F75 a metal body?

I've recently received an F75 too. Film arrived today so hopefully get out sometime over the weekend.

It's a plastic body but it is just the right size for me and I have big yeti hands!

I rattled off a roll today after work. Everything is so familiar as I also use a d3100 from time to time. Love the shutter sound too! Just need to download a manual now so I can figure out how to turn off the focus beep!

I was surprised at how light it is compared to the D200, not as solid as the Contax I used to use. But, it should give good results.
I'll be trying out the Zorki 4 as well. Feels like it was made from left over bits from a tank.

And then there is the XA2 and the μ...
