Hi Guys,

We're of to South Wales (Borth tonight and St David's Sat & Sun) and looking at the weather forecast theres a chance of some reasonable sunsets.

Now I'm having trouble with sunsets, can anyone give me some advice on settings etc so I can improve and get some half decent ones?

Cheers all

Andy

Don't include the sun itself in the viewfinder when you take a reading. Point the camera to one side, this will give an average reading for the rest of the scene. Recompose, take pic.

Easy!

Actually, I think sunsets are among the easiest subjects to meter for. There's no actual right or wrong exposure. If you bracket that will give you insurance either side, and if you get exposure roughly correct you might get 3 usable images.

I would have thought your software could correct most dodgy exposures anyway....

Sunset at Borth tonight - 20.27 hrs
Low tide at Borth tonight - about 19.15 hrs.

Have you ever found the submerged forest there? Depending on storms, currents, etc the sand can be removed from certain sections of the beach, exposing "petrified" tree stumps, dating back 6000 years. You could try Ynyslas Turn for this, about 2 miles north of Borth. There's a car park across the golf course. Great subject matter at sunset!

The whole area around St David's is fantastic for the photographer.

Have fun!:)

Thanks Jerry, concise instructions with extras. We are actually stopping at Borth youth hostel tonight which I believe is right next to the beach so I'll be giving the camera some hammer this evening. The 'petrified' trees sound interesting also, I'll see if I can fit that in as well. Unfortunately we wont be able to get there until late afternoon and we'll be leaving fairly early tomorrow so time is a constraint.

Cheers

The forecast for today is 'getting better' and for tomorrow, with a nice sunny early start, could moving in from the West towards later afternoon - but no rain is forecast... yet!

You will love St Davids - a gorgeous cathedral, I have played in there several times and it is wonderful. Also, try to seek out a small place not far from St Davids called Solva. It's only very small, but is a natural harbour and should present some wonderful photographic opportunities, especiall at low tide.

Have fun, if you're on the M4 you'll be traveling only 3/4 mile from my house. Be sure to shout hello just before you enter the tunnels on the East of Newport... :):)

Enjoy!

If you cross the road in front of the YH onto the beach, you can look left and right to see if the petrified forest is exposed. Most likely it will be to your right, towards Ynyslas, but it tends to be more visible in late winter. You could walk that way anyway. Sunset will be straight ahead.
