I have decided to take a well deserved but unexpected time out from work for a few days and have myself a long bank holiday weekend. So, as the kids are still in school, and the lady wife herself still has to attend her pre-school, I have decided to trek off on a 2 1/2 hour journey to Skomer Island, South Pembrokeshire.

I have my sunshade tent, chair, rucksack, E-3, 70-300mm plus 1.4x and at 06:30 tomorrow morning I'll be off.

There's a chance of Short Eared Owls, Gannets by the millions, Shearwaters, Puffins, Guillemots and a plethora of other species. Can't wait.

why not take a wide angle just in case there is any great sceneary?

and enjoy!

I will also be taking the 11-22mm, and 14-54mm too!! As well as my Cokin ND2, ND4 and circular polariser (not that I am expecting any sunshine)...:)

I want to try my hand at some panoramas.

Now I know why the questions about Panos. Have nice rest, John and happy snapping.

Regards - Paul

Alt site, John. You know, I actually thought I'd found a site with no Musicman. Pah, was I wrong!! The man gets everywhere!! :D Nice to see you matey :wave::wave:

Don't forget, an early night tonight. It's a long, easy day tomorrow with lots of panos to take. Take extra CF cards with you, panos eat 'em up.

Regards - Paul

Very nice. Skomer is one place high on my list. Beware that they only let a limited amount of people on the island each day, so get there early or phone up first. :)

Hey MK, great to hear from you sir.

I am off at 06:30 ensuring I have time for a nice brekkie in the Camarthen services, then arrive well in time for the 1st crossing at 10:00.

Really looking forward to this one.

Thanks Ven, only wish I could capture the same quality bird shots you are able to. Also, I wish I had ordered the Bigma now... :) soon, but not here yet.

Ooh cool. Have a great time!
I've read that on busy days people can start queueing for the crossings at 8:30am or earlier!

You gonna give us a report back of your day afterwards and a few piccies? :)

From what i have seen the Bigma gets slightly soft over 400mm, and is heavy so may be difficult to get the shutter speeds you need at full zoom (1000mm on the E-3)

Have you considered the 135-400mm.

A lot lighter and easier to carry arround and shoot at full length (800mm on the E-3).

The 135-400 is stopping being produced and is being replaced with the 120-400 but not in 4/3rds mount for the forseeable future, so the 135-400's are being snapped up like you would not believe.

I've got one on the way so will post up some example shots when it arrives. :)

How did the trip go?
What equipment would you advise for a trip there. I'm planning on a visit this summer.

Gareth.

Never been to Skomer but went to Skokholm a few times to photograph the puffins and the Guillimots when I did a wildlife illustration course in Carmarthen. Great place.

wasn't it the place where they did the tests on how mixamitosis was spread and found it was through fleas off rats?...
