anyone been and can give me suggestions of places to look out for other than the obvious tourist traps?

I was in Rome this time last year and loved every minute of it. :)

I think the Pantheon was my favourite building in Rome. A wreck on the outside, and stunning ceiling on the inside (take your wide angle lens ;)). Best of all it is free. ;) Go on a sunny day and you get the light beaming through the hole in the ceiling.

Very good views on the river looking towards the Vatican. A clichéd image, but nice when you get your own version of it. ;) Good view in the day and at night too.

You can get some nice views walking around the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II) towards the Colosseum. You can pay to go on top of the building itself as you get quite high up, but I didn't as I got some nice pics just walking around the building.

There is a road beside Forum leading towards the Colosseum there is a slip road next to the forum where you can get some night shots of the Colosseum and traffic.

All free views. :D Well apart from paying and staying there. :lol:

tivoli gardens...yes they are there as well...and a good meal can be had and a few arias from the waiters
 
Take a tour bus as well as that takes in some sights all over (apologies for stating the obvious) but it showed us some other places around Rome apart from the obvious places as stated.. We went 18mths ago scortching hot - lovely place - althou did notice that inside the colleseum wasnt as large as its made out to be (in gladiator it looked massive)
 
Its probably a tourist trap but amongst the usual, I quite liked Castel Sant'Angelo, just down the road from St Peter's Square. Actually had two trips there, went back again near the end of the trip as I had seen everything else.
Aside from that, was about 5 years ago but the restaurant, La Veranda inside Hotel Columbus is a recommended booking, being a foodie...
I didn't use the tour bus and found some nice small places off the beaten track, but that's not to say you should or shouldn't use the tour bus. I was quite conscious of thieves and pickpockets there from warnings that I had, though I cant say they were obvious or not, I didn't have any issues but I didn't advertise my tourist status...
 
Hadrian's villa just outside Rome is amazing. So amazing I've been there twice!
 
I was utterly impressed by the Baths of Caracalla.

Mind-bogglying huge and very few people around when I visited in early September 2001 ( we got back to the UK a few hours before the Twin Towers came down).

We used the bus to have a look around & like you we found some interesting places around, but when we went it was too hot too walk - nice & breezy on an open topper thou..

:eek: crikey I must have stuck out like a sore thumb (typical tourist)... As I took Sigma's "Bigma" when we went, had a few interests from the some of the stall holders about it, but never felt the need to keep it hidden away thou.. Felt safe as houses, even on their public transport...

Cant remember the exact name, but if you get a chance go and see the fountain, no doubt some one will help out on that (as I've miss layed the book on Rome)

Lovely place you'll enjoy it..

Trevi fountain?

One of the best cities in the world. I haven't one specific favourite but found the collosseum and the vatican fascinating. Paid for a guide for half a day which was worth it and although I don't remember exactly how much it cost it was reasonable.
I felt safe there although pick pockets are a problem, avoid people approaching you with a piece of board which they use to disguise their sly hands! Oh and the "head of a fashion house" tried to sell me a pile of designer kit but he was so obvious it was comical:lol:.

I think the fountain is probably the Trevi fountain
 
Get to the Trevi Fountain around midday as it should all be illuminated by the Sun. It is good at night all lit up too. It is extremely busy though, so keep pockets and bags zipped. ;)

If you go to the tomb of the unamed soldier do NOT sit on the steps as you will get told off & told to stand up - althou there are signs in 20 billion languages telling you that.. Well about 10 ( I did over exagerate there a wee bit)
